In the opener, the Huskies rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning, and added four insurance runs in the eighth en route to the 7-2 victory. Freshman southpaw Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) picked up his third win of the season with relief help from senior Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec). In the sixth inning, junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on an infield error to tie the game. Senior Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) singled home senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) who reached second on the infield error. The Huskies took advantage of another infield error in the eighth. Senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) scored on an infield throwing error. Skeffington scored the second run of the inning on a bases loaded wild pitch. Sophomore Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) drove in the third run with a single to left, and advanced to third on another throwing error. He scored on a single by senior Pat Kinslow (Westbrook, Maine). UMD took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham), who had singled, scored on an infield error. USM matched the run in its half on a double by senior Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) and two ground outs. The Corsairs grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third on a one-out triple by freshman Joe Albano (Agawan, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) and a sacrifice fly from junior Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, Mass./Case). Senior pitcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, Mass./David Prouty), a late replacement in the starting lineup, protected the lead into the sixth. Maclean, who was tagged with his third loss of the season, went 7.2 innings allowing eight hits and three walks while fanning five. Four of the seven runs he was charged with were unearned. In the nightcap, freshman left-hander Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine) combined with Foley and Therrian to post a five-hit shutout. Schmidt, who evened his record at 2-2, worked the first 7.0 innings giving up five hits and one walk. He struck out five. Foley and Therrian each pitched one inning. Both of Schmidt's wins this season have come in combined shutouts. USM scored in the first when Henry was hit by a pitch, moved to third on the first of three singles by Bourque and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arsenault. The Huskies added three in the sixth on an RBI single by Arsenault, an RBI fielder's choice from senior Jordan Yanni (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and an infield throwing error. The final run came in the eighth on a two-out RBI double by sophomore Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering). Wheaton Routs Southern Maine 11-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Louie Bernardini (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Glouces- ter) scattered five hits over eight innings and struck out six as the Wheaton College Lyons defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 11-1 in a non- conference baseball game Friday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium. The win was the seventh straight for the Lyons, and the 300th in the history of the 10-year program and for head coach Eric Podbelski (300-120-4). The Lyons, who swept the season series from the Huskies, are now 30-10 overall. The Lyons defeated the Huskies 2-1 back on April 1. The Huskies dropped their second straight game, and sixth in the last eight, to slip to 23-13 overall. Bernardini, who retired the first 14 batters he faced, kept the Huskies off balance over the first eight innings on the way to his seventh win of the season against no losses. The only run he allowed, coming in the eighth inning, was unearned. Freshman Jon Shepard (Salisbury, Mass./Triton Regional) pitched a perfect ninth inning in relief, fanning the last two batters on six pitches. With Bernardini keeping the Huskies off the base paths, the Lyons took a 1-0 lead in the third as senior Travis Anthoine (Portland, Maine) singled, stole second and came home on a single by sophomore Nick Pecora (Highland Park, N.J./Immaculata). The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth on RBI singles from senior Jeff Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Karl Olson (Bethel, Maine/Gould Academy) and a squeeze bunt from Anthoine. Junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, Mass./Nauset Regional) had an RBI single and Martin walked with the bases loaded in fifth inning to expand the lead to 6-0. Bernardini finally surrendered a hit in the fifth when junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) lined the first pitch he saw into center field. The Huskies would load the bases before Bernardini got a ground ball to get out of the inning. Wheaton senior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) had a pair of two-run doubles in the final two innings to turn the game into a rout. Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Little East Conference doubleheader. Babson Blanks Southern Maine 2-0
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Ryan Campbell (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) celebrated his final collegiate home game with three hits and the game-winning RBI as the Babson College Beavers defeated the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-0 in a non-conference baseball game at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Jeff Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal), sophomore Chris LeGrow (North Andover, Mass.), and freshman Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) combined on the five-hit shutout for the Beavers, who improved to 24-13 with the win. The Huskies fell to 23-12 with the loss, despite a strong pitching performance from junior Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland). Wojnar and Ross matched zeros through the first six and a half innings before Babson finally snapped the scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, junior Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass./Newton South) singled down the left field line and stole second. Following a walk to sophomore Andrew Spevacek (Shorewood, Minn./Breck School), Campbell drilled the first pitch he saw to the base of the wall in deep center, scoring Delaney with the game's first run. On the play, USM cut down Spevacek at the plate for the inning's second out, allowing Campbell to take third. Campbell then trotted home to make it 2-0 on a clutch two-out single through the right side by freshman Jake Bartlett (Weymouth, Mass./B.C. High). That would prove to be the only scoring of the ball game, as both teams pitched extremely well. Wojnar (5-3) went seven-plus innings for Babson, scattering four hits, three walks, and a hit batter while striking out eight. He then gave way to LeGrow, who pitched out of a jam in the eighth and got the first two outs of the ninth before giving up a single to Southern Maine freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.). That prompted the call for Ahern, who got the final batter to foul out to Campbell at first. The save was the rookie's sixth of the year, tying the school's single-season record held by Dave DiGangi '94 and Jason Kosow '04. Ross (4-1) also went seven innings in his first defeat of the season, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, walking four, hitting a batter, and striking out three. The junior righthander escaped numerous jams through the first six frames, despite six errors behind him during that span. The two runs scored against Ross were the first since April 21, a span of 20.2 innings. Senior captain Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) pitched a perfect eighth for the Huskies, fanning one. Campbell went 3-for-4 with a double, and run scored, and an RBI for the Beavers, while Delaney added two hits and a run in three at-bats. Southern Maine will host Wheaton College on Friday (4:00 p.m.) in a non- conference game. Babson will play a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) at Tufts University. Southern Maine Defeats UMaine 13-7
SANFORD, Maine -- Senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) had three hits and two RBI to lead a 15-hit attack as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the University of Maine Black Bears 13-7 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine. The Huskies, who had lost four of their previous five games, improve to 23-11 overall. The Black Bears dropped their second straight game, and fifth in their last six, to slide to 14-25. The game was the first meeting between the two teams since 1999. Bourque snapped a 2-2 tie with his two-run double to deep center field during the Huskies' four-run fifth inning. He also had a single during the Huskies' six-run seventh inning uprising. Bourque's first inning single extended his current hitting streak to 11 games. The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a one-out double by sophomore Kevin McEvoy (Brewer, Maine) and a two-out RBI single by sophomore Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.). The Huskies grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth on senior Joe McGhee's (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) RBI double into the left-center field gap and an RBI single from senior Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) that plated McGhee. UMaine tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by senior Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) before USM came up with four in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good. Bourque drove in the first two runs with his double off McEvoy, the fourth of seven Black Bear hurlers. Sophomore Mike Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) came on in relief of McEvoy and looked like he might escape further damage, but sophomore Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) stroked a two-out double to left-center that scored Bourque and senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) who had walked. Freshman Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) slammed a two-run homer, his third of the season, in the sixth to pull UMaine back within two at 6-4. In the seventh inning, Southern Maine took advantage of five hits and two UMaine errors to scored six runs, only one earned, to take a 12-4 lead. The Black Bears got three unearned runs back in the eighth as the Huskies committed two errors. Senior Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) had a double in the inning, the 58th of his career, to move into a tie for second place on the all- time doubles list at UMaine. Freshman Evan Gray (Sanford, Maine), the third of seven pitchers for Southern Maine, picked up his second win of the season against no defeats. Arsenault, McGhee, and Ganley each had two hits for USM. McEvoy took the loss for the Black Bears to slip to 0-3 on the season. McGraw, Barrett, and McEvoy had two hits apiece. Bowdoin Downs Southern Maine 5-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Freshman pitcher Joe Pace (Newburyport, Mass.) scattered seven hits and four walks in a complete game effort to give the Bowdoin College Polar Bears a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon. The win was the fifth in a row for the Polar Bears, and lifts their record to 17-12 overall. The Huskies suffered their fourth loss in their last five game to slip to 22-11 overall. Pace got out of a big jam in the first inning when sophomore outfielder Jason Koperniak (Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) threw out a USM runner at the plate to end the inning. Pace got stronger as the game progressed, not allowing a runner past second base the rest of the way. USM put two runners aboard via walks in the seventh, but Pace got out of the inning on a fly ball. With the win, Pace lifts his record to 4-2 on the season. Southern Maine got one run in the first on an RBI single by senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine), but the lead was short-lived. The Polar Bears came back in their half of the inning to plate a run on an RBI single by junior Patrick Duchette (Wales, Maine/Oak Hill). Bowdoin took the lead for good against USM rookie starter Brady Blackman (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic’s) in the fourth inning on a two-run single by senior Mike Buckley (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook). Adam Ross Named LEC Co-Pitcher of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior pitcher Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named Co- Pitcher of the Week by the Little East Conference for his outstanding efforts during the week of April 23-29. Ross shared the weekly honor with sophomore Shawn Gilblair of Eastern Connecticut State University. Ross made two appearances last week compiling a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA. He hurled 12.0 innings allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six. This is the first time in his career that Ross has been honored with an LEC weekly citation. Against St. Joseph's College on Thursday, Ross authored a 3-0 shutout of the Monks allowing five hits and no walks. He fanned three, and induced 22 ground ball outs during the game, enough that freshman first baseman Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) set a school single-game record with 21 putouts. Only two St. Joe's runners advanced as far as third base during the game. The complete game shutout was the first by a USM pitcher since Tip Fairchild blanked Eastern Connecticut State University on April 15, 2005. Ross came on in relief in the second game of a doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts Boston on Sunday and contributed three shutout innings in an eventual 6-5 USM victory in 12 innings. He allowed just one hits and one walk while striking out three. On the season, the 6-foot-2 right-hander has compiled a 4-0 record with a 3.38 ERA. Ross has pitched 37.1 innings, third most on the staff, allowing 39 hits and five walks while registering 22 strikeouts. Southern Maine, 22-10 overall and 6-6 in the Little East Conference, will travel to Bowdoin College on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game. ################################################################################ Sunday, April 29, 2007
Southern Maine, UMass Boston Split Doubleheader
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) delivered a two- out single in the bottom of the 12th inning to score sophomore pinch runner Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) from third base as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at the USM Baseball Stadium. In the first game, the Beacons used the complete game pitching effort of senior left-hander Jamie Soto (Peabody, Mass.) and a five-run uprising in the seventh inning to defeat the Huskies 10-4. The first game of the twinbill was a Little East Conference game while the nightcap was a non-conference tilt. With the win in the second game, the Huskies snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 22-10 overall. The Huskies are 6-6 in conference play. The Beacons are now 14-16 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Arsenault came to the plate after sophomore Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) reached on an infield throwing error. After pinch runner Jeff Skillin (Portland, Maine/Deering) stole second, Arsenault lined a 1-2 pitch down the right field line to bring in Pike with the winning run. The Huskies got to extra innings when senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) hit a three-run homer in the seventh to wipe out a 5-2 UMB lead. The loss spoiled a big game for the Beacons senior shortstop, Bryan Curran (Brockton, Mass.), who had five hits, including three doubles and a solo home run, and two RBI. Senior right-hander Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.), the third USM pitcher, picked up his sixth win of the season with three innings of scoreless relief. Foley left the bases loaded in the 11th and two on in the 12th. Sophomore Anthony Lauretto (Pembroke, Mass.) was the tough luck loser surrendering the one unearned run in 4.2 innings of work. In the opening game, Soto hurled his second complete game victory over the Huskies in eight days. He defeated USM a week ago 5-3. This time, he went the route allowing 11 hits, four runs, and four walks while striking out four. Both of Soto's wins this season have come against the Huskies. UMB put two runs up on the board in the first on Soto's RBI ground out and an infield throwing error. USM came right back in its half of the inning when Bourque hit a three-run homer. The Beacons took the lead for good in the second on a two-run single from senior Sean Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) and a double steal. The Beacons iced the game with five runs in the seventh inning. Freshman Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, Fla.) drove in the first two runs with a double, sophomore Chris Oram (Lynn, Mass.) plated a run with a single, and sophomore Ryan Oshima (La Jolla, Calif.) brought in Rodriguez and Oram with a double. Ross, Huskies Shut Out St. Joseph's 3-0
STANDISH, Maine -- Junior Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland) pitched a five-hit shutout Thursday as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the St. Joseph's College Monks 3-0 in a non-conference game at Mahaney Diamond in Standish. The win was the fourth straight, and 12th in the last 13 games, for the Huskies who improve to 21-7 overall. The Huskies swept all three games between the two teams this spring. The Monks drop to 25-6 overall. Ross was brilliant in earning his first collegiate shutout. The 6-foot-2 right-hander did not walk a batter and had the Monks hitting the ball on the ground, getting 22 groundball outs. Ross struck out three in his masterpiece. The complete game shutout was the first by a USM pitcher since Tip Fairchild blanked Eastern Connecticut State University, 8-0, on April 15, 2005. The Monks got a runner as far as third base only twice in the game. Junior Dustin Spiller (Gorham, Maine) doubled with one out in fourth inning and advanced to third on a ground out, but Ross left him stranded there getting another ground out. In the fifth, an infield error put senior Chris Doughty (Windham, Maine) on to lead off. A sacrifice bunt and a ground out moved Doughty to third, but Ross induced another ground out to end the threat. Ross would retire 11 straight Monks after Doughty reached on the error. The Huskies' offense, which had produced 49 runs in the previous three games this week, was limited to five hits by four St. Joseph's hurlers. The Huskies manufactured the only run Ross would need in the fifth off losing pitcher Kyle Dorr (Berwick, Maine/Noble) on a lead off double by freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.), an infield error and a sacrifice fly from junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.). Sophomore Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) added a one-out solo home run in the sixth inning off Andrew Keirstead (Westbrook, Maine) to increase the lead to 2-0. Burleson would score the final run in the ninth when he scored from first on a double by senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine). Southern Maine Downs Bates in Slugfest 19-13
LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 26-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team outlasted the Bates College Bobcats to post a 19-13 victory Tuesday at Leahey Field in a hit-fest for both teams. The win was the second straight, and 10th in the last 11 games, for the Huskies who are now 19-7 on the season. The Bobcats dropped their third straight game to fall to 3-15 overall. Bates (3-15) collected 19 hits off of four Huskies pitchers, one shy of the Bobcats' season high total, while the Huskies rapped out 18 hits against five Bobcat pitchers, including home runs by senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine), his team-high fifth, and sophomore Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering), his first. USM took leads of 5-1 and 11-6, but Bates wouldn't go away. The Bobcats scored in five straight innings, and answered the Huskies' four-run sixth inning with four of their own in the sixth to close the gap to 11-10, where the score stayed until the eighth. The Huskies plated three runs in the eighth and added five more in the ninth to put the game away. Huskies junior reliever Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine) earned the win, allowing one run over 1.1 innings, to raise his record to 3-0. Stacy ran into trouble starting the eighth, as Bates loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning. Senior reliever Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) came on to induce a run-scoring double play and an inning-ending groundout. Foley allowed the Bobcats two more runs in the ninth, but earned his third save this season. USM junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and Stacy each drove home four runs for the Huskies, while Stacy, freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.), senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) and freshman Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine) all collected three hits, including two doubles for Arsenault. Bates juniors Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.), who was 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs, and Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.), who was 4-for-5 with two runs and a home run, his second of the year, led the hit parade for Bates. Freshman Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine/Deering) went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Southern Maine Holds Off Colby 11-9
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine had a season-high 18 hits to build a seven-run lead, then had to survive a ninth-inning rally by the Colby College Mules to hold on for an 11-9 victory Monday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium in Gorham. The win was the ninth in the last 10 games for the Huskies who improve to 18-7 overall. The Mules, who had their three-game winning streak stopped, slip to 6-15 overall. The Huskies scored runs in each of the first six innings to build a 10-3 lead, and held an 11-4 advantage going into the final inning before the Mules strung together six hits for a five-run rally that brought the tying run to the plate. Southern Maine plated two in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) and a double play, and added an unearned run in the second. Burleson and freshman Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the third, and sophomore Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) added an RBI single during the three-run inning. Colby's only offense against USM freshman starting pitcher Brady Blackman (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic's) came in the third when sophomore Kyle McKay (Bedford, N.H./Loomis Chaffee) launched a two-run homer down the left field line. The Huskies added a single run in the fourth, two unearned markers in the fifth and a single tally in the sixth to offset a single run for the Mules in the sixth to lead 10-3. The teams traded runs in the eighth. In the ninth, Colby got an RBI triple from senior Steve Sandak (Stamford, Conn./King Low-Heywood), RBI singles from freshman pinch-hitter Michael Cuqua (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, Conn./St. Luke's School), and a two-run triple from sophomore Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn./Hopkins School) to get the tying run to the plate. Sophomore Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine), the last of five Huskies hurlers, was able to get the final out on a ground ball to preserve Blackman's second win of the season. Blackman went 6.0 innings giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out two. Senior Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) and Henry led the Southern Maine hitting assault against three Colby pitchers with three hits apiece. Burleson, Gaffney and senior Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) each had two hits. Cooper paced Colby's 16-hit attack with a triple and two singles. Freshman Corey Martin (Winslow, Maine) and senior Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla./Cambridge School) had two hits. Sophomore left-hander Robert Tourek (Wexford, Penn./Shadyside Academy), who pitched into the fifth, was tagged with the loss. Soto Leads UMass Boston Past Southern Maine 5-3
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior left-handed pitcher Jaime Soto (Peabody, Mass.) scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs in a complete game victory, while collecting three hits and knocking in a pair of runs to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team over visiting University of Southern Maine, 5-3, Sunday in a Little East Conference game at Yetten Field in Waltham, Mass. The Beacons improve to 11-13 overall and 2-7 in LEC play, while the Huskies, who are ranked fourth in the New England region, fall to 17-7 and 6-3. The loss snapped the Huskies' eight-game winning streak. Soto threw nine innings, while walking four and striking out seven to improve to 2-3 on the season. UMass Boston led for the first six innings of the contest until Southern Maine senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) smacked a one-out single to right field, moved to third on a single to center field by senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) and scored on a single to left-center field by sophomore starting pitcher Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) to knot the game at 3-3. The Beacons answered in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Chris Oram (Lynn, Mass.) doubled to center field and came around to score on a single to left field by freshman Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, Fla.) to give them a 4-3 edge, a lead they would not relinquish. UMass Boston added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when senior Sean Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) took first base after being hit with a pitch for the second time on the day with one out, and Soto followed with a booming shot to left center field to score Ketterer to make it 5-3. Soto was thrown out at third in a bid for his second triple of the season. The Beacons wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Senior Bob Kniffen (Halifax, Mass.) tattooed the first pitch he saw up the middle for a single and was later followed by a walk issued to senior Bryan Curran (Brockton, Mass.) and Ketterer being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Soto took advantage with a single that found its way into right field to bring home Kniffen. Junior third baseman Mike Dorval (Belchertown, Mass.) forced in the second run after being issued a bases on balls. The Huskies cut the deficit in half in the third inning when freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) stroked a two-out single to right field and Bourque followed with a run-scoring double to right field to pull them to within 2-1. UMass Boston countered in the bottom of the inning when Soto led off with a single to left field, moved to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI single to left center field by freshman first baseman Mike Andriano (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give the Beacons a 3-1 margin. Southern Maine made it a one-run game again in the fourth when Arsenault cracked a leadoff single to left field and freshman Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Following a strikeout, junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) beat out a double-play ball as Arsenault scampered home to make it 3-2, before the Huskies tied it in the sixth. Soto finished his day going 3-4 with a double and two runs batted in and a run scored at the plate for the Beacons, while Andriano and Rodriguez each went 2-4 with an RBI. Kniffen also collected two hits for UMB. Mackey, Bourque, Arsenault and Henry all came up with two hits for Southern Maine, with Bourque knocking in a run and scoring once. Burleson took the loss for the Huskies going seven innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits and five walks, while fanning two batters. UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, April 24, when it travels to Quincy, Mass., to take on Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m., while Southern Maine hosts Colby College on Monday, April 23, at 4:00 p.m. At Waltham, Mass. 123 456 789 R H E Southern Maine (17-7; 6-3) 001 101 000 3 10 1 UMass Boston (11-13; 2-7) 201 001 10X 5 10 0 Batteries: SM, Chris Burleson, Pat Foley (7), Tim Therrian (8) and Max Arsenault, Jordan Yanni (3). Southern Maine Sweeps Plymouth State, 6-2 and 11-8
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior shortstop Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) had six hits, scored four runs and drove in three to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies sweep a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from the Plymouth State University Panthers by scores of 6-2 and 11-8 Saturday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium. The sweep extends the Huskies' winning streak to eight games, and improves their record to 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Panthers have dropped their last three games to slide to 8-15 overall and 3-6 in the conference. Vardaro had four hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple, and two RBI in the first game to support the strong starting pitching of junior Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland). In the second game, Vardaro added two hits, scored three times and knocked in one to help USM battle back from a 5-1 deficit. In the opener, PSU took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) hit a two-out home run to right field off of Ross. The Huskies responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Sophomore Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Vardaro, who had doubled, and senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region), on board via an error, both scored on an error to make it 3-1. Vardaro extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI double. The Huskies added a single tally in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy). Senior Craig Carpenter (Holderness, N.H.) chopped one run off the deficit for PSU in the sixth with a solo homer to center. USM added an insurance run in the eighth on Vardaro's RBI triple. Ross went 7.2 innings allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five to pick up his third win of the season. Sophomore Taylor Ketchum (Fairhaven, Mass.) went the distance for PSU, giving up 12 hits and two walks. He fanned three. In the nightcap, PSU grabbed a 5-1 lead in the third inning against USM senior starter Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine) and Stacy. The Panthers took advantage of three hits, a hit batsman and four walks to score five times. Carpenter delivered the first run with an RBI single off of Armandi. Sophomore Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) greeted Stacy with an RBI single, and senior Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with a sacrifice fly. Stacy issued back-to- back bases-loaded walks to sophomore Josh Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Jared LeClaire (Portsmouth, N.H./Winnacunnet) to force in the final two runs. The Huskies came right back to score four and tie the score. Arsenault had an RBI single to plate the first run. Burleson scored the second run on a wild pitch. Freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) had an RBI single and sophomore Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Southern Maine took control of the game in the sixth inning scoring six runs. Three straight pinch hitters reached base before Vardaro lined a singled to left to score one. Burleson walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-5. Senior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) delivered a two-run single, and Arsenault followed with a sac fly. The final run scored on an infield error. The Panthers got one in the seventh, and two in the eighth to make things interesting, but a base running gaff in ninth put the damper on a potential rally. Stacy picked up the win with 4.0 innings of relief work. Senior Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) picked up his second save of the season. Junior Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.), the second of five PSU hurlers, was saddled with the loss. Southern Maine Blanks St. Joseph's 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine) and Brady Blackman (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic's) combined on a four-hitter as the University of Southern Maine Huskies shut out the St. Joseph's College Monks 9-0 Friday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium. The win gave the Huskies a sweep the teams' two-day, home-and-home series, and extends their winning streak to six games. The Huskies downed the Monks 8-7 at St. Joseph's Thursday. The Huskies are now 15-6 overall. The Monks, who have lost two straight for the first time this season, slip to 20-4 overall. The two squads will play one more time during the regular season next Thursday (5:00 pm.) at St. Joseph's. Schmidt was brilliant over the first 7.2 innings allowing just four hits and four walks while striking out eight to earn his first collegiate win. Blackman allowed only one base runner over the final 1.1 innings to preserve the Huskies' first shutout of the season. The Huskies gave their rookie southpaw starter an early cushion to work with scoring one in the first and five times in the second inning. Senior Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) led off the USM first with a single, and moved to second on a walk to sophomore Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering). After a strikeout, senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Regional) delivered Vardaro with a single through the right side. USM used the long ball in a five-run second inning to chase St. Joseph's freshman starter, and losing pitcher, Chris Leger (Jaffrey, N.H.) from the hill. Junior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) drove in the first two runs with a double. Burleson brought in the next two with his second home run of the season. Arsenault finished Leger's day with his third homer of the season, a solo shot to left. St. Joseph's junior reliever Ryan Boucher (Manchester, N.H.) cooled the USM bats until the sixth after relieving Leger. USM added three insurance runs in the sixth on a fielder's choice and a two-run single by Arsenault. Arsenault was the game's lone repeat hitter, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Burleson and Skeffington each had two RBI. Southern Maine will host Plymouth State University for a Little East Conference doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies who improve to 14-6 overall. The Monks had their five-game winning streak stopped and slip to 20-3 overall. The two teams meet again Friday (3:30 p.m.) at the USM Baseball Stadium in the back half of the home-and-home series. Junior Luke Enman (Milton, N.H.) drove in two runs with a double down the right field line, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. An infield error on junior Andrew Wood's (South Portland, Maine) ground ball put the tying run on base, but USM sophomore reliever Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) was able to get the final out to pick up his fifth save of the season. St. Joseph's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Wood's RBI single. After the Huskies tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double by sophomore Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering), the Monks regained the lead in their half of the inning scoring three. Senior Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had an RBI single to bring in the first run. The second run scored on a wild pitch, and the third crossed the plate on an error.
