USM School of Music brings back its alumni for
“A Musical Theatre Celebration!” May 3
“I think we’re due for a party, don’t you?” says a character in “The Wild
Party” -- a perfect introduction to USM’s “A Musical Theatre Celebration!”
In partnership with Evenings at Abromson, the University of Southern Maine
School of Music will present this special evening of favorite show tunes. The
cast includes musical theater majors, past and present – many of whom are
“coming home” just for this event. The well-known director and pianist for the
evening is USM musical theater faculty member, Edward Reichert.
The family-friendly entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2009,
in Hannaford Hall, Abromson Community Education Center, USM Portland campus.
Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for OLLI members. Call
780-5900.
This concert is sponsored by Down East
- Books * Magazine * Online.
The program will feature highlights from Broadway favorites such as “South
Pacific,” “Into the Woods,” “Wicked,” and “Avenue Q” ... as well as selections
from previous USM productions of “Bat Boy,” “Titanic,” “Urinetown,” “Songs For A
New World,” “Children of Eden” and others. Plus, there’ll be a few surprises …
like an audience-participation "Broadway Jukebox" segment!
The cast also will perform two original compositions that are being
"commissioned" for this concert: one by USM alumnus Kevin Smith, and another by
a current musical theater major, Joseph Valliere of Old Orchard Beach. And there
will be a special preview of Maine State Music Theatre's 2009 summer season.
Reichert has been in residence at Maine State for 18 years, and several of these
USM alumni have performed there.
A number of talented alumni who are professionals, working in the business will
return just for this performance. Among those scheduled to perform are: Jason
Cook of Astoria, N.Y., (formerly of Pittsfield) Kelly Caufield of Portland
(Gorham); Brian Wilson of Jackson Heights, N.Y. (Belfast); Rosie Schoneberg
Hunter of Salem, Mass. (Limington); Anthony Teixeira of Astoria, N.Y. (South
