Thinking Matters is a great example to introduce new students to the range of possibilities open to them in their years ahead at USM. Thiking Matters is a student conference that takes place each spring.  The presentations are done by students who are ususally in their last year or two of college. You can read about some examples of presentations here and you can visit the Thinking Matters web site here.  Even though, there are an amazing variety of topics presented each year, nevertheless, Thinking Matters is by no means the only example of undergraduate activities at USM. For example, in the Fall of 2009, a new, annual conference will begin that is going to be called Civic Matters.  There isn’t a web site for the new conference yet, but you can get an introducition to civic engagement here.  Reading about civic engagement will help you realize your opportunities during college are not limited to campus but can also take advantage of the welcoming and diverse opportunities in the Southern Maine region. Another wonderful example of student projects and creativity is the BFA Senior Thesis Exhibit you can view here, which is part of the USM Art Galleries calendar that includes more examples of undergraduate work.  Or another example is the Student Business Competition. The list of examples of undergraduate activities at USM is long and wonderfully diverse.  The key message for a new student is that you can start thinking and planning and building connections beyond your classes. You can start right now, and the more you do, the more satisfying and valuable your college education will become.
