Assignment #1

Turn in your assignment preferably in class, alternatively, in my mailbox by 4:00 pm. 126 Bedford Ave. Portland campus.

First, choose a New York Times article which focuses on an international issue.

Second, summarize the article noting the nature of the story and the players involved. I should be able to get a good encapsulation of the news story from your summary..

Thrid, find coverage of the same news story in two other international papers.  One of the papers must come from the developing world, or what some call the "Global South." (See Chapter Five for the types of countries in the Global South).  NewsLink is a very good website that links you directly to newspapers from around the world. Or try Online Newspapers, a newspaper boasting links to 5,000 newspapers. Google News is also very appropriate. You can also search the web for other sites.

Fourth, compare and contrast the coverage of the news story in each paper.  What were some of the interesting similarities and differences that you found? Why do you think the story is covered the same or differently in each paper? What conclusions can you draw from this exercise?

Please print out each news story and staple to your assignment.

Do not forget to use citations in your paper. For examples please see the Department of Political Science's style guide.
Look specifically at how to cite a newspaper article.
