
The Classical Studies major is USM’s traditional Classics major, grounded in the intensive study of ancient language and literature. It trains students in the close reading of texts in the original ancient Greek and Latin, and includes courses in English to provide a comprehensive background to the various cultures of Mediterranean antiquity. This degree also prepares students for post-graduate work in Classics, should they wish to pursue a career in teaching. In addition, it is linked to a Teacher Certification program in the College of Education at USM, which provides nationally-recognized training for careers in K-12 education.
The minimum number of credits (exclusive of the University’s Core curriculum) for the self-designed major in Classical studies: 36. For grade requirements, please refer to the Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures section of the USM catalog.
For the concentration in Latin, the student takes three upper-level (above 100) courses in Latin and one upper-level course in Greek; for the concentration in Greek, the student takes three upper-level courses in Greek and one upper-level course in Latin.
