Aphra Behnd [1640-1689] broke every rule. She was a spy, she was a writer, she was thrown in jail several times for her debts and her politics. Her origins are unknown.

Professor Cole's publications include essays on eighteenth-century literature and culture and, more recently, on contemporary global politics.  She is researching a book on the concepts of sympathy and torture in early modern Europe.
