USM's Holly Manning Named Second Team All-American
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies has been named to the American Hockey Coaches
Association's JOFA Division III All-American East second team for the 2002-03
season. The announcement was made by the ACHA Friday afternoon.
Manning is the second USM player to earn All-American honors, following
goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) who was named to the second team last year.
"(Holly) is a very deserving recipient of this award," commented head coach
David Venditti. "She's worked very hard to establish herself as one of the
premier players in the nation. She's been a constant factor in the success of our
program over the past four years."
The school's all-time leading scorer with 123 points on 81 goals and 42
assists, Manning previously was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Division III East Player of the Year and to a spot on the league's first
all-star team. During the 2002-03 season, she scored a school single-season
record tying 25 goals, including three power-play and three game-winning goals,
and had 10 assists for 35 points in 26 games.
Southern Maine finished the season 15-11-1 overall and 13-6-1 in ECAC play.
The Huskies advanced to conference tournament semifinals before losing a heart-
breaking 2-1 decision to Rensselaer.
The JOFA Division III All-American teams are selected by the members of the
American Hockey Coaches Association. Due to the number of the teams regionally,
the coaches have established two East teams and one West team.

game-winning goal on the power play at 13:29 of the third period to lift the
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers to a 2-1 triumph over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in the semifinals of the ECAC East women's hockey
tournament Saturday afternoon at the Playland Ice Arena.
Southern Maine concludes the campaign with an overall record of 15-11-1,

(St. Louis, Mo.).
The game remained deadlocked until Rabatin settled the issue in the third
period. RPI won the game on the strength of its special teams play. The Engineers
were 2-4 on the power play, and held the Huskies to 0-3 on the extra player
advantage.
Schiff finished the game with 27 saves, while Southern Maine junior goalie
Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) turned aside 29 shots.

USM's Manning Named ECAC Div. III Women's East Player of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team has been named the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's East Player of the
Year for the 2002-03 season following voting by the league's 11 head coaches.
Along with being named Player of the Year, Manning also was named to the
first all-star team. Two other Huskies, senior defense Katie True (Chelmsford,
Mass.) and junior goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) were named to the
second all-star team. The announcement of the all-star teams, the all-rookie team
and the four individual awards was made Friday afternoon by the ECAC office on
Cape Cod, Mass.
Manning is the first player in the five-year history of the USM program to
receive Player of the Year honors. This is the second straight year that Manning
and Jamnik have been named to the league all-star teams. Manning was a second
team pick in 2001-02 while Jamnik was named to the first team. This is the first
time that True has earned all-star honors.
"They're all deserving of these awards," commented third-year head coach
David Venditti. "Holly is very deserving of the (Player of the Year) award. She
has been the offensive backbone of our team the past four years, and is a true
hockey player in every sense of the word."
Manning, the team's leading scorer for the fourth consecutive year, has 25
goals and eight assists for 33 points in 24 games. She has three power-play and
three game-winning goals this season, and had three hat tricks. During the 2002-
03 season, she was named the ECAC Division III Women's East Player of the Week on
three occasions.
"Katie's recognition is long overdue. She's not a fancy player and she
doesn't pile up a lot of big offensive numbers, but she's always in the right
place at the right time," said Venditti.
True, the team captain, has six goals, including three game winners, and nine
assists for 15 points in 25 games. The blue liner was recognized as the Co-Player
of the Week in January for her standout play in the Huskies' two-game series
against R.I.T.
Jamnik has been among the league leaders in every statistical category again
this season. The third-year netminder has compiled a 2.38 goals against average
overall with an 89.9 save percentage, a 12-10-1 record and five shutouts.
"Karen has played well throughout the year and is among the best goalies in
the league. She has been the defensive backbone of our team since she arrived (at
USM) two-and-a-half years ago," added Venditti.
Third-seeded Southern Maine (14-10-1) takes the ice Saturday night against
sixth-seeded New England College (7-16-0) in the first round of the ECAC Division
III Women's East tournament. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

USM's Holly Manning Named ECAC East Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team has been selected by
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as its Division III Women's East
Player of the Week for the period of January 27 through February 2. The
announcement was made by the ECAC office Tuesday afternoon.
The Player of the Week citation was the second of the season for Manning, and
the fourth for a USM player. Manning previously won the award for the week of
November 11-17. Senior forward Amy Matuewezski earned the honor in December and
senior defenseman Katie True shared the Player of the Week award in January.
Playing three games in three days, Manning netted five goals and an assist as
the Huskies went 2-1. She had the only goal in the Huskies' 3-1 loss to the
nationally-ranked University of St. Thomas Tommies, then came back the next
evening to collect a goal and an assist in USM's 8-0 win over the Salve Regina
University Seahawks. Manning closed out the week by scoring three times in the
Huskies' 8-3 win Sunday afternoon over the Seahawks. The hat trick was her second
of the season, and the eighth of her career.
With her six-point weekend, Manning solidified her hold on the team scoring
lead. She has 27 points on 20 goals and seven assists in 18 games. Among her 20
goals are three power-play goals and two game-winning goals. Manning reached 20
goals in a season for the second time in her career, and she is the only player to
reach that milestone in the five-year history of the program.
With their two ECAC East wins over Salve Regina, the Huskies are now 10-3-1
in ECAC play (fourth place, 21 points) and 11-7-1 overall. USM will host the
College of the Holy Cross Crusaders in a two-game ECAC East series this Saturday
(7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (3:00 p.m.).

True, Jamnik Capture ECAC Women's East Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior defenseman Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.) and
junior goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) of the University of Southern
Maine women's ice hockey team have been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) for their outstanding play in the Huskies' two-game series
against Rochester Institute of Technology this past weekend.
True was named ECAC Division III East Women's Co-Player of the Week along
with sophomore forward Erin Vehec of Union College while Jamnik was tabbed as the
Goaltender of the Week. The weekly awards were announced late Monday afternoon.
Against the Tigers, ranked 10th nationally last week and in second place in
the ECAC Division III Women's East standings, the Huskies took three of a possible
four points. Southern Maine picked up a point in Saturday's 0-0 overtime tie, the
first scoreless tie in the program's history, then came back 15 hours later to
score twice in the third period to overcome a one-goal deficit for a 2-1 win.
The unheralded True spearheaded the Husky defensive effort that allowed the
Tigers, who came into the series averaging 6.73 goals a game, just one goal on 56
shots, and assisted on both USM goals in the third period of Sunday's win.
Jamnik stopped 55 of 56 shots she faced in 125 minutes of play and allowed
just the one goal. She stopped 28 shots in the 0-0 tie for her 13th career
shutout that established a new school record for career shutouts, and she also
surpassed the 1,000-career save mark. The next day, the 5-foot-6 Rhode Island
native kicked aside 27 of 28 shots to collect the 30th victory of her stellar
career.
On the season, True, the team captain, has five goals and five assists for 10
points in 15 games. She is fourth on the Huskies' scoring list. She has two
game-winning goals and two power-play goals this season.
Jamnik lowered her goals against average to 1.79 for the season and improved
her save percentage to .924. She has an 8-5-1 record and four shutouts.
With the three-point weekend, Southern Maine jumped into fourth place in the
latest ECAC Division III East Women's standings. The Huskies are now 9-5-1
overall and 8-3-1 in league play.
The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday (January 22) when they travel to
Brunswick, Maine, to take on nationally-ranked Bowdoin College in a non-league
game. The opening face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Technology Tigers Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

Southern Maine Blanks New England College, 3-0
GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) scored a goal
and added an assist to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0,
ECAC triumph over the visiting New England College Pilgrims Friday night at the
USM Ice Arena.
Southern Maine improved to 1-2 on the young season, while NEC slipped to 0-3.
The teams return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Southern Maine wasted little time in grabbing the early lead, as freshman
forward Aura Hill (Braintree, Mass.) took a feed from junior Tricia Kamp (West
Caldwell, NJ) off the opening face-off, and whistled a short wrister over the left
shoulder of NEC freshman goalie Jennifer Toof (Berwick, Maine) just 14 seconds
into the game. It stands as a school record for the fastest goal at the start of a
game, breaking the former mark of 21 seconds established by former Husky Heather
Hill against M.I.T. in February of this year.
The Huskies increased their advantage to 2-0 with a powerplay goal early in
the second period. Manning collected a Kamp to Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.)
feed behind the NEC net, and quickly wrapped the puck inside the left-hand post at
3:17.
Senior captain Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.) closed out the scoring at 14:12
of the third period, when she took a pass from Manning and fired a long wrist shot
that found its way between Toof's pads.
Toof turned aside 28 shots for the Pilgrims, while Southern Maine junior
goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) had 18 saves to preserve the shutout for the
Huskies.
