Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are a series of maps throughout the 20th century created for the purpose of documenting the types of materials used in building structures and their use on land parcels, which were then catalogued for insurance purposes. These maps were drawn and edited by hand and reflect an incredible resource for researching previous land uses. The maps we have chosen to display show two neighborhoods within Bayside in the years of 1942 and 1972, which was the year most recently edited.
These images have been provided to us through the courtesy of the Osher Map Library at the university of Southern Maine. We would like to thank George Carhart for his help.
