Merrie Cartwright

Biographical Sketch:

Merrie Cartwright received her B.S. in Biological Sciences/Marine Biology from Florida Institute of Technology and then promptly decided to return to her native New England.  While attending graduate school at the University of Maine at Orono, she self-tailored an interdisciplinary program in applied aquatic ecology, with members of her advisory committee including fisheries and wildlife faculty and resource managers, as well as a traditional ecologist.

Merrie has always found value in an interdisciplinary approach to conservation science and resource management, which is a core element of DES's mission. She also feels a natural affinity for the policy-related aspects of DES, having worked on national-level scientific policy issues as a postdoctoral intern at the National Academy of Sciences (the Commission on Geosciences, Environment and Resources).

Prior to arriving at USM, Merrie served for four years as the primary program manager of a Maine-based scientific granting and public service organization, with many ties to environmental science and education programs throughout the state. She brings this management and collaboration experience to DES, along with her scientific background in aquatic ecology.
