Businesses today cannot stress enough the importance of management systems and people for improving environmental performance. The information presented by Dr. Robert Sroufe sheds light on important elements of management such as communication, reporting and control, accountability, and sustainable operations. The combined results of multiple studies show the influence of these management elements on performance and help to explain why firms benefit from environmental activities. An understanding of operations performance is better understood after looking at manufacturing-sector firms and the relationships among different elements of management systems. The results of field studies and empirical research over the last ten years are combined to demonstrate impacts on improved performance and the benefits management can receive from environmental activities.
