What
The Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP) offers a unified
K-8 special education/K-8 general education certification concentration.
The 54 credit hour concentration spans two academic years (four
semesters) and two summers from May
to May. Year One of the program is the general education emphasis
and Year Two is the special education emphasis. Successfully completing the concentration
courses and internship, meeting the K-8 content area certification requirements
and passing Maine's certification tests, Praxis I and Praxis II, result in recommendations
for Maine's K-8 general education initial teaching certificate, Maine's K-8 special
education initial teaching certificate, and a Master's of Science in Special
Education degree. Persons interested in teaching middle school should pay close
attention to the new middle school teacher content area highly qualified teacher
requirements effective August, 2005. The Extended Teacher Education Program is
nationally accredited and state approved.
The concentration is designed so that persons employed in schools
as educational technicians with Bachelor’s degrees can remain
in their positions and complete the concentration. For persons
employed as educational technicians, the employing district and
the university must work out a plan for completion of the program
requirements combined with the ed tech responsibilities. Although
the program is designed for educational technicians working toward
teacher certification, employment in a school is not a prerequisite
for admissions. Persons not employed in schools may apply. For
persons not employed as educational technicians, or employed as
part-time ed techs, the internship includes a classroom placement
for approximately 75 days each year with experience in general
education and special education programs. The admissions target
each year is 21 interns.
