The Bath Iron Works, once called Percy and Small Shipbuilding produced the largest ships of the day. The shipyard produced the Wyoming, a six massed ship stretching over 350 feet long, higher than a seven story building and possible of carrying 6000 tons of coal.
Today the Bath Iron Works is one of the most advanced shipbuilding facilities in the world. It employs more than 6000 Mainers and keeps towns like Georgetown, Woolwich, Bath, Brunswick, and Topsham economical turning. Without this large shipyard many natives would be forced to move and relocate their families into a location where they could support themselves. BIW continues to keep the tri-county areas economically stable and full of natives.
