Streetscapes are an important and often overlooked aspect of the urban environment. They are an integral part of the city and its communities. The Franklin Arterial was an urban renewal project that was short sighted and based on expediency. It was a part of a transportation system that was detrimental to Portland and its communities and created a streetscape that was an expressway, lacking all aspects of a good street. Good streetscapes aid in the development of the community. A proper balanced transportation system including pedestrians, bicycles, public transportation and cars develop a street that is advantageous for residences, businesses, and recreation.
