Writing for the Portland Newspapers as a drama critic and performing as co-host of Maine's only televised reviewing program, Power is co-producer of "Power & Steele on Theatre," a broadcast which has evaluated professional, community and educational theater in Maine for over ten years. As a member of the prestigious Dramatist Guild, Professor Power continues his active theater career both in and out of the classroom. & Teaching Interests...
Professor Power teaches Acting, Directing and Public Speaking as well as co-directing the Theatre Department's yearly original student written play. Part of the Department's on-going program encouraging young playwrights, the original play series has launched a number of talented writers into national recognition and major graduate programs. Professor Power's special interest in the Stanislavski method of acting includes many years of teaching collaboration with the late Grace DeCarlton Ross, dancer and former Moscow Art Theatre company member. In addition to his own original plays, Power has collaborated with Kurt Vonnegut Jr. in a re-write of his well known play, "Happy Birthday Wanda June" as well as directing a world premiere television production of Vonnegut's "Make Up Your Mind" with Tony Shalhoub. |
| As
a Playwright...
In 1989, Irish ancestry and a love of the sea encouraged Power to author the nationally performed musical-drama, Grannia based on the life of the 16th century Irish pirate, Grace O'Malley. Winner of the 1990 Moss Hart Award, Grannia is one of many scripts written by Power including numerous children's plays performed during his seven year volunteer service as managing and artistic director of the Children's Theater of Maine. He and Steven Romanoff were commissioned by the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities to write The Burning of Falmouth, Portland's Bi-centennial play which was performed over 150 times during 1976! |
