Problem Statement

The main focus of this research is to follow the rise and fall of the Portland waterfront that occurred between 1850-1920.  However, in order to get a better understanding, I have also included a brief account of the history prior to that time period and a short overview of what has taken place since the 1920s for a more complete history.

Research Questions and Objectives

  1. How has the function of the waterfront changed throughout it's history?  How has it responded to changing demands and new technology?

  2. In what ways has the waterfront influenced the rest of the city of Portland?  During what periods has this influence been the strongest? weakest?

  3. How have the economic activities influenced the development and placement of the cities infrastructure?

  4. How has the physical environment changed due to waterfront activities?

  5. What role has geographic location played in the success of Portland?  What changes have taken place making geographic location a smaller factor in Portland's success today?

Many books, articles and publications have focused on the history of Portland, but few address the waterfront specifically.  Of those, even fewer address the importance of geographic location. Thus, the main objective of this research is to integrate the history of Portland's waterfront with the geographic issues that are oftentimes overlooked, but are of great importance.
