DOCUMENT FORMAT

The title page should normally follow the example under "Title Page Example" of this document and should contain all the information indicated.

Margins

Margins should be approximately one inch on all sides of the page unless the paper is presented in a binder or a cover, in which case the left margin should be wider.

Pagination

Pages of the paper should be numbered beginning with the first page of the text and continuing consecutively through the bibliography and appendices. Any pages preliminary to the text, excluding the title page, are sometimes paginated using small Roman numerals. Page numbers must be in a consistent location at least 5/8 of an inch from the top or bottom of the page and at least one inch from the right-hand edge.

Because the pages of the report may become separated, the writer's name should appear on each page of the final draft along with the page number. The name may be abbreviated to show only the writer's first initial and last name.

Any supplementary material submitted with the paper, such as technical reports or manufacturer's pamphlets, should be attached as an appendix at the end of the paper.

Line Spacing

Different instructors may expect different line spacing formats so the writer should ask before preparing reports. If a double line spacing format is used, quotations which exceed three lines, footnotes, bibliographies, table of contents, and captions for figures and tables are usually single spaced. The line spacing method used must be consistent throughout the paper.

Proofreading and Corrections

It is expected that the student will have proofread the paper before submission to the faculty member. All corrections must be neat and should not detract from the overall neatness of the paper.

Paper Quality

Unless otherwise specified, standard unlined 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper of at least 20 pound weight should be used. Special applications such as photographs, design portfolios, and high quality inkjet printing may require specialty papers.
