The Belgrade Circle, formerly Belgrade Circle - Association of Independent Intellectuals,
has been active in Belgrade since January 1992. The founding act stated that
the primary concern of the Belgrade Circle is to promote the values of a democratic,
civil, open and plural society trough various public forums, open circulation
of ideas and defence of independent creative activities. Since the beginning,
the Circle has consistently supported and encouraged critical stances toward
totalitarian ideologies on both the left and the right, as well as towards intolerance
of rights of the Other (cultural, ethnic, political...), hate propaganda, aggression
and the war, nationalism and ethnocentrism, ethnic cleansing, encouraging of
war crimes, barbaric destruction of towns and forced migrations in the territory
of former Yugoslavia. All activities of the Belgrade Circle are subordinated
to these aims.
The clearest proclamation of general goals is contained in the Preamble to the Statute of the Belgrade Circle:
"The Belgrade Circle is an association which advocates the establishment of a free, open, pluralist, democratic and rational civil society. The Belgrade Circle supports the establishment of a general culture of peace, dialogue and co-operation, as well as the tolerance of all political, religious, national and other differences. The Belgrade Circle supports creation of the institutional bases for the protection of all human and individual rights, civic freedoms and the rights of the Others. The Belgrade Circle will work on the theoretical and practical affirmation of these aims in co-operation with similar organisations in Yugoslavia or abroad".
