ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN LITERACY EDUCATION #8914- search extended

The College of Education and Human Development at the University of Southern Maine is seeking an assistant or associate professor of literacy education for a tenure-track position in the Professional Education Department.

The literacy education program serves both pre-service and in-service candidates and produces high-quality educators capable of designing literacy instruction for all students, including instruction for English language learners. The program develops and supports leaders in literacy education through graduate course work, collaborative staff development with school systems, and outreach programs including summer experiences.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester, maintain a research agenda related to literacy learning and instruction, and engage in professional service.   Teaching opportunities are in the pre-service teacher education programs, masters programs in literacy and ESL, and in the post-masters Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study program.   In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise clinical experiences and contribute to program initiatives with the Teacher Education Department and department programs in Special Education and Educational Leadership.

Requirements for the position include earned doctorate with an emphasis in literacy education at the time of employment, public school teaching, expertise in reading theory, knowledge of the processes of early literacy acquisition, and elementary or secondary school literacy. Requirements, appropriate to rank, also include experience in college teaching, research, publication, grant writing, evidence of literacy leadership, and strong collaborative skills.

The university has an institution-wide commitment to inclusion, diversity, multiculturalism, and community. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of skills in early literacy/k-5 literacy theory and practice, bilingual/multilingual/ESL literacy, experience with on-line teaching, and national or local involvement in political initiatives that influence literacy instruction.
