When

The two year program has four phases: 

  1. Summer one in USM's summer session beginning in mid-May with a half day orientation, two online courses in May - June, and two online courses in August;
  2. Teaching internship year one beginning with the start of school and ending in April with the classroom placement and companion online courses;
  3. Summer two in USM's summer session with three online courses May - July;
  4. Teaching internship year one beginning with the start of school and ending in early May with the classroom placement and companion online courses

As a general rule, the school calendar is observed.

Registration and Schedule Details

Summer One

Registration:

SED 615 Classroom and Behavior Management for Learners with Special Needs (3 cr online)
SED 687 Technology for Learning and Communication (3 cr online)
SED 540 Exceptional Students in the Classroom (3 cr online)
Total: 9 credits

Schedule:

half day site based orientation

SED 615 (mid May thru June online weekly activities with one or two site based meetings to support the online activities)
SED 687 (mid May thru June online weekly activities with one or two site based meetings to support the online activities)

July: no program activities

August 1 - 31

SED 540 Exceptional Students in the Classroom (August 1 - 31 online weekly activities)
HRD 660 Lifespan Develop (August 1 - 31 online weekly activities)
NOTE: HRD 660 is registered for in the fall but begins August 1)

Fall One Semester:

Registration:

HRD 660 Lifespan Development (3 cr online)
EDU 541 Seminar I (2 cr online)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms: Mathematics (2 cr online)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms: Science (2 cr online)
Total: 9 cr

Schedule:

One day of site based orientation activities immediately prior to school startup.

Classroom placement starts with the beginning of school.

HRD 660 Lifespan Development (August online activities)
EDU 541 Seminar I (online activities and site based meetings one afternoon every three weeks)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms:
Mathematics and Science (online weekly activities with three or four site based meetings to support the online activities)

Classroom placement for part-time ed techs or interns not in ed tech position:
2 days per week in school placement emphasizing general education
2 days lead teaching in December in general education

Spring One Semester:

Registration:

EDU 541 Seminar I (1 cr online)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms: Social Studies (2 cr online)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms: Special Education (3 cr online)
EDU 644 Internship in Elementary Education (3 cr) Total: 9 cr

Schedule:

EDU 541 Seminar I (online activities and site based meetings one afternoon every three weeks)
EDU 644 Internship in Elementary Education (classroom placement/online activities)
EDU 556 Teaching Content Methods for Inclusive Classrooms:
Social Studies and Special Education (online weekly activities with three or four site based meetings to support the online activities)

Last day of internship is the Friday before April break.

Classroom placement for part-time ed techs or interns not in ed tech position:
3 days per week in school placement emphasizing general education
Two weeks of full time lead teaching in general education
Eight to ten days of observing in other grade levels and general education and support programs.

Summer Two May-July

Registration and Schedule

SED 653 Assessment in Special Education (3 cr online)
(mid May - June weekly online activities with two site based meetings to support the online activities)
SED 682 Special Education Law: Conflict and Resolution (3 cr online)
(mid May - June weekly online activities)

EDU 600 Research Methods and Techniques (3 cr online)
(6 weeks July/mid August with weekly online activities with two site based meetings to support the online activities)

Total: 9 credits

mid-August to start of school- only activity is a one day internship orientation immedidately prior to beginning of district staff days. Usually one day the week before the students begin school.

Fall Two Semester

Registration:

EDU 542 Seminar II (1 cr online)
SED 699 Directed Study (2 cr online)
EDU 565 Reading Development (3 cr online)
SED 688 Internship in Special Education(3 cr online)
Total: 9 cr

Schedule:

Classroom placement starts with the beginning of school.

SED 699 Directed Study (in conjunction with seminar online and meetings)
SED 688 Internship in Special Education (classroom placement/online activities)
EDU 565 Reading Development (online activities with two site based meetings to support the online activities)

Classroom placement for part-time ed techs or interns not in ed tech position:
2 days per week in school placement emphasizing special education

Spring Two Semester:

SED 699 Directed Study (1 cr online)
EDU 566 Writing Process (3 cr online)
SED 688 Internship in Special Education(3 cr online)
Total: 9 cr

EDU 542 Seminar II (online activities and site based meetings one afternoon every three weeks)
SED 699 Directed Study (in conjunction with seminar online and meetings)
SED 688 Internship in Special Education(classroom placement and online activities)
EDU 566 Writing Process (online activities with two site based meetings to support the online activities)

Last day of internship is the Friday before April break.
Culminating portfolio presentation late April early May.
Graduation mid-May.

Classrooom placement for part-time ed techs or interns not in ed tech position:
3 days per week in school placement emphasizing special education
Two consecutive weeks of full time placement in special education.
Eight to ten days observing in other types of special education and support programs.
