Bethany Dumas Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the
University of Southern Maine women’s outdoor track and field team added another
accolade to her resume Friday when she was named the Little East Conference
Rookie Field Athlete of the Year following a vote by the conference’s head
coaches.
Dumas is the first USM women’s competitor to win a major, end-of-the-season
award during the outdoor season. She shared the indoor season Rookie of the
Year award with Kim Mangum of Rhode Island College.
The school record holder in the pole vault, Dumas established that mark at
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships when
she cleared 3.60 meters (11-9 3/4) to finish sixth and provisionally qualify for
the NCAA national championships. Dumas shattered her previous record of 3.40
meters (11-1 3/4) set two weeks earlier at the New England Division III
Championships.
The LEC Rookie of the Week on four occasions during the spring season,
Dumas won the New England Alliance and Little East Conference titles in the pole
vault with a mark of 3.12 meters (10-2 3/4). The versatile Dumas also placed
second in the javelin with a personal best throw of 38.10 meters (125-0), third
in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.96 and eighth in the 100-meter
hurdles.
Dumas also earned citations in the pole vault at two other major meets in
May. She finished fourth at the New England Division III Championships after
clearing 3.40 meters (11-1 3/4) to break the school record of 3.39 meters (11-1)
set by Melissa Bellemore in April 2006. Dumas tied for eighth place at the
NEIcAAA (New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) Championships
when she cleared 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4). She also received a citation in the
javelin at the N.E. Division III meet for her sixth place finish (34.69 meters).

Patterson Earns All-ECAC Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Freshman Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) of
the University of Southern Maine women’s outdoor track and field team earned
All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honors Friday with her eighth
place finish in the discus at the ECAC Division Three Outdoor Track and Field
Championships held at Springfield College.
Patterson earned the final scoring position, and All-ECAC honors, with her
throw of 36.70 meters (120-5). She joins teammates Bethany Dumas (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) and Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) on the All-ECAC honor roll.
In the first day of competition on Thursday, Dumas, a freshman, had a
sixth-place finish in the pole vault clearing 3.60 meters (11-9 3/4). That mark
set a school record in the event, breaking the previous mark of 3.38 meters (11-
1) set by Melissa Bellemore in April 2006, and surpassed the NCAA provisional
qualifying standard of 3.50 meters (11-5 3/4).
Day, a senior, brought home a fifth-place result in the javelin with a
career best throw of 35.61 meters (119-2).
Also competing at the meet was sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) who tied for 13th place in the high jump clearing 1.57
meters (5-1 3/4).
Southern Maine collected eight points to finish in a tie for 30th place
with three other schools among the 56 teams that scored in the meet. The meet
concludes the regular season for the Huskies.

Dumas, Day Shine at ECAC Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and
senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women’s
outdoor track and field team earned All-ECAC honors Thursday in the first day of
competition at the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III
Outdoor Track and Field Championships being staged at Springfield College.
Dumas earned a sixth-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 3.60 meters
(11-9 3/4). That mark set a school record in the event, breaking the previous
mark of 3.38 meters (11-1) set by Melissa Bellemore in April 2006, and surpassed
the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 3.50 meters (11-5 3/4). The NCAA
field will be announced Monday.
Day brought home a fifth-place result in the javelin with a personal best
throw of 35.61 meters (119-2).
The Huskies earned seven points in the first day of competition. They are
in a three-way tie for 11th place with Frostburg State College and Smith
College. Waynesburg (Pa.) College leads the standings after the 32 points.
Competition continues on Friday (10:00 a.m.).

Dumas Picks Up All-New England Honors
AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the
University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team earned All-New
England honors at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association
(NEIcAAA) Championships held Friday and Saturday at the University of
Massachusetts.
On Friday, Dumas finished in a tie for eighth place in the pole with Olivia
Kalinowska of Northeastern University. Each cleared 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4).
Dumas also placed 13th in the 400-meter hurdles trials with a season best time
of 1 minute, 6.50 seconds.
Senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) placed 16th in the javelin with her throw
of 34.56 meters (113-5). Freshman Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) finished
18th in the discus with a throw of 35.30 meters (115-10).
Boston College took the team title with 87 points. Rounding out the top
five were the University of New Hampshire with 79.50 points, Northeastern
University with 59.50, host UMass with 55 and the University of Rhode Island
with 49.50. Dumas picked up one-half point for her eighth place tie.
The Huskies close the 2009 regular season this coming Thursday and Friday
when they compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III
Championships being held at Springfield College.

Bethany Dumas Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time this spring, University of Southern
Maine women's outdoor track and field freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) has been named the Little East Conference Rookie Field Athlete of
the Week.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Dumas was being cited for her outstanding performance at the New
England Division III Championships held at Springfield College last weekend.
Dumas previously was named the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week on April 6 and
April 13. She also was the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week on April 20.
At the New England Division III Championships, Dumas scored in two events
to help USM earn a 12th place finish overall. Dumas was fourth in the pole
vault clearing 3.40 meters (11-1 3/4) and sixth in the javelin with a throw of
34.69 meters (113-10).
Southern Maine complied 17 points for its 12th place finish. The
Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the team title, holding off Williams
College, 152.50-143. Middlebury College, with 68 points, Bowdoin College with
62, and Wheaton College with 57 rounded out the top five teams.
Southern Maine returns to competition this weekend at the NEIcAAA (New
England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) Championships being held
at the University of Massachusetts.

Three Earn Division III All-New England Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine
women's outdoor track and field team earned Division III All-New England honors
Saturday helping the Huskies to a 12th place finish among the 26 scoring teams
at the New England Division III Championships held Friday and Saturday at
Springfield College.
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) picked up two citations with
her fourth place finish in the pole vault and sixth place result in the javelin.
Senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) had USM's best finish placing third in the
javelin. Freshman Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) earned a sixth place
finish in the discus.
In the pole vault, Dumas cleared 3.40 meters (11-1 3/4) and she threw the
javelin 34.69 meters (113-10). Day threw the javelin a personal best 35.61
meters (116-10). Patterson heaved the discus 36.77 meters (120-8).
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the team title holding off
Williams College, 152.50-143. Middlebury College, with 68 points, Bowdoin
College with 62, and Wheaton College with 57 round out the top five teams.
Southern Maine complied 17 points.
Other notable performances in the meet included senior Emily Poliquin
(Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) who had a career best 4.86-meter (16-10 1/2) effort
in the long jump to finish 10th, sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) placed ninth in the high jump clearing 1.53 meters (5-0
1/4), and senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) had a season-best 4:49.31 run in
the 1500 meters.

Gabby Cyr Named ECAC Division III Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team has been named the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Track Athlete of the Week for
her outstanding performance last Saturday at the New England Alliance and Little
East Conference Championships held at Westfield (Mass.) State College. The
announcement was made today by the ECAC office located in Centerville, Mass.
Cyr was an impressive double winner in the LEC meet, capturing the 1500 and
5,000 meters. Running in unseasonably warm conditions (mid 80s), Cyr turned in
a time of 4 minutes, 51.17 seconds to win the 1500, and crossed the line in
20:03.41 to capture the 5,000. She was the defending champion in both events.
In the Alliance scoring, Cyr duplicated her 2008 performance taking first
in the 1500 and second in the 5,000. Cyr's 1500-meter time qualified her for
this weekend's New England Division III Championships.
Southern Maine won its 10th consecutive Little East championship with 183
points. Rhode Island College placed second with 153 points, and Eastern
Connecticut State University was third with 98.
In the Alliance meet, Westfield State College snapped Southern Maine's
string of nine consecutive championships by scoring 162.5 points. Southern
Maine was second with 136. The Alliance meet involves teams from the Little
East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Each conference scores its respective conference champion from the
meet.
The Huskies will travel to Springfield College this Friday and Saturday
(May 1-2) to compete in the New England Division III Championships.

Southern Maine Second at New England Alliance Championships
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's outdoor
track and field team won four individual titles Saturday en route to a second
place finish at the New England Alliance Championships hosted by Westfield State
College.
Host Westfield State won the team title with 162.5 points, snapping
Southern Maine's string of nine consecutive championships (2000-2008). USM was
second with 136 points, followed by Rhode Island College with 111.5 points,
Worcester State College with 94 and Eastern Connecticut State University with
66. The New England Alliance Championships involves schools from the Little
East Conference (LEC) and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC). Scoring for each conference's respective championship will not be
available until Sunday.
Winning titles for the Huskies were senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) in
the 1500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 51.17 seconds, junior Emily Artesani
(Orono, Maine) took first in the 400 meters with her time of 59.55, and freshmen
Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) won
the pole vault and discus events, respectively. Dumas cleared 3.12 meters (10-2
3/4) in the pole vault while Patterson threw the discus 37.49 meters (123-0).
Cyr, Artesani and Dumas also earned second place finishes in other events.
Cyr took silver in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:03.41, Artesani took
second in the 200 meters with her time of 26.14, and Dumas was runner-up in the
javelin with a personal best throw of 38.10 meters (125-0). Junior Sarah Myrick
(Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) also had a second place result in the 3,000-
meter steeplechase crossing the line in 12:29.03.
Sophomore Vanessa Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) had a
strong day in the throws, placing third in the discus with a throw of 32.87
meters (107-10) and the shot put with a personal best mark of 10.78 meters (35-4
1/2), and finishing fourth in the hammer with a throw of 41.37 meters (135-9).
Dumas also earned a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with her time of
1:07.96. Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) was third in the pole
vault clearing 2.97 meters (9-9), and classmate Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine)
took third in the 800 meters finishing in 2:26.61.
Earning fourth place finishes were senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) in the
javelin (35.06 meters/115-0) and sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) in the high jump (1.55 meters/5-1).
The Huskies return to action this Thursday through Saturday at the New
England Division III Championships being held at Springfield College

Dumas Named LEC Rookie Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third straight week, freshman Bethany Dumas
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track
and field team has been recognized by the Little East Conference with a weekly
honor.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Dumas has been selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week for
her outstanding performance last Saturday at the Aloha Relays. The previous two
weeks, Dumas was picked as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
Dumas posted USM's only victory at the annual meet held at Bowdoin College.
She took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1 minute, 7.10
seconds. Dumas also placed second in the pole vault clearing 3.40 meters (11-1
3/4) and third in the javelin with a throw of 33.88 meters (111-2).
Southern Maine finished fourth among the six teams competing at the event
with 91 points. Bowdoin took the team title with 244 points, followed by Bates
College with 150 and Colby College with 123.
The Huskies will travel to Westfield, Mass., this Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to
compete in the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships.

Southern Maine Fourth at Aloha Relays
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) posted
the only win as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's outdoor track
and field team placed fourth among six teams Saturday at the Aloha Relays held
at Bowdoin College.
Bowdoin took the team title with 244 points, followed by Bates College with
150, Colby College with 123 and USM with 91.
Dumas took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1 minute,
7.10 seconds. She also posted a second place result in the pole vault clearing
3.40 meters (11-1 3/4), and a third place result in the javelin with a throw of
33.88 meters (111-2).
Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) had a pair of second place finishes in
the 200 and 400 meters. Artesani finished with times of 26.35 in the 200 and
59.70 in the 400.
Freshman Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) had a second place result in
the discus with a throw of 41.84 (137-3) and a fourth in the shot put with a
throw of 10.75 meters (35-3 1/4). Both marks are personal bests, and the discus
mark qualified her for the New England Division III, NEIcAAA and ECAC Division
III Championships.
Sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) finished second in
the high jump clearing 1.58 meters (5-2 1/4). Senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine)
was second in the javelin with a throw of 34.33 meters (112-7).
Seniors Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls,
Maine/Lisbon) had fourth place results in the 1500 meters (4:56.00) and triple
jump (10.40 meters/34-1 1/2), respectively.
The Huskies travel to the Little East Conference and New England Alliance
Championships next weekend hosted by Westfield (Mass.) State College.

Bethany Dumas Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week

performance this past Saturday at the George Davis Invitational held at the
University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Dumas had another strong outing winning the pole vault by clearing 3.35
meters (10-6), placing second in the javelin with a throw of 35.72 meters (117-
2), and finishing seventh in the long jump with a leap of 4.87 meters (15-11
3/4). Dumas was one of two USM athletes to win an event at the non-team scoring
meet.
The Huskies will have two meets this week. They will be at the Bowdoin
Invitational on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.), and return to Bowdoin this Friday (3:00
p.m.) and Saturday (11:30 a.m.) for the annual Aloha Relays.

Dumas, Baird Win Events at UMass Lowell
LOWELL, Mass. -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and
sophomore Vanessa Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) of the
University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team each won
events Saturday at the George Davis Invitational held at the University of
Massachusetts Lowell. The meet was a non-team scoring event.
Dumas took the top spot in the pole vault, leading a 1-2 finish by USM, by
clearing 3.35 meters (10-6). Dumas also placed second in the javelin with a
throw of 35.72 meters (117-2) and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 4.87
meters (15-11 3/4).
Baird finished first in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of
42.36 meters (139-0). She also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of
10.32 meters (33-10 1/4).
Other notable performances were turned in by freshman Hannah Patterson
(Londonderry, N.H.) who was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 10.53 meters
(34-6 3/4), sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) who placed
fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.55 meters (5-1), senior Emily Poliquin
(Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) finished second in the triple jump with an effort
of 9.85 meters (32-3 3/4), senior Katie Day (Hampden, Maine) placed fourth in
the javelin with a throw of 33.76 meters (110-9) and sophomore Christina
Connolly (Boise, Idaho) who was second behind Dumas in the pole vault with a
mark of 2.75 meters (9-0 1/4).
Southern Maine will be back in action on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) at the Bowdoin
College Invitational.

Artesani, Dumas Saluted by Little East Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) and freshman
Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the University of Southern Maine women's
outdoor track and field team have been recognized by the Little East Conference
for their outstanding performances this past weekend at the Mt. Holyoke College
Invitational.
Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced
today that Artesani had been selected the Track Athlete of the Week and Dumas
was tabbed as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. The weekly honor was the
first of the outdoor season for Artesani and Dumas.
Artesani raced to victory in two events Saturday sweeping the 100 and 200-
meter dashes. She took the 100 with a time of 13.10 seconds to win by more than
four tenths of second, and later tripped the timer in 27.06 to win the 200 by
more than a full second.
Dumas had an outstanding day, winning two events and placing second in two
others. She took the top spot in the javelin with a facility-record throw of
37.27 meters (122-3), and was second in the pole vault after clearing 3.36
meters (11-0 1/4) and the long jump with a jump of 4.65 meters (15-3 1/4). On
the track, Dumas won the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 16.54 seconds.
Southern Maine travels to Massachusetts again this Saturday (10:00 a.m.) to
participate in the George Davis Invitational being held at the University of
Massachusetts Lowell.

Artesani, Dumas Double Winners at Mt. Holyoke Invitational
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) and freshman
Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) were double winners Saturday for the
University of Southern Maine women's outdoor track and field team competing at
the Mt. Holyoke Invitational in South Hadley, Mass. The event was a non-team
scoring meet.
Artesani took the top spot in the 100 meters with her time of 13.10
seconds, and came back later to take the 200 meters with a time of 27.06. Dumas
won the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.54 seconds, and the
javelin with a throw of 37.27 meters (122-3). Dumas also posted second place
results in the pole vault by clearing 3.36 meters (11-0 1/4) and the long jump
with a leap of 4.65 meters (15-3 1/4).
The only other USM competitor to post a first place result was senior Emily
Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) who won the triple jump with an effort of
10.19 meters (33-5 1/4).
Other second place finishes were turned in by sophomore Vanessa Baird
(Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) in the hammer throw with a toss of
35.86 meters (117-8), freshman Hannah Patterson (Londonderry, N.H.) in the
discus with a throw of 35.10 meters (115-2) and sophomore Katie McFadden
(Epping, N.H.) in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.90. Freshman
Stephanie Muscato (Peabody, Mass.) tied for second in the 100 meters with a time
of 13.51.
Muscato had a third place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 29.17,

Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) ran to a third place finish in the 800
meters with a time of 2:28.34. Sophomores Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) and Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) placed third in the
high jump and pole vault respectively. Hall jumped 1.49 meters (4-10 1/2) and
Connolly cleared 2.59 meters (8-6).
The Huskies will travel to the University of Massachusetts Lowell next
Saturday (10:00 a.m.) for the George Davis Invitational.

Dumas Wins Pole Vault, Third in Javelin at UCF Invitational
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the
University of Southern Maine women's track and field team opened the outdoor
season in style at the University of Central Florida Invitational, winning the
pole vault and placing third in the javelin.
On the opening day (Friday) of the two-day event, Dumas came in third in
the javelin when her second attempt sailed 35.35 meters (116-0). On Saturday,
she won the pole vault clearing 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4). Dumas also run the
400-meter hurdles, finishing 19th with a time of 1 minute, 10.24 seconds.
Others competing at the meet included sophomore Hillary Hall (Waldoboro,
Maine/Medomak Valley) who tied for sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.55
meters (5-1), sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) who was fifth in the
pole vault by clearing 3.05 meters (10-0), freshman Hannah Patterson
(Londonderry, N.H.) who was eighth in the discus with a best throw of 40.02
meters (131-0), and sophomore Vanessa Baird (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft
Academy) was ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 40.78 meters (133-9).
In the running events, sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) place 17th
in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.43. Junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine)
competed in the 200 and 400 meters. She posted a time of 27.01 in the 200 and
1:01.61 in the 400.
Southern Maine returns from its Florida spring training trip and will
travel to the Mt. Holyoke Invitational in Saturday.
