Brandeis Comes From Behind to Defeat Southern Maine 74-71
UNION, New Jersey -- Senior guard Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.Y./Old
Bridge) scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Brandeis University Judges to a
74-71, come-from-behind win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday
evening in a first round game of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball
Championship at Harwood Arena on the campus of Kean University in Union, N.J.
With the loss, Southern Maine concludes its season with a 25-4 overall
record. The Judges improve to 19-7 overall and will face the winner of the Kean
University/Utica College game in the second round of the 2008 Division III
Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
Capra scored 19 of her game-high 25 in the second half as the Judges, who
trailed by as many as 15 points, rallied for the victory. Freshman forward
Amber Strodthoff (DePere, Wis.) finished as the only other Brandeis player in
double figures with 13 points off of the bench. Senior guard Kierstan Holgash
(Easton, Pa.) added nine points a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore guard
Lauren Rashford (Whitesboro, N.Y.) added eight points and five rebounds.
Southern Maine junior forward Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown
Academy) and senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy)
combined to score 42 points to pace the Huskies. Kent finished with a team-high
22 points and five rebounds while Santa Fe tossed in 20 points and grabbed a
game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston,
Maine/Gardiner) added nine points and two blocked shots off of the bench, while
senior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester)
chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
In the first half, both teams shot the ball extremely well with Southern
Maine sneaking out a narrow, 38-37 lead at the break. The Huskies shot 53.8
percent (14-for-26) from the field and a scorching 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from
three-point range, including four from Kent and three from Santa Fe. The Judges
made 12-of-25 of its shots from the floor (48.0 percent) and were bolstered by a
7-for-9 effort from the free throw line.
In the second half, Southern Maine was clicking on both sides of the ball
and took a 15-point (61-46) on a three-pointer from senior guard Dawn Ross
(Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). Both teams exchanged baskets over the next
two minutes and the Huskies held a 14-point (65-51) advantage following a lay-up
by Kent with 6:51 to play.
Kent's lay-up however was the last field goal the Huskies would make for
the next 3:31 as the Judges, led by Capra, began their comeback bid. Following
Kent's lay-up, Brandeis scored 12 unanswered points, including seven by Capra on
a three-pointer, a steal and a lay-up and a pair of free throws. Capra's free
throws pulled the Judges to within two points of USM (65-63) with 3:20 to play.
Dixon finally ended USM's scoring drought sinking a pair of free-throws
with 2:32 to play to put the Huskies up by four (67-63). However, Capra again
responded for the Judges scoring five consecutive points on a lay-up and a
three-pointer from the left wing to put her team ahead 68-67 with 1:56 to play.
Brandeis continued to add to its lead on the free throw line taking a four-
point advantage (71-67) on 1-of-2 free throws from Capra and a pair from
Strodthoff with 45 seconds to play. Southern Maine outscored the Judges 4-1
over the next 25 seconds on a lay-up from Santa Fe and two free throws from Kent
to pull within one, 72-71 with 19 seconds on the clock. But Strodthoff sank two
more free throws on Brandeis' next possession to give the Judges a three-point
lead 74-71. Both teams missed shots in the final seconds of the game and USM
was unable to get off a shot in its final possession.
Brandeis outscored the Huskies 23-6 in the final 6:51 to pull out the win.
Southern Maine connected on just two its final eight field goals and committed
six turnovers in the final seven minutes.
Southern Maine finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the
floor and 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from three-point range, but was at a large
disadvantage on the charity stripe. Despite shooting 90.9 percent (10-for-11)
from the free throw line, the Huskies only shot 11 free throws compared to 30 by
the Judges. Brandeis, which connected on 21 of its 30 free throws (70.0
percent) finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field (21-for-50).

Eastern Connecticut Edges Southern Maine 65-60 in OT
Warriors Capture First Little East Conference Title Since 1996
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior guard Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn./Canton) scored
a game-high 21 points, sinking 11-for-13 free throws, including 5-of-6 in
overtime, to lead the second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University
Warriors to a 65-60 overtime win over the top-seeded University of Southern
Maine Huskies in the championship game of the 2008 Little East Conference
Women's Basketball Championship Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium
in Gorham.
With the win, Eastern Connecticut improves to 24-4 overall and earns the
automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. It is the first trip to the NCAA
tournament for the Warriors since the 2002-2003 season when they earned an at-
large bid. The Warriors last won the LEC tournament in 1996 when they defeated
the Huskies 56-53.
The loss snaps the Huskies' string of 11 consecutive LEC tournament crowns
and drops their record to 25-3 overall. The Huskies will now have to wait the
announcement of the NCAA at-large bids late Sunday night. Southern Maine has
participated in the NCAA tournament 21 times since moving to the NCAA from the
NAIA in 1985, including the last 13 years in a row.
Eastern Connecticut was clutch from the free throw line, outscoring USM 9-4
in the overtime period. The Warriors sank 9-of-10 chances from the charity
stripe, including 4-for-5 by Morey. The Huskies struggled from the floor in the
overtime period connecting on just 1-of-9 from the field.
Morey's 21 points led three Eastern Connecticut players in double digits.
Freshman guard Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, Conn.) scored 15 points on an
outstanding 5-for-7 effort from the field and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds,
and junior center Ashley McFetridge (Canton, Conn.) added 14 points, eight
rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and three steals. McFetridge was named
the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Southern Maine junior forward Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown
Academy) and senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy)
each had 13 points to lead the Huskies. Kent added a team-high eight rebounds
and a pair of assists. Sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner)
scored 11 points off of the bench for USM, while senior forward Shannon Kynoch
(South Burlington, Vt.) chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and two
blocked shots.
Trailing by five (49-44) with 7:29 to play, Southern Maine strung together
a 7-2 run to knot the score at 51-51 with 4:40 to play. Kent sank a pair of
free throws to key the run and was followed by an offensive rebound and a lay-up
from Dixon to leave the Huskies trailing by a point (49-48). McFetridge, who
was 6-for-11 from the field, drained a tough, turnaround jumper to interrupt the
Huskies run, but sophomore guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, Maine) knocked down
a three-pointer from the baseline to tie the score for the third time in the
half and the sixth time in the game.
The teams' post players traded points over the next two minutes. Southern
Maine's Kynoch made a pair of tough interior moves, while McFetridge tossed in a
jumper and sank two free throws as the score remained in deadlock, 55-55, with
2:33 to play. Southern Maine took a one-point lead on a Dixon free throw with
1:15 to play, but the Warriors' Moriarty was able to match Dixon at the charity
stripe with 1:01 to play for the sixth tie score of the game (56-56). Both teams
misfired on three-point attempts in their final possessions of regulation to
send the game into overtime.
Both teams were scoreless in the first 1:21 of the overtime before
Moriarity put the Warriors on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws.
Moriarty's free throws were the only points of the overtime until senior center
Bridgette Durette (Seymour, Conn.) gave the Warriors a 60-56 cushion with a pair
of free throws with 1:33 to play. Southern Maine earned its first point of the
overtime on the second of two free throw attempts from Dixon, but Morey pushed
the Eastern Connecticut advantage to five (62-57) sinking the first of her five
overtime free throws.
The Huskies cut the Eastern Connecticut lead to three twice in the final
1:15 of overtime on scores from Kent, but Morey sank her final two free throws
with 10 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach for Southern Maine.
Eastern Connecticut finished the game shooting a solid 40.8 percent (20-
for-49) from the field and was nearly automatic from the free throw line sinking
21 of 25 attempts (84 percent). Southern Maine shot 33.3 percent (20-for-60)
from the field and 88.2 percent (15-for-17) from the charity stripe.

Balanced Huskies Down Keene State 55-34, Advances to LEC Championship
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown
Academy) scored a game-high 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, passed off three
assists and had five steals to lead the nationally-ranked University of Southern
Maine Huskies to a 55-34 victory over the Keene State College Owls in the second
semifinal game of the 2008 Little East Conference women's basketball tournament
Friday night at the Warren Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.
With the win, the top seeded Huskies improve to 25-2 overall and advance to
the LEC championship game against the Eastern Connecticut State University
Warriors on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). The second-seeded Warriors defeated third-
seeded Western Connecticut State University
58-46 earlier in the evening. Keene State, the fourth seed in the tournament
ends its season with a 16-11 record.
Senior guard Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) joined Kent in
double-figures notching all 11 of her points in the first half, including
connecting on a trio of three-pointers. Ross added six rebounds and a pair of
assists. Senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) chipped
in with nine points. Senior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester,
Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston,
Maine/Gardiner) added six and five points respectively while each grabbed eight
rebounds off of the bench.
Senior guard Danielle Graveley (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) was the only
Keene State player in double-figures netting 10 points on a 5-for-12 effort from
the field. Sophomore forward Nicole Simmler (Oxford, Mass.) added eight points
and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Kristin Degou (Newburyport, Mass.)
chipped in with seven points.
Neither team shot the ball well in the opening five minutes of the game
combining for a frigid 1-for-15 mark from the field. The Huskies took a 5-3
lead when Dixon scored Southern Maine's first field goal with 14:15 on the
clock. Following Dixon's layup the Huskies scored five straight points on a
pair of free throws from Kent and a three-pointer from Ross to lead the Owls by
seven (10-3) with 11:16 to play.
Both teams battled back and forth over the next seven minutes and Keene
State cut the USM lead to five (15-10) on a three-pointer from Degou with 6:59
on the clock. Southern Maine responded down the stretch outscoring the Owls 13-
6 to close out the half and lead 28-16 at the break. Ross scored eight of the
Huskies final 13 points in the half, knocking down a pair of three pointers and
making two free throws.
The Owls scored the first two points of the second half on a lay-up by
Simmler, but it was the only two points the Owls would score in the first 9:12
of the second stanza as USM turned up its defensive pressure. Southern Maine
pulled away from the Owls during that stretch scoring 14 unanswered points to
open up a commanding 42-18 lead with 11:48 to play. The Huskies received
scoring contributions from five different players in the run, including four
points from Kent.
Simmler snapped the Owls' scoreless drought making a lay-up after a steal
with 11:46 to play, but USM used a 7-2 mini-run on two free throws from Dixon, a
lay-up from Kent and a traditional three-point play from Danieli to grab its
largest lead of the game (49-22) with 7:44 remaining. From there the Owls never
got closer than 19 points (53-34) with 1:12 to play as the Huskies cruised to
the win.
Southern Maine shot just 34.7 percent (17-for-49) from the field, while
Keene State made 26.0 percent (13-for-50). The Huskies held a huge rebounding
advantage, 47-26, including 17 offensive boards.

Eastern Conn. Downs Western Conn. 58-46
Warriors Advance to Little East Conference Championship Game
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Ashley McFetridge (Canton, Conn.) scored a game-
high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the second-seeded Eastern
Connecticut State University Warriors to a 58-46 victory over the third-seeded
Western Connecticut State University Colonials in the first semi-final game of
the 2008 Little East Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament being
played at the Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of
Southern Maine.
The win was the seventh straight for the Warriors who improve to 23-4 on
the season. The Warriors move into the championship game on Saturday (4:00
p.m.) and will play the winner of the second semi-final game between top-seeded
Southern Maine and fourth-seeded Keene State College. The Colonials finish the
season 20-6.
McFetridge scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half to help Eastern
Connecticut edge out to a 27-23 lead at halftime. The 6-foot-2 center was
perfect in the opening 20 minutes converting all four of her shots from the
floor and all six free throws.
The first half was nip and tuck befitting two teams that split their two-
game regular season series. There were six lead changes and 10 ties in the half
before the Warriors went out in front to stay. Two free throws by EC junior
Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn./Windham) snapped the last tie with 1:01 to go in
the half, and Morey added a layup in the final seconds for the four-point
advantage.
Western Connecticut stayed within striking distance over the first 10
minutes of the second half getting as close as one (34-33) on a three-pointer
from junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) with 12:36 to go.
Two free throws and a basket by EC senior Bridget Durette (Seymour, Conn.)
ignited an 8-0 run that expanded the lead from five (42-37) to 13 (50-37) with
5:57 remaining. The Colonials missed five straight shots before rookie Karli
Spera (Waterford, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to jump start a 7-0 run. That
spurt got the Colonials back within six (50-44) with 3:22 to play.
Down the stretch, the Warriors converted 6-of-12 free throws and mixed in a
layup from freshman Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, Conn.) while the Colonials
could only counter with a basket from standout senior guard Ally Greenwood (East
Hartford, Conn.).
For Eastern Connecticut, Morey finished with 10 points while Moriarty
contributed eight points (all in the second half) and grabbed a game-high 11
rebounds. Durette and senior Stephanie Smith (Penacook, N.H./Merrimack Valley)
each had eight points.
On the other side of the ledger, Greenwood was the lone Colonial to reach
double figures finishing with 13 points. She also handed out a game-high seven
assists.
The Warriors made 38 percent (16 of 42) of their shots from the floor, but
had a big edge at the charity stripe, converting 26 of 39 tries. The Colonials
connected on just 33 percent (19 of 58) of their shots from the floor and went
to the line just eight times.

Southern Maine Downs UMass Dartmouth 79-31
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown Academy)
scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the top-seeded
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 79-31 victory over the eighth-seeded
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in a first round game of the 2008
Little East Conference women's basketball tournament Tuesday night at the Warren
Hill Gymnasium.
The win propels the Huskies into a semi-final match up with fourth-seeded
Keene State College, a 58-46 winner over fifth-seeded Rhode Island College, on
Friday. The Huskies are now 24-2 on the season. The Corsairs, who dropped
their fourth straight game, finish the season 6-20.
Kent, a 5-foot-10 small forward, connected on 6-of-9 shots from the field,
including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc, and 3-of-4 from the line for
her 17 points. Senior Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt.) also finished the
game in double figures with 12 points as all 13 USM players dressed contributed
points to the offense.
Kent and Kynoch combined for 23 points in the first half as the Huskies,
despite shooting only 38 percent and committing 17 turnovers, opened up a 35-12
lead by the break. The Corsairs shot a frigid 11 percent (4 for 35) in the
opening 20 minutes.
Southern Maine scored the first 12 points of the game to take early
command. Kent had the first eight points before senior Josalee Danieli (New
Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) dropped in a couple of baskets to make it
12-0 less than six minutes into the contest.
UMD finally got on the board when freshman Tara Driscoll (Swampscott,
Mass.) drained a long three-point shot with 12:37 to play in the half. USM
responded with the next six points to make it 18-3 at the mid-point in the half.
UMD got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Any thoughts of a Corsair comeback in the second half were quickly dashed
as the Huskies scored the first 13 points to open a 48-12 advantage with 16:32
to play. Kent and senior Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) each
had four points in the run.
Southern Maine, which shot 54 percent in the second half (13 for 24),
finished the game with a 45 percent shooting mark (24 for 53) and a huge 59-22
edge on the boards. Sophomore Kristen Arsenault (Rumford, Maine/Mountain
Valley) led USM with eight rebounds.
UMD was led by senior Ashley Chard (Burlington, Conn./St. Paul) with seven
points. Freshman Kristen Penney (West Roxbury, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and

Southern Maine Edges Western Connecticut, 56-54
Huskies Clinch Top Seed and 20th LEC Regular Season Title
DANBURY, Conn. -- Sophomore forward Becky Dixon (Pittston, Maine/Gard-
iner) scored on a lay-up with 16 seconds remaining to lift the nationally-ranked
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team to a 56-54 Little
East Conference win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials
Saturday at Feldman Arena in Danbury, Conn.
Earning their fourth straight win, the Huskies conclude the regular season
with a 23-2 overall record and a 13-1 mark in the Little East. The Huskies
clinched the Little East Conference regular season crown and earn the top seed
in the upcoming LEC tournament. The Colonials fall to 19-5 overall and 11-3 in
the conference.
Since the inception of the conference in 1986-1987, Southern Maine has won
or shared 20 of 22 regular season championships. The win also marked Southern
Maine's 250th regular season LEC win. Since 1986-1987, Southern Maine has
posted a 250-22 record against its conference foes.
Senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and junior
forward Stacey Kent (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown Academy) combined to scored 25 of
the Huskies 56 points, notching 13 and 12 points respectively. Senior forward
Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) added eight points and
six rebounds, while Dixon finished with seven points and seven rebounds off of
the bench. Sophomore guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, Maine) chipped in with
five points, five assists and a career and game-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore forward Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.) scored a game-high 23
points on 9-for-14 shooting to lead the Colonials off of the bench. Senior
guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn./Cromwell) added nine points, seven
assists, six rebounds and three steals in a solid all-around effort and freshman
center Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) chipped in with eight rebounds and five
rebounds.
Trailing by eight (47-39) with 5:15 remaining in the game, Western
Connecticut mounted a comeback bid rattling off an 11-2 run to pull ahead 50-49
with 1:47 to play. Western Connecticut scored five quick points on a jumper
from junior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn./Windham) and the second of
two three-pointers from Moffo.
Southern Maine freshman Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) interrupted the
Colonials' spurt with a mid-range jumper, but the Colonials fired off the next
six points straight, including four points from Moffo. Moffo's two free throws
with 1:47 on the clock gave Western Connecticut its first lead of the game.
Kent returned the lead to the Huskies converting a lay-up, but Moffo scored
her sixth straight point of the game on a lay-up following an assist from
Greenwood with 1:17 to play to put the Colonials back on top. Southern Maine's
Paradis responded scoring her only points of the half, draining a long three-
pointer with 58 seconds remaining to put the Huskies ahead by two, 54-52.
Moffo tied the score with a lay-up on the Colonials next possession with 47
seconds to play, but Dixon was able to come up with game-winning basket grabbing
an offensive rebound and sinking the lay-up on the left side of the basket with
14 seconds to play. Moffo fired off a potential game-winning three-point
attempt with seconds to play, but it fell short and Paradis secured the rebound
as the Huskies held on for the win.
Southern Maine, the top seed in the LEC tournament, will host the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday (5:30
p.m.). Western Connecticut, the three-seed, will host sixth-seeded Plymouth
State University on the same date at a time to be determined. The semifinals
and finals will be hosted by the highest remaining seed following Tuesday's
games on Friday and Saturday (February 29 and March 1).

over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's basketball
game Tuesday night at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The win was the third straight for the 12th-ranked Huskies who improve to
22-2 overall and 12-1 in the conference. The win also clinched at least a share
of the LEC regular season title for the Huskies, and the top seed in the
upcoming LEC tournament that starts next week. The Huskies have won or shared
the LEC regular season title 20 times in the 22-year history of the conference.
The Panthers fall to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in the conference.

committed 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

pair of free throws to push the Huskies’ lead back up to 10 (64-54) with one
