Venditti Resigns as USM Women's Ice Hockey Coach
USM Grad Named Head Coach at Colby College
GORHAM, Maine -- David Venditti, women's ice hockey and lacrosse head coach
for the past four years at the University of Southern Maine, has resigned from
that position to become the head coach of the women's ice hockey program at Colby
College.
Venditti will take over a Colby team that was 4-18-1 overall, and 4-11-1 in
the highly-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC),
last season.
During the past four years, Venditti guided the Huskies' women's ice hockey
program to a 60-34-8 record and a berth in the ECAC Women's East tournament
semifinals the last three seasons. He led the women's lacrosse team to a 17-43
mark over the last four years.
In that period, two of his ice hockey players were named to the AHCA All-
America team, one was the ECAC Player of the Year, another the Goalie of the Year
and four players earned All-ECAC honors.
A 1991 graduate of USM with a degree in economics, Venditti played four
seasons (1986-1990) for the Huskies, scoring 31 points on 15 goals and 16 assists.
He played his rookie season for former men's coach Gordie Clark and the last three
seasons under present USM men's coach Jeff Beaney. He served as an alternate
captain during the 1988-89 season.
Venditti was appointed USM women's ice hockey and lacrosse head coach on
September 1, 2000. He previously was the boys' ice hockey head coach at Cheverus
High School (Portland, Maine) for seven seasons and served one season as an
assistant coach of the women's ice hockey team at USM before being named the head
coach
In his inaugural season as head coach, Venditti guided the Huskies to a 15-6-
2 overall record. In the 2001-2002 season, he guided the team to a 16-7-4 mark,
the best in the team's brief history. In 2002-2003, the Huskies finished with a
15-11-1 mark, and last season he led the team to a 14-10-1 overall record.
While at Cheverus H.S. (1992-1999), Venditti compiled an 83-37-2 regular
season record and guided the Stags to six playoff berths.
USM Director of Athletics, Al Bean, indicated that a search for Venditti's
replacement would begin immediately.

Jamnik, Leonard Receive ECAC Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) and
freshman forward Kerry Leonard (Stamford, Conn.) of the University of Southern
Maine Huskies women’s ice hockey team have received postseason honors from the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for their standout play in the
Women’s East league this past winter.
Jamnik was named to the East All-Conference second team for the second
straight year while Leonard received All-Conference honorable mention and was
named to the All-Rookie Team. The All-Conference teams and individual awards
were announced Friday afternoon by the ECAC office in Centerville, Mass.
The holder of virtually every school record for goalies, Jamnik, an All-
Rookie team pick in 2000-2001 and an All-Conference first team selection and
Goalie of the Year in 2001-2002, compiled a 2.71 goals against average with a
.920 save percentage and an 11-10-1 record backstopping a very youthful team.
Jamnik was named Goalie of the Week once during the season.
During her stellar four-year career, Jamnik compiled a 1.97 goals against
average with a .924 save percentage (1,940 saves) and a 46-32-7 in 86
appearances.
The first USM player named to the All-Rookie team since Jamnik in 2000-
2001, and just the third in the history of the program, Leonard lead the Huskies
in scoring with 17 goals, including three game winners, and 13 assists for 30
points despite missing the first six games of the season while playing for USM’s
NCAA tournament-bound field hockey team. She tied the single season record with
two short-handed goals and had hat tricks in back-to-back games against Salve
Regina.
Leonard won, or shared, the Rookie of the Week award on two occasions
during the season.
Southern Maine finished the 2003-2004 season 14-10-1 overall and 10-6-1 in
league play (fifth seed in playoffs). The Huskies were eliminated in the first
round of the playoffs by New England College in the longest game in the
program’s history, a 3-2 decision that took 79:30 to play.

ECAC Division III Women's East Playoffs
USM Huskies Lose to New England College in OT 3-2
HENNIKER, N.H. -- Freshman forward Ashley Koltenback (Doylestown, Pa.)
netted her second goal of the game with 30 seconds remaining in the first sudden-
death overtime period to give the fourth-seeded New England College Pilgrims a 3-2
victory over the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in a first
round ECAC Division III Women's East playoff game Saturday afternoon.
The win moves the Pilgrims into next weekend's semifinal round against an
opponent to be determined. New England College moves on with a 14-8-3 overall
record. Southern Maine, which played the longest game (79:30) in school history,
concluded its season 14-10-1 overall.
Just as Southern Maine appeared to have successfully killed off two New
England College power plays late in the overtime, including a 37-second five-on-
three advantage, Koltenback knocked a shot past USM senior goalie Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) to end the game. Freshman defenseman Jessica Clute (Somersworth,
N.H.) picked up the only assist.
Koltenback's goal ended a comeback bid by the Huskies who went down 2-0 in
the first 9:33. Freshman Kerry Leonard (Stamford, Conn.) got the Huskies on the
board at 15:46 of the second period with her team-leading 17th goal of the season
off an assist from freshman Bevin Padgett (Needham, Mass.).
Padgett got the Huskies even at 4:11 of the third period when she lit the
lamp for the eighth time this season. Junior Jessica Judge (Porter, Maine) drew
the only assist.
Koltenback opened the scoring just 2:01 into the contest converting a pass
from sophomore Marissa Porri (Lynbrook, N.Y.). Koltenback returned the favor at
the 9:33 mark setting up Porri for her 13th goal of the season.
Jamnik, who finished her stellar four-year career, stopped 49 of 52 shots for
the Huskies. Freshman Jacquelyn Parker (Keene, N.H.) made 29 saves for New
England College.
New England College had a 52-31 edge in shots on goal, including a 15-7
margin in the overtime session.

USM's Kerry Leonard Named ECAC East Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Kerry Leonard (Stamford, Conn.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team has been named the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's East Rookie of the

For the season, Leonard leads the Huskies in scoring with 13 goals and 10

Karen Jamnik Named ECAC East Co-Goalie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goalie Karen Jamnik of the University of Southern
Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team has been named the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's East Co-Goalie of the Week for her standout
play during the week of December 8-14. The announcement was made Wednesday
morning by the ECAC office in Centerville, Mass.
Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) shared the weekly honor with Elaine Vonderembse of
the Rochester Institute of Technology. This is the seventh time in her stellar
four-year career that Jamnik has received or shared Goalie of the Week honors.
"It's an honor for Karen to receive this award," commented fourth-year head
coach David Venditti. "She's been playing at a very high level all season. Any
time you make that many saves against a nationally-ranked team, you have to be at
the top of your game. She's one of the top goalies in the league. She is the
backbone of our defense and prove it (against Bowdoin)."
In her only game last week, Jamnik set a school single-game record by making
55 saves in a 3-1 loss against the nationally ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears.
Jamnik was outstanding in the first period when she did not allow a goal despite
the Polar Bears outshooting the Huskies
19-3. Bowdoin did not get a puck past Jamnik until midway through the second
period.
For the season, Jamnik has compiled a 2.38 goals against average with a 92.9
save percentage and a 3-5-1 record.
Southern Maine is 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in ECAC East play at the break for
end of the semester exams and the holidays. The Huskies return to action January
10-11 when they host the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons for a two-game
ECAC East series at the USM Ice Arena.

O'Neil Lead Polar Bears Past Huskies 3-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior Marissa O'Neil (Manchester, N.H.) scored a pair
of goals, including the game winner, as the nationally-ranked Bowdoin College
Polar Bears came from behind to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies
3-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Dayton Arena.
The win stopped a three-game losing skid for the Polar Bears, ranked fifth in
this week's USCHO.com poll, and evened their overall record at 3-3-1. Southern
Maine dropped its third straight to fall to 3-5-1 overall. Bowdoin is now 10-0-1
in 11 meetings against Southern Maine. The two teams will meet again January 27
at USM.
After a scoreless first period in which Bowdoin outshot Southern Maine 19-3,
the Huskies broke on top midway through the second period. Sophomore forward
Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass.) converted a set up from junior Rachael Wollstadt
(Old Town, Maine) and senior Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) for her second goal
of the season at 9:54.
The lead lasted all of 22 seconds as freshman Jayme Woogerd (Seattle, Wash.)
found the back of the net for the second time this season, assisted by freshman
Kate Leonard (Eliot, Maine) and Kate Forney (Gettysburg, Pa.).
O'Neil gave the host Polar Bears the lead for good at 12:09 of the middle
period with an unassisted goal, her third of the season. O'Neil added an
insurance goal midway through the final period off a feed from freshman Meg Gillis
(Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia).
USM senior goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) was brilliant in a losing
effort, making a school single-game record 55 saves. Bowdoin sophomore Cat
MacEachern (Berwick, Nova Scotia) stopped eight of nine shots for the win.

Brennan doubled the advantage at 3:42, and freshman Jennifer Carboni (Cheshire,
Conn.) made it 3-0 at 13:42.
St. Michael's trimmed the deficit to 3-1 on an alert play by freshman Melissa

Southern Maine Holds Off St. Michael's, 2-1 in the Season Opener
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Jessica Lortie's (Cooper City, Fla.) first career
goal proved to be the game winner as the University of Southern Maine Huskies
built a 2-0 advantage and held off a late rally by the St. Michael's College
Purple Knights to post a 2-1 triumph in the season opener for each team on Friday
night at the USM Ice Arena.
Southern Maine will look to complete the weekend sweep and improve its record
to 2-0 when the two sides return to the ice at 4:00 pm tomorrow afternoon.
Leading 1-0 through two periods of play, the Huskies doubled their advantage
just 36 seconds into the third period. Senior captain Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell,
N.J.) collected a loose puck in the outside the crease and wristed a shot off the
near post. The rebound slid through the crease and an alert Lortie slapped it
into the net.
St. Michael's halved the deficit at the 4:02 mark on a beautiful individual
play by junior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass.). After deflecting a clearing pass in
the Southern Maine defensive zone, Lyons outraced USM senior goalie Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) to the puck, and rifled a shot into the vacated net.
The Purple Knights almost equalized late in the period, but a breakaway bid
by freshman Melissa Gagne (Eliot, Maine) hit the post and bounced harmlessly into
the corner.
Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the second period on a face
off deep in the St. Michael's zone. Sophomore center Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass.)
fired a shot off the draw that caught Purple Knights' junior netminder Marcy Ring
(No. Attleboro, Mass.) flat footed.
Southern Maine held a decided 37-10 edge in shots, but Ring came up with 35
saves, while Jamnik made nine stops for the Huskies.

Women's Ice Hockey Captains Named at USM
Huskies Open Season by Hosting St. Michael's Tomorrow and Saturday
GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.) and senior
goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) have been named co-captains of the University
of Southern Maine 2003-'04 women's ice hockey team.
"Karen and Tricia should serve as the ideal captains for this year's team,
and I am extremely confident about their ability to lead us this year," praised
fourth-year head coach David Venditti. "Each has enjoyed their own unique set of
experiences during their career and this should enhance their efforts to motivate
and direct their teammates."
Jamnik and Kamp will serve as the lone seniors on a 26-member roster that
counts 16 freshmen. Despite the team's youth, Coach Venditti is confident the
Huskies possess the necessary talent to improve upon their recent accomplishments.
Southern Maine has won 31 games over the past two years, and compiled a 15-11-1
mark last season. In league play, the Huskies finished fourth in the ECAC East
with a 13-6-1 mark, and advanced to the conference semifinals, where they suffered
a narrow, 2-1 loss to Rensselaer.
"One of the keys to our success this year will be how quickly our freshman
make the transition to the collegiate level," said Venditti. "Karen and Tricia
will be instrumental in this process."
One of the most decorated players in the five-year history of the Southern
Maine women's hockey program, Jamnik enters her final season with a 1.69 goal
against average, and an overall record of 35-22-6, which includes 14 wins via
shutout. During her sophomore campaign, she earned First Team All-ECAC and ECAC
Goalie of the Year honors, and became the first player in program history to
receive All-America recognition when she was selected to the second team. She
maintained her stellar play a year ago, earning Second Team All-ECAC citation.
"Despite her past honors, Karen's greatest asset is her constant desire to
improve," said Venditti. "She is among the hardest working players on our team,
and her competitive drive will inspire our younger players."
Kamp's career has traveled a far different, but equally inspiring route.
Unrecruited, she made the team as a walk-on candidate during her freshman year,
and has spent considerable time during the off-season working on her individual
skills. She has quietly emerged as a reliable offensive contributor, netting five
goals and adding 12 assists to finish fourth on the team in scoring with 17 points
a year ago.
"From a walk-on player to a senior captain really says a great deal about
Tricia's determination and character," praised Venditti. "It also demonstrates the
level of respect that she has earned from her teammates."
Jamnik and Kamp will oversee Southern Maine's progress through a demanding
24-game schedule that includes a full complement of 19 games against their 10
conference foes. In non-league action, the Huskies will be challenged by a pair of
home-and-away series with Bowdoin and Colby, and a date with Division I foe
Quinnipiac.
The Huskies will raise the curtain on the 2003-'04 campaign this weekend,
when they entertain St. Michael's on Friday night (7:00 pm) and Saturday afternoon
(4:00 pm.). Following those two games, the club will close out the first semester
with a seven-game road trip that begins with a pair of games at New England
College (Nov. 14-15). Southern Maine will play non-league games at Quinnipiac
(Nov. 21) and at Colby (Nov. 25), before returning to league competition at
Rensselaer (Dec. 6-7). The Huskies conclude the first semester at Bowdoin (Dec.
10).
The Huskies will ring in the new year with a weekend series against UMass
Boston (Jan. 10-11), before traveling to RIT (Jan. 17-18), and returning home to
face MIT (Jan. 24), Bowdoin (Jan. 27), and Salve Regina (Jan. 31, Feb. 1).
Southern Maine will play consecutive road games at Holy Cross (Feb. 6-7) and
Manhattanville (Feb. 14-15), before closing out the regular season with home games
against Colby (Feb. 17) and Sacred Heart (Feb. 20-21).
