Course Goals:

By taking this course you will...

become familiar with instrumentation used in a chemistry laboratory

develop a background of major chemistry and instrumental principles, and how these are applied in scientific research

gain a greater appreciation of good scientific research

describe and be able to use instrumentation in the lab, and be able to apply these methods for analyzing various compounds

apply your knowledge to understanding current research, and discuss/debate the methods used and the quality of the research

Quantitatively express levels and error of various compounds in various solutions and media

Bound Laboratory Notebook (composition notebook is fine)

Apron (recommended)

Laboratory Requirements

Laboratory Notebooks

Notebooks need to be brought to each lab, and the pre-lab section should be completed before lab, and will be checked by the instructor during the lab. Details of the notebooks are described here.


Laboratory Reports

Reports will follow the common structure of a journal article and require background research in journal articles, a brief write up of your methods, reporting of your results, analysis of the data, and an explanation of your conclusions. For more information on lab reports click here.


Assessment and Grading

Laboratory Reports- 80%

Lab Notebook- 20%
