                       R.I.T. Eliminates Southern Maine, 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The third-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers
used a three-goal second period to fend off a challenge from the sixth-seeded
University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-2, in quarterfinal action of the ECAC
Division III Women's East Ice Hockey playoffs Saturday night in Rochester.
With the win, R.I.T. improves to 18-7-1 on the season while the Huskies
conclude their season with a record of 5-18-2. R.I.T. advances to the ECAC
semifinals and will face top-seeded and defending champion Manhattanville College.
Southern Maine registered the game's first goal and took a 1-0 lead following
a goal from freshman defensemen Meg Hansen (Westford, Mass.) with 14:10 gone off
the clock. Hansen's goal, the first of her collegiate career, was assisted by
junior forward Meaghan Barnaby (Hampton, N.H.) and freshman forward Lindsay Herzog
(Hightstown, N.J.).
R.I.T. notched the equalizer on a power-play conversion midway through the
second period when Stacey McConnell (Millgrove, ONT) banged in a shot past USM
sophomore goalie Jen Arno (Westford, Mass.) with five minutes to play in the
frame.
R.I.T. took the lead less than two minutes later following a goal from
Isabelle Richard (Malartic, PQ) and then went ahead 3-1 when Allison Berstein
(Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) wristed in the game-winner with 1:59 to play in the period.
The Huskies would trim the lead to one at 3-2 when senior co-captain Molly
Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished an assist from fellow co-captain Audra Hill
(Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) late in the
third period, but it was too little to late for the Huskies as R.I.T. held on for
the win.
Arno was spectacular in the loss for the Huskies making a career-high 51
saves to keep Southern Maine within striking distance. Arno's 51 saves ranks is
the fourth highest save total posted by a USM goalie. Breanna Dobbe made 20 saves
for the Tigers.

New England College Holds Off Southern Maine 3-1

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Marissa Porri (Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored a pair of
goals to lead the visiting New England College Pilgrims to a 3-1 victory over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's East game Sunday afternoon
at the USM Ice Arena. The game was the regular season finale for both teams.
The win extended the Pilgrims unbeaten string to five games (4-0-1) heading
into the next weekend's playoff first round. New England College is 10-12-2
overall and 10-7-2 in the league. Southern Maine dropped its third straight to
fall to 5-17-2 overall and 4-13-2 in the league.
Sophomore Ashley Watkins (Charleston, S.C.) put the Pilgrims on the board
first as she netted a power-play goal at 6:40 of the opening period. Freshman
Tanya Cascun (Etobicoke, Ontario) picked up the only assist.
Porri made it 2-0 at 13:26 when she collected the puck in the left wing
circle, skated around the defense into the right wing circle and wristed a shot
past USM sophomore goalie Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.) for her 14th goal of
the season.
Southern Maine scored the only goal of the middle period when sophomore
Jessica Lortie Cooper City, Fla.) caught NEC sophomore goalie Jacquelyn Parker
(Keene, N.H.) by surprise with a wrist shot from a bad angle. The unassisted goal
was Lortie's eighth of the season.
The issue remained in doubt until the final minute when Porri corralled a
loose puck at her own blue line, eluded a couple of USM skaters and slid a 50-foot
shot into an empty net. Porri had five goals in the two-game series.
Larnerd played well for the Huskies, finishing with 33 saves before being
lifted for the extra attacker. She made 17 saves in the third period alone to
keep it a one-goal game. Parker was credited with 18 saves for the game.
Southern Maine will be the sixth seed in the upcoming playoffs and will
travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for a single-elimination game next
Saturday. New England College will be the fourth seed in the tournament and host
the University of Massachusetts Boston in a first round game.

Huskies Rally to Defeat Amherst 4-3

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored three
times within a span of 1:23 early in the third period to erase a one-goal
deficit, then held off the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to post a 4-3 victory in a
non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Orr Rink in Amherst, Mass.
The win snapped the Huskies’ four-game losing streak and improved their
overall record to 4-14-2. Amherst, which had won its last two games, slips to
5-9-5 overall.
Trailing 2-1 at the start of the third period, the Huskies would take
advantage of a 5-on-3 power play situation to score the tying goal. Sophomore
Jennifer Carboni (Cheshire, Conn.) converted from sophomore Jennifer Cordone
(Fulton, N.Y.) for her third goal of the season at 4:28.
Southern Maine would make the Lord Jeffs pay by netting the go ahead goal
27 second later while still enjoying the 5-on-4 advantage. Sophomore Jessica
Lortie (Cooper City, Fla.) lit the lamp for the seventh time this season
knocking in a rebound. Cordone and freshman Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie,
N.Y.) picked up the assists. The Huskies’ power play, which came into the game
having converted just 4 of 99 chances, clicked on 2 of 5 opportunities against
the Lord Jeffs.
Junior co-captain Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass.) scored what proved to be
the game winner at 5:51 off a set up from Quartuccio and sophomore Kristin
Pappolla (Pelham, N.H.) to complete the Huskies outburst. Hill received the
puck in her own defensive zone before going end-to-end to score with a shot high
to the glove side of sophomore goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, N.J.)
Amherst junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, Conn.) netted her team-leading ninth
goal of the season at 7:59 to cut the margin to one, but USM sophomore
goaltender Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.) would hold the fort the rest of
the way to preserve the win for the Huskies. The Lord Jeffs out shot the
Huskies 41-27 for the game, including by a 31-14 margin over the final two
periods.
The host team scored the only goal of the first period when the teams were
playing five aside. Sophomore Meghan Dickoff (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored her
third of the season at 14:31 to give the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 lead.
The Amherst lead would double in the first minute of the second period as
junior Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored her seventh goal of the season.
Southern Maine responded 44 seconds later as freshman Courtney Fenney
(Framingham, Mass.) put the visitors on the board with her second goal of the
season.
Larnerd finished the game with 38 saves to pick up her third win of the
season. Grabowski made 23 stops before being lifted in the final minute in
favor of the extra attacker as the Lord Jeffs pressed in vain for the equalizing
goal.
Southern Maine hits the road again next weekend for ECAC Women’s East
conference games at Castleton State College on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) and Saint
Anselm College on Sunday (3:00 p.m.). Amherst will host Holy Cross in a non-

                       Rensselaer Blanks Southern Maine 3-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Kari Rabatin (Brookhaven, N.Y.) had a goal and an
assist to lead the nationally-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers to
a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's
East game Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the fifth straight for the Engineers who were ranked ninth in
this week's USCHO.com Division III poll. Rensselaer improved its record to 15-3-0
overall and 14-2-0 in the conference. Southern Maine, playing its second straight
game against a nationally ranked opponent, dropped to 3-12-2 overall and 3-9-2 in
the conference. The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon.
Rabatin provided the Engineers the only goal they would need when she tapped
in a rebound 26 seconds into the second period. Freshman Kelly Barbera
(Nesconset, N.Y.) took the original shot that was stopped by USM sophomore
netminder Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.), but Larnerd lost track of the
rebound which Rabatin slipped in the net for her eight goal of the season.
Sophomore Sarah Daniel (Calgary, Alb.) doubled the margin at 6:44 when she
beat Larnerd on a similar play. Senior Bridget Rice (Bowie, Md.) had her shot
stopped by Larnerd, but the rebound went to the uncovered Daniel who had a wide
open net to shoot at. The goal chased Larnerd from the game in favor of sophomore
Jen Arno (Westford, Mass.) who kept the score at 2-0 through the end of the
period.
Junior Julie Welte (Pueblo, Col.) scored the only goal of the final sliding a
shot back across the grain to beat Arno.
The Engineers had a decided edge in shots on goal, outshooting the Huskies
44-11 for the game. Senior goalie Julie Vallarelli (Arlington, Mass.), who had
not allowed a goal all season, stretched her string of scoreless minutes played to
260 stopping all 11 shots she faced. Larnerd had 16 saves before giving way to
Arno who stopped 25.

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Jessica Prudhomme (Lafayette, La.) scored a pair
of goals and freshman goalie Breanna Dobbe (Poway, Calif.) stopped all 22 shots
she faced to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers to a 5-0 victory
over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's East game played
Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win gave the Tigers a sweep of the two-game weekend series and was their

Prudhomme gave the visitors the only goal they would need when she drove a
shot from 40 feet past USM sophomore goalie Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.)
for a power-play goal at 14:54. Junior Nicole Gedney (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked
up the only assist.
In the final minute of the first period, freshman Jackie Fraser (Fergus,
Ontario) and Prudhomme would light the lamp 20 seconds apart to make it 3-0.
Fraser scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season at 19:02, knocking home
the rebound of a shot by freshman Allison Bernstein (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.). Fraser
would set up Prudhomme's second goal from the right side of the cage.
Freshman Sarah Wilson (Poway, Calif.) netted the only goal of the second
period at 17:36. Sophomore Stacey McConnell (Millgrove, Ontario) took the original
shot from the blue line that was blocked by a USM defender. The rebound went
right to Wilson in the right face-off circle and she beat Larnerd with a 25-foot
wrister before the Huskies netminder could recover.
Gedney scored the only goal of the final period on a breakaway at 15:19.
Larnerd played another strong game in goal for the Huskies stopping 28 shots.
Southern Maine will host St. Michael's College in a two-game series next

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Alysia Park (Dallas, Texas) scored a pair of third
period power-play goals to help the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers come
from behind to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-2 in an ECAC

goals to overcome an outstanding goaltending performance by USM sophomore Justene
Larnerd (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
Senior Kasie Strong (Groton, Mass.) got the Tigers on the board at 7:14 to
tie the game on a breakaway with a nifty backhand move across the goal mouth to
slip the puck by Larnerd.
Midway through the period while the Tigers were enjoying the power play,
Strong dished a pass across the front of the goal to Park who tapped it past the
helpless Larnerd. Senior Kendra Bredlau (Pleasanton, Calif.) also drew an assist.
The same trio combined just over two minutes later to notch what appeared to
be an insurance goal, but what turned out to be the game winner.
USM senior Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) cut the margin to one with a
shorthanded goal as she knocked in the rebound of senior Audra Hill's (Braintree,
Mass.) shot that had been stopped by RIT sophomore goalie Nicki Werner
(Quakertown, Penn.). Unfortunately for the Huskies, there were just eight seconds
left in the game.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead at 5:40 of the second period when sophomore
Jessica Lortie (Cooper City, Fla.) netted a power-play goal during a scramble in
front of Werner.
Werner finished the game with 16 saves while Larnerd had 38 saves, including
19 in the second period when the Tiger outshot the Huskies 19-6.

Hill and Zogby Named Southern Maine Women's Ice Hockey Captains

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford
Central) and junior forward Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass./QNQ Girls Academy) have
been named co-captains of the 2004-2005 University of Southern Maine women's ice
hockey team.
With a youthful roster that includes just three seniors and six first-year
athletes, Hill and Zogby will be relied upon to lead the Huskies into its
challenging 25-game schedule that includes 19 ECAC East contests. Last season,
Southern Maine finished with a respectable 14-10-1 overall record and a 10-6-1
conference mark, bowing out in the first round of the ECAC East tournament in a 3-
2 overtime loss to conference rival New England College.
"Audra and Molly blend well together to make excellent co-captains for our
team," said first-year head coach Amanda Adams. "They are both very high-energy
individuals with a great deal of commitment to hockey, the team and themselves; I
am confident that they both will work well together to lead the team this season.
"One of the keys to our success this season will be how quickly the players
can adjust to a new system," noted Adams. "Audra and Molly will be vital in this
aspect through their leadership both on and off the ice."
Hill, a 2004 ECAC Women's East All-Academic Team honoree, finished last
season as the Huskies third-leading goal-scorer, tallying nine goals throughout
the season. Hill added five assists on the season to compliment her goal total
which included a team-leading three game-winners. A gifted two-way athlete, Hill
is essential to the Huskies transition game.
Also a 2004 ECAC Women's East All-Academic Team selection, Zogby tallied
three goals and passed off nine assists in 2003-2004. Over the past three
seasons, Zogby has been a significant contributor to Southern Maine's offense
totaling 19 goals and 13 assists.
Hill and Zogby will lead the Huskies into their 2004-2005 season opener this
Saturday (November 13) when Southern Maine hits the road in its season-opener
against ECAC East opponent M.I.T. at 3 p.m.
Following this weekend's game, Southern Maine will play eight more contests
to close out the first semester, including six ECAC East games. Highlighting the
first semester schedule is a two-game home series against conference-power
Manhattanville (Nov. 19 -20), followed by clash with in-state rival Colby (Nov.
23).
After the Thanksgiving break, Southern Maine will travel to take on
conference opponents the College of the Holy Cross (Dec. 4 -5) and UMass-Boston
(Dec. 10-11) which will be offset by the team's lone home contest of December when
the Huskies take on Bowdoin College (Dec. 8).
The Huskies will start the 2005 portion of their schedule on the road against
Salve Regina University (Jan. 8 -9) before hosting Rochester Institute of
Technology (Jan. 15 -16) and St. Michael's (Jan. 21-22) in ECAC East action.
Southern Maine will take a break from its conference schedule when it travels to
Brunswick, Maine for its second contest of the year against in-state power Bowdoin
(Jan. 25), before hosting Rensselaer in a two-game home series (Jan. 28-29).
In February, the Huskies begin a five-game march on the road, opening with
Connecticut College (Feb. 5) and Amherst (Feb.6) in non-league games, followed by
two games against ECAC East newcomers Castleton State (Feb. 12) and St. Anselm's
(Feb. 13). Closing out the road-stand for the Huskies will by familiar foe Colby
(Feb. 15) for Southern Maine's second game of its two-game series with the White
Mules. The Huskies will then close out their regular season against conference
rival New England College (Feb 19-20).

Amanda Adams Named Women's Ice Hockey Coach at USM

GORHAM, Maine -- Amanda Adams, former head coach of women's ice hockey at
Quinnipiac University, has been named the new head coach for women's ice hockey at
the University of Southern Maine. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the
announcement of Adams appointment following an extensive search process.
Adams, who spent the past year working on her master's degree in education at
the University of Denver, becomes the fourth head coach in the seven-year history
of the Huskies program. She takes over the reins from David Venditti who resigned
after four seasons to take the women's ice hockey head coach position at Colby
College.
"I am honored and thrilled to have been selected as the next head coach of
the USM women's ice hockey team. Southern Maine has been a school I've had my eye
on for quite some time," commented Adams.
"I was drawn to USM by the potential of the program for success, and the
setting of USM in southern Maine. USM's setting in [the Portland area], its
extensive course offerings and its past success make the institution an attractive
option for potential recruits.
"The team has had solid leadership and success in the past. I want to
continue that success, but add to it by knocking off one or two nemeses each year
until we win a league championship. That's not likely to happen in one year, but
I hope for it to happen within four years. I also want to continue to develop an
alumni program and both youth and senior women camps and clinics on our campus,"
Adams said in outlining the direction she hopes to take the program.
"While I enjoyed my Division I coaching experience, I left because I felt
that the goal in Division I was to win at all costs, at the expense, often, of the
players and their long-term goals. In Division III I feel that the needs and
goals of the players are the focus and that's how I believe it should be.
"Having served as a head coach before and as an assistant in the University
of Maine system, I expect this to be a smooth transition. I'm excited to get to
work and to get to know the team as players and individual," added Adams.
A four-year player at Yale University (1993-1997) while earning her
undergraduate degree in American Studies, Adams was the first recipient of that
program's "Bulldog Award," given annually to the player for "courage, grit and
determination on and off the ice" in 1997. She tallied 12 goals and 13 assists
during her playing career.
After graduating from Yale, Adams began her collegiate coaching experience at
the University of Maine as an assistant coach during the 1998-99 season. She
moved on to Minnesota State University - Mankato as an assistant coach for the
1999-2000 season before being named the first head coach of the Quinnipiac program
in 2000.
Quinnipiac played a limited schedule as a club team during the 2000-2001
campaign as Adams laid the foundation for the Bobcats first varsity season in
2001-2002. She guided the Bobcats to a 3-27-2 overall mark during their inaugural
Division I season.
"I'm very excited to have Amanda join our staff. She has an outstanding
background in the sport of women's ice hockey, is well respected by her
colleagues, and brings great enthusiasm to the position. From my very first
telephone conversation and throughout the interview process, I was extremely
impressed with her as a person. She will be a great addition to our staff,"
commented Bean.
USM will open the 2004-2005 season on the road November 13 at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, followed by a two-game home series the next weekend
(November 19-20) against defending league champion Manhattanville University. The
Huskies finished the 2003-2004 season 14-10-1 overall and 10-6-1 in the ECAC
Division III Women's East.

Venditti Resigns as USM Women's Ice Hockey Coach
USM Grad Named Head Coach at Colby College

GORHAM, Maine -- David Venditti, women's ice hockey and lacrosse head coach
for the past four years at the University of Southern Maine, has resigned from
that position to become the head coach of the women's ice hockey program at Colby
College.
Venditti will take over a Colby team that was 4-18-1 overall, and 4-11-1 in
the highly-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC),
last season.
During the past four years, Venditti guided the Huskies' women's ice hockey
program to a 60-34-8 record and a berth in the ECAC Women's East tournament
semifinals the last three seasons. He led the women's lacrosse team to a 17-43
mark over the last four years.
In that period, two of his ice hockey players were named to the AHCA All-
America team, one was the ECAC Player of the Year, another the Goalie of the Year
and four players earned All-ECAC honors.
A 1991 graduate of USM with a degree in economics, Venditti played four
seasons (1986-1990) for the Huskies, scoring 31 points on 15 goals and 16 assists.
He played his rookie season for former men's coach Gordie Clark and the last three
seasons under present USM men's coach Jeff Beaney. He served as an alternate
captain during the 1988-89 season.
Venditti was appointed USM women's ice hockey and lacrosse head coach on
September 1, 2000. He previously was the boys' ice hockey head coach at Cheverus
High School (Portland, Maine) for seven seasons and served one season as an
assistant coach of the women's ice hockey team at USM before being named the head
coach
In his inaugural season as head coach, Venditti guided the Huskies to a 15-6-
2 overall record. In the 2001-2002 season, he guided the team to a 16-7-4 mark,
the best in the team's brief history. In 2002-2003, the Huskies finished with a
15-11-1 mark, and last season he led the team to a 14-10-1 overall record.
While at Cheverus H.S. (1992-1999), Venditti compiled an 83-37-2 regular
season record and guided the Stags to six playoff berths.
USM Director of Athletics, Al Bean, indicated that a search for Venditti's
replacement would begin immediately.
