GORHAM, Maine: University of Southern Maine sophomore goalie Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) earned Second Team JOFA/Women's College Division Ice Hockey
All-American honors as selected by the American Hockey Coaches' Association.
Jamnik becomes the first All-American in the four-year history of Southern
Maine women's hockey program at the varsity level. She helped lead the Huskies
to an overall mark of 16-7-4, which stands as single-season school record for
most wins.
The Huskies finished third in the 10-team ECAC Eastern Division, and
proceeded to defeat Salve Regina, 5-1, in the quarterfinal round of the league
tournament. However, the season came to a disappointing conclusion, when the
club suffered a 2-1, overtime loss to Rochester Institute of Technology in the
semifinals.
Jamnik started 24 of the team's 27 contests, and registered a 13-7-4
record with five triumphs via shutout. She turned aside 459 of the 490 shots she

power play.

Molly Duer, Karen Harrison Named to ECAC Honor Roll
GORHAM, Maine: Freshman forward Rachael Wollstadt (Old Town, Maine)
earned ECAC Rookie of the Week Honors to highlight a list of three University of
Southern Maine women's hockey players to receive ECAC recognition after leading
the Huskies to a trio of wins last week.
Senior forward Karen Harrison (Lakewood, Cal.), who registered six assists

pair of shutouts, were each named to the league's weekly honor roll.
Wollstadt tallied four goals and three assists for seven points, as the
Huskies posted consecutive wins over MIT (8-0), Holy Cross (4-1), and Salve

before coming a goal short of her first collegiate hat trick, when she scored a
pair against Holy Cross. Wollstadt added a goal and two assists in the 7-0 win
over Salve Regina to close out the week.
Through five games, Wollstadt leads the team with five goals, while she

been more memorable than her first, when she netted the tying goal with 26
seconds remaining in regulation in the season-opening 2-2 tie at number-three
ranked Manhattanville.
Wollstadt's offensive heroics have helped lead Southern Maine to a 4-0-1
record, the top spot in the ECAC East, and an overall National Ranking of 10th.
Following the tie with Manhattanville, the Huskies have roared to four
consecutive wins, including three by shutout.

Women's Ice Hockey Players Earn ECAC Honors
GORHAM, Maine: Junior forward Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine)
and sophomore goalie Karen Jamnik (Cranston, R.I.) have earned ECAC honors after
helping the Southern Maine women's ice hockey team open the 2001-02 season with
a win and a tie in two road games last weekend.
The Huskies began the year with a 2-2 draw at Manhattanville on Friday
night, and added a 3-0 shutout at Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon. Against
Manhattanville, Southern Maine twice rallied from a one-goal deficit, and tied
the game at 2-2 with only 26 seconds remaining.
Jamnik was named Goaltender of the Week, after turning aside 50 of the 52
shots she faced for a .962 save percentage and a 0.96 goals against average. In
the 3-0 win over Sacred Heart, she made 27 saves to post her fifth career
shutout.
Her performance marked a continuation of her stellar freshman campaign, in
which she started 13 games and saw action in 14. On the year, Jamnik made 279
saves, while yielding just 13 goals for a .955 save percentage and a 1.07 goals
against average. She finished the year with an overall mark of 9-4-1.
While Jamnik anchored the team's defense last weekend, Rideout played a
large role in the team's offense. She factored in all three goals against Sacred
Heart, setting up the eventual game winner at 3:45 of the first period, and
scoring the two insurance goals.
Rideout's strong early showing is reminiscent of her stellar freshman
campaign, in which she tallied seven goals and added 16 assists for 23 points.
As a sophomore, she scored four goals, including three game winners, and set up
seven others for 11 points. Her career totals currently stand at 13 goals and 24
assists for 37 points.
A year ago, Southern Maine posted an overall mark of 15-6-2, and made its
first appearance in the ECAC Tournament, where it suffered a 2-1 opening round
loss to Manhattanville. During one 15-game stretch a year ago, the Huskies
registered a 12-1-2 slate.
Southern Maine will look to continue its early-season success on November
27, when it concludes a three-game season-opening road trip at MIT. The Huskies
will open the home portion of their schedule when they host Holy Cross on
November 30 and Salve Regina on December 1.

Women's Ice Hockey Captains Named at USM
GORHAM, Maine: Senior forward Karen Harrison (Lakewood, Calif.) and
senior defenseman Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine) have been named captains
of the University of Southern Maine 2001-02 women's ice hockey team, while
senior forwards Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) and Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.) will
serve as alternate captains.
"This marks the second consecutive year these four will serve as captains,
and I am excited about the leadership and stability they will provide to our
program," said second-year head coach David Venditti. "We enjoyed a degree of
success last year, and we have essentially the same team returning this year. It
gives me a great deal of confidence to know that our captains are familiar with
their roles, and are well aware of the hard work required to reach our goals."
The quartet highlights a list of 18 returning letterwinners, who will be
joined by five new faces to comprise the 2001-02 edition of Southern Maine
women's ice hockey. The club will look to improve upon a successful 2000-01
campaign, in which the club compiled a league ledger of 13-4-1 and advanced to
the first round of the ECAC Tournament, before finishing with an overall mark of
15-6-2. During one 15-game stretch the Huskies posted an impressive 12-1-2
slate.
Through two games this year, the team is off strong start, rallying for a
2-2 draw at Manhattanville in the season-opener, before blanking Sacred Heart,
3-0.
Fulton set-up the game-tying goal against Manhattanville, and remains one
of the team's top offensive threats. She finished second on the team in scoring
a year ago with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points. As a freshman she
enjoyed her finest offensive season, registering six goals and 26 assists for a
team-leading 32 points. She added four goals and 25 assists as a sophomore, and
her career totals currently stand at 16 goals and 66 assists for 82 points.
"Beth complements her scoring talents with a degree of spirit and
grittyness," said Venditti. "She is equally comfortable finishing off the play
from in front of the net as she is going into the corner to win the battle for
the puck and initiate the play."
A solid two-way player, Fortiguerra has been a mainstay on the team's
defense, while supplying timely scoring. She scored a pair of game-winning goals
last year and set up the first goal in the team's 3-0 win at Sacred Heart
earlier this year. Her career totals now stand at 13 goals and 23 assists for 36
points, and she has helped the team blank 20 foes during her time on the
blueline.
"Breanne is enrolled in a five-year program of study, and this will be her
fifth year with the team and her fifth year as a captain," said Venditti.
"During her freshman year our program played at the club level, and she has been
instrumental in helping us making the transition to a competitive Division III
outfit."
Harrison, who has been a consistent offensive contributor throughout her
first three years, has additionally seen time on the special teams. She scored a
pair of power play goals as a freshman and added a shorthanded goal a year ago.
She registered 16 points in each of her first two seasons, and her career totals
stand a 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points
"Karen is a level-headed student-athlete, who's maturity has helped guide
our program through its early years of varsity existence," said Venditti
Hill commenced the 2001-02 season by scoring the team's first goal in the
2-2 draw at Manhattanville. During her sophomore campaign, she netted a pair of
hat tricks and added four assists to finish with 17 points. Overall, she has
scored 25 goals and added 10 assists for 35 points.
"Heather epitomizes our entire program," said Venditti. "Through her work
ethic and dedication, she has developed into a solid all-around player."
Fulton, Fortiguerra, Harrison and Hill will lead the club on a challenging
25-game, regular-season schedule, which includes 12 home dates and a full slate
of 18 ECAC East league contests. The Huskies will close out their current three-
game season-opening road trip at MIT (7:30) on Nov. 30.
Southern Maine will host Holy Cross (7:00) on Nov. 30; and Salve Regina
(4:00) on Dec. 1; before travelling to RIT (5:30) on Dec. 8; and Union (2:00) on
Dec. 9.
The month of January will consist of games on Jan. 5, St. Michael's
(7:00); Jan. 6, Rensselaer (3:00); Jan. 8, Wesleyan (4:30); Jan. 12, at Williams
(7:30); Jan. 13, at Amherst (3:00); Jan. 15, Bowdoin (7:00); Jan. 19, Union
(7:00); Jan. 20 RIT (1:00); Jan, 22, at Colby (7:00); Jan. 26, at Slave Regina
(4:30); Jan. 27, at Holy Cross (2:00); and Jan. 29, Colby (7:00).
Southern Maine will close out the regular season with games on Feb. 1,
Sacred Heart (7:00); Feb. 2, Manhattanville (4:00); Feb. 6, at Bowdoin (7:00);
Feb. 9, MIT (7:00); Feb. 15, at Rensselaer (7:00); and Feb. 16, at St. Michael's
(3:00).
The postseason will feature the ECAC Tournament, which includes first-
round games over the weekend of Feb. 23-25. The top four teams will advance to
the semifinals and finals, over the weekend of March 1-2 at the site of the
highest remaining seed.

Rideout, Jamnik Lead Huskies Past Pioneers 3-0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Junior Courtney Rideout (South Portland, Maine)
scored a pair of goals and set up a third, and sophomore goalie Karen Jamnik
(Cranston, R.I.) kicked out 27 shots, as the University of Southern Maine
Huskies defeated the Sacred Heart University Pioneers 3-0 in an ECAC Division
III Women's East game Sunday afternoon.
The win gave the Huskies (1-0-1) three of a possible four points in the
standings for their two-game, season-opening road trip. USM tied Manhattanville
College, 2-2, in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Saturday. Sacred Heart lost for the
first time this season after posting three straight wins.
Rideout led the Huskies' three-goal first period outburst that proved to
be more than enough. She and senior defenseman Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman,
Maine) combined to set up junior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, Vt.) for a
power play goal at 3:45 of the period. It was Manning's first goal of the
season.
Ten minutes later, Rideout netted the first of her two goals, unassisted,
by putting a shot past Pioneer sophomore goalie Taryn Catania (Moonackie, N.J.).
Rideout closed out the scoring at 18:26, converting a pass from junior
defenseman Katie True (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Jamnik, last year's ECAC Division III Women's League All-Rookie team
goalie, picked right up where she left off last season. She stopped all 27
Pioneer shots she faced to collect her first shutout of the season, and the
fifth of her career. During the two weekend games, she stopped 50 of 52 shots.
Catania made 30 saves for the Pioneers.
The Huskies return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel
to Cambridge, Mass., to play the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on
November 27. Sacred Heart will be back in action on December 1 when they travel
to Middlebury College for a non-conference game.
