DES Student Research ProjectsDES’s philosophy is that students learn best by doing. We strongly encourage student participation in research with faculty and faculty-guided student research in courses and as independent projects. Each year, USM holds a daylong symposium on student research. DES students are always well represented in presenting their research under the direction of a faculty mentor. Recent poster titles from DES student posters: • Arsenic in Soils in the Bayside Neighborhood of Portland • Bayside Phytoremediation Project • Evaluating Policy to Control Mercury Emissions in the United States • Household Hazardous Wastes in Maine • Industrial Hemp: Past, Present and Future of a Versatile Renewable Resource • Assessing the Problem of Mercury in Maine’s Groundwater due to Agricultural Utilization of Sewage Sludge • Relationship between Soil Organic Carbon, Soil Texture, and Degree of Disturbance in Three Urban Soil Systems • Riparian Zone Protection In Cumberland County Maine • School Children’s Exposure to Diesel Exhaust from Buses: Application of the Policy Process Wood Pressure Treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) • The Effect of Airborne Particulates on Asthma: A Maine Case Study
