Phi Alpha Theta

The International Honor Society in History, Phi Alpha Theta, is one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious academic honor societies active on college campuses. With more than seven hundred chapters and 200,000 initiates, Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose purpose is to promote the study of history, and to encourage the work of undergraduate and graduate history majors.

The society is active in organizing regional and national conferences where students can present their work, as well as in organizing study trips and local events that bring together historians at all levels to share work and information. The society also sponsors a number of scholarships and prizes to support and encourage the careers of young historians.

To join the University of Southern Maine Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, students must have completed at least 18 semester hours in history, with a GPA in history of at least 3.1, and an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
