Biochemistry Laboratory Grading Policy

Reports

Submit a lab report by the date specified on the Schedule (for information on late work, see Fine Print). While you collect data as part of a lab team, your report should be entirely your own work. I will evaluate the report in the light of the Report Assignment (at the end of the lab handout) and the Report Guidelines. If the report is complete and meets all guidelines, I accept it, and you will receive a grade of A (95 points). If the report is not complete, it is considered late until I receive all parts.

If there are any deficiencies in the report, I return it for correction of deficiencies, and the you should a corrected report by next lab meeting after you receive the evaluated report. This process continues until the report is acceptable. The final grade on the report rests on how many submissions you make before I accept it:

  • One resubmission: A- (90)
  • Two resubmissions: B (85)
  • Three resubmissions: C+ (78)
  • More than three resubmissions, finally ending in acceptance: C- (70)
  • Report never accepted, but project completed: D- (60)
In effect, you get 60 points for doing the lab work, and up to 35 more for the report.
  • Report never submitted, but labs attended: F (40)
  • Absent from lab, no report: F (0)
  • Never signed up for lab: no grade (gotta cover all eventualities!)

Pre-Lab Exercises

I determine grades for Pre-Lab Exercises in the same manner as for Reports, above, except that late Exercises receive no credit.

Pre-Lab Exercises are essential preparation for the upcoming lab. If you come to lab without them, you come unprepared, and you will be less efficient, less effective, and more dependent on your lab partner in lab. In short, if you are unprepared, you cannot pull your own weight in lab.

Each individual submits completed excercises at the beginning of the first lab period on a project. If the exercises are complete and correct, I accept them. If there are deficiencies, I return them during the lab period or at the next 461/561 class, and you should correct them by the next lab period.

Pre-Lab Exercises, completed before the lab meeting, are required. No credit for late Pre-Lab Exercises.

Lab Notebooks

Hand in lab notebook COPY sheets (not the original page on which you write directly) for each project when you submit a report. I will check your sheets against the Guidelines, and mark the sheets S (satisfactory), S- (some deficiencies), or U (unsatisfactory). Early notebook evaluations are for feedback and do not affect your final grade. If the last three notebook submissions are S, you receive full credit for the lab notebook.
