Textbook:  Physics, Sixth Edition, by Douglas Giancoli.  When you are buying books, you will notice that there is a study guide available as well as the textbook.  The study guide is optional; the textbook is required.  There is also a lab manual for PHY 114K if you are also taking the lab course.

Instructor:  R. Coakley  coakley@usm.maine.edu,  780-4733

Brief Description:  This is an algebra based physics course for science majors.  It covers mechanics and thermodynamics.  The second semester course, Physics 112, is a continuation into Electricity, Magnetism,Optics and contemporary physics.

Please check to make sure you are enrolled in the right course. The two semester Physics 111 - 112 sequence satisfies the requirements for the Biology major, and may be satisfactory for premedical students.  It does not satisfy the Chemistry, Computer Science or Engineering requirements.  You should check the requirements for your major carefully to see if Physics101, Physics 111 (this course) or Physics 121K - General Physics - is the one you need. Algebra is used extensively in this course. Physics 121 uses calculus, and Physics 101 makes only minimal use of algebra.

Grading:  Grades are based on three tests and a final exam.
