What
The graduate level Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP) offers a unified
K-8 special education/K-8 general education certification concentration. The

hour
concentration spans two academic years (four semesters) and two summers from
May
to May. Year One of the program is the general education emphasis
and Year Two is the special education emphasis. Successful completion of the
program, meeting the K-8 content area certification requirements, and passing
Maine's teacher certification test, Praxis I, results in a Master's in Special
Education degree and recommendations to the state for a K-8 general education
certificated and a K-8 special education certificate. The Extended Teacher
Education Program is nationally accredited and state approved.
The concentration is designed
so that persons with Bachelor's degrees employed in schools as
educational technicians can remain in their positions
and complete the concentration. For persons employed as educational
technicians, the employing district and the university must work
out a plan for completion of the program requirements combined
with the ed tech responsibilities. Although the program is designed
for educational technicians working toward teacher certification,
employment in a school is not a prerequisite for admissions. Persons
not employed in schools may apply. For persons not employed
as educational technicians, or employed as part-time ed techs,
the internship includes a classroom placement for approximately
75 days each year with experience in general education and special
education programs.
The admissions target each year is 21 interns in the region. Accepted
candidates form three supervision groups, each with an internship supervisor.
A supervision group is seven candidates in schools in the same general
geographical area. The three supervision groups join together proceeding through the
two year program as a cohort, completing the same program requirements
and taking courses together.
