Wheaton Downs Southern Maine 16-5 to Win Regional Title
HARWICH, Mass. -- Sophomore Scott Guillerault (South Portland, Maine)
went 4 for 4 with six RBI as the Wheaton College Lyons defeated the University
of Southern Maine Huskies 16-5 in the championship round of the 2006 NCAA
Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament Saturday afternoon at
Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
With the win, the top-seeded Lyons claimed the regional championship and
advance to their first-ever NCAA Division III College World Series in the nine-
year history of the program. Winning their third consecutive game of the
tournament, and 31 of its last 33 games, the Lyons raised their record to 38-8.
The 38 wins set a school record for wins in a season.
Making their 16th appearance in the NCAA tournament, the loss concludes the
Huskies’ season with a 32-17 record. The Huskies’ 32 wins are the most by a USM
team since the 2001 season when the Huskies finished with a 37-14 record. The
Huskies were trying to come through the losers’ bracket after dropping the
opening game of the tournament to Salem State College.
Wheaton pounded out 17 hits against the beleaguered Huskies pitching staff,
including three home runs, and got a strong relief pitching effort from
sophomore left-hander Josh Moore (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) to earn the win.
Moore entered the game in relief of sophomore starter Louie Bernardini
(Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) in the second inning. Moore allowed three
runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk in 5.2 innings of work to pick up
his seventh win of the season. Moore fanned four.
The Huskies struck first scoring two runs in the opening inning on a two-
run single to right field by junior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine). Bourque’s
single drove in freshman Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) and junior
Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.).
Wheaton came back in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for
good, combining four hits and a hit batter into four runs. Junior Brandon
Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch leading off, stole second, and
scored on a single to left field by senior Andy Koocher (Portland, Maine).
Wheaton moved ahead on the first Guillerault’s four hits as he launched a wind-
blown, two-run homer to left field. Wheaton added a final run in the inning on
a single to left field by senior Mark Baumer (Durham, Maine/Greely).
The Lyons added three more runs in the third inning. The Lyons got a two-
run homer from junior Adam Laplante (Harwich, Mass.) and solo home run to center
field by sophomore Pat O’Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) to
make it 7-2.
Southern Maine took one run back in the top of the fifth following a lead
off home run from Burleson. Wheaton answered in the bottom of the inning with
four more runs, including a two-run double from Leonard. Wheaton put the game
away with five runs in the sixth to make it 16-3.
Bourque finished the game with three hits and two RBI, while Burleson had
two hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Both were named to the all-tournament
team.
Southern Maine senior starter Brett Rogers (Orr’s Island, Maine/Mt.
Ararat), the first of seven USM hurlers, took the loss.

Southern Maine Downs Western New England College 6-3
Huskies Advance to the Championship Round Against Wheaton
HARWICH, Mass. -- Sophomore right-hander Adam Ross (Spruce Head,
Maine/Rockland) scattered four hits and two walks over seven innings to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 victory over the Western New
England College Golden Bears Friday night in Game 11 of the 2006 NCAA Division
III New England Regional tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich,
Mass.
The win vaults the Huskies (32-16) into the championship round against
Wheaton College on Saturday. The Huskies need to defeat Wheaton twice to take
the regional title and advance to the Division III National Finals in Appleton,
Wisconsin. Wheaton, unbeaten in the tournament, advanced to the championship
round with a 6-0 win over Western New England College (35-12) in the first of
three games Friday. Southern Maine defeated Middlebury College 12-10 in the
second game.
Winners of their last three games since losing the tournament’s opening
game to Salem State College, the Huskies will try to duplicate the 2001 team’s
feat by winning the regional title coming back through the losers’ bracket after
dropping its first game. Wheaton, the tournament’s top seed, swept Southern
Maine in a doubleheader back on April 23.
Ross, who did not get out of the first inning in his last start, gave the
Huskies a huge lift pitching into the eighth inning. Gave up an unearned run in
the sixth and was charged with two more unearned runs in the eighth before
departing. Freshman Josh Connors (Winthrop, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and junior
Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) combined to get the final six outs and preserve the
win for Ross.
With Ross and junior Eric Smolin (Westford, Mass.) locked in a scoreless
pitching dual until the Golden Bears parlayed a single and two USM errors into
the game’s first run. Freshman Chris Newell led off the sixth with a single,
advanced to third on a one-out infield error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
senior Jason Connelly (Scituate, Mass.).
Southern Maine came right back in its half of the inning to take the lead
for good. The first USM run came home on an infield error that allowed junior
Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) to score. Junior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine)
followed with an RBI single to make it 2-1. The final two runs scored on the
second infield error of the inning.
The Golden Bears pulled to within one in the top of the eighth inning,
capitalizing on back-to-back infield errors to plate two unearned runs. Junior
Garrison Ward (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), who reached on an error, scored the first
run of the inning on an RBI single by Connelly that finished Ross’s night and
brought in Connors. Junior Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex), who
reached on a second error, crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from sophomore
SS Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).
Southern Maine answered right with two insurance runs in the bottom half of
the inning. With two outs, senior pinch-hitter Brent Lemieux (Cumberland,
Maine/Greely) slapped a double to right-center field. Junior Jordan Yanni
(Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) drove in Lemieux with an RBI single. After a
stolen base, Yanni came around to score on a RBI double from junior Joe Ganley
(Keene, N.H./Keene).
Smolin pitched very well through the first five innings, allowing only
three hits and two walks. The Huskies caught up to him in the sixth for three
hits and the costly first error before junior Eric Blanchard (Worcester,
Mass./Doherty) came on and was the victim of the second error.

NCAA Regional Tournament
Southern Maine Outlasts Middlebury 12-10 to Stay Alive
HARWICH, Mass. -- Junior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) and sophomore
Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) combined for five hits and eight RBI to lead
the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 12-10 win over the
third-seeded Middlebury College Panthers Friday in Game 10 of the 2006 NCAA
Division III New England Regional Championship at Whitehouse Field in Harwich,
Mass.
With its second straight win, Southern Maine improves to 31-16 and advances
to Game 11 of the regional to face sixth-seed Western New England College Friday
evening. Western New England College fell to Wheaton 6-0 earlier today. The
winner of the Southern Maine-WNEC game will advance to Saturday’s championship
round to face Wheaton.
With the loss, Middlebury is eliminated from the tournament and concluded
its season with a 26-11 record. It was the first-ever NCAA tournament
appearance for the Panthers.
With the game knotted up at 8-8 in the eighth inning, Skeffington drilled a
two-run triple to center field, and scored on a throwing error on the play.
Skeffington’s triple plated junior Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) who singled and
freshman Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) who walked. Junior Jordan
Yanni (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) added an RBI single to give the Huskies
a 12-8 lead.
The Panthers plated two runs on a triple from Armstrong and three
consecutive singles from sophomore John Lanahan (Jacksonville, Fla.), senior Joe
Ramoin (Nederland, Texas) and senior Noah Walker (Oakland, Calif.) to make it
12-10. USM freshman right-hander Josh Connors (Winthrop, Mass.) entered the
game with two outs and runners on first and second. Connors ended the threat
making a nice play on a soft grounder up the first-base line.
Southern Maine trailed 8-5 in the sixth inning when Bourque laced a game-
tying, three-run home run over the left field fence to plate Ganley and
Burleson. Bourque finished the game with three hits in five at bats and four
RBI.
Despite jumping out to an early 4-0 lead in the first two innings, Southern
Maine found itself trailing 8-4 as the Middlebury bats came alive in the bottom
of the third to take a 5-4 lead. Senior Alex Casnocha (San Francisco, Calif.)
ignited the Panther rally lining a leadoff homer to left field. The Panthers
took their first lead on a two-run double from Lanahan.
The Panthers increased their lead to 8-4 by adding a run in the fourth and
two more in the fifth. Middlebury connected on four hits in the fifth inning,
including an RBI single from Casnocha. Casnocha had three hits in five trips to
the plate and two RBI, while Lanahan finished with four hits and three RBI.
Senior Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) earned the win for the Huskies in relief.
Foley (5-0) entered the game in the sixth inning and gave up two runs on two
hits in two innings of work. Connors, who struck out two batters in the ninth,
did not allow a base runner in 1.1 innings of work to earn his third save of the
season.
Middlebury sophomore reliever Christian Hansen (Laramie, Wyo.) took the
loss for the Panthers. Hansen gave up six runs on eight hits and a walk in five
innings of work

Huskies Stay Alive, Down St. Joseph’s 10-1
HARWICH, Mass. -- Freshman right-hander Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering) scattered seven hits and two walks, struck out a season-high 13
and helped his own cause with a two-run home run in leading the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 10-1 victory over the St. Joseph’s College Monks
Thursday night in an elimination game in the 2006 NCAA Division III New England
Regional Baseball Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
The win snapped the Huskies’ three-game losing streak and moves them into
another elimination game (Game 10) Friday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) against
Middlebury College. The Huskies improve to 30-16 on the season. Middlebury
stayed alive beating Bowdoin College 10-8 in the first game of the day, and
Salem State College 14-4.
St. Joseph’s, which lost a heart-breaking 11-10 decision to Western New
England College in 10 innings earlier in the day, finishes its best-ever season
34-10-1.
Burleson was masterful throughout the game displaying an outstanding
curveball that had the Monks off balance at the plate. Burleson fanned the last
five batters he faced on the way to a season-high 13 strikeouts and his first
complete game. The win was his sixth of the season against one loss.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by
sophomore Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.).
The Monks evened the score in the third inning on a lead-off triple by
senior Jake Rodden (Somersworth, N.H.) who later scored on an infield throwing
error.
Southern Maine took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on
an RBI single by junior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) that scored Burleson from
second base.
Junior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) ignited a five-run uprising in the
fourth inning with a solo homer to lead off. Burleson capped off the inning
with his two-run shot over the fence in left field to make it 7-1.
The Huskies picked up two runs in the fifth and a single tally in the
eighth. Burleson picked up his third RBI of the game in the fifth when he
walked with the bases loaded, and scored the USM run in the eighth on Bourque’s
third hit of the game.
Bourque had three singles and a pair of RBI to pace the Huskies’ 13-hit
attack. Burleson was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Skeffington, Arsenault, and freshmen Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) and
Jeff Skillin (Portland, Maine/Deering) each had two hits.
Freshman Wade Oliver (Owls Head, Maine/Rockland) and junior Mark Clapp
(Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens Academy) each had two hits for the Monks.
Junior left-hander Ben Cutter (Westbrook, Maine), the first of four pitchers
used by St. Joe’s, took the loss.

Salem State Downs Southern Maine 8-5 in NCAA Regional Play
HARWICH, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Addessa (Revere, Mass.) knocked out a
two-run homer as part of a four-run eighth inning as the fourth-seeded Salem
State College Vikings outlasted the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine
Huskies 8-5 in the first game of the 2006 NCAA Division III New England Regional
Tournament Wednesday morning at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
With its first-ever NCAA tournament win, Salem State improves to 34-6 and
will play top-seeded Wheaton College in Game Four of the regional tonight at
8:00 p.m. Suffering their third consecutive loss, the Southern Maine drops to
29-16. Southern Maine will face an opponent to be determine in an elimination
game Thursday (May 18) at 8:00 p.m.
Trailing throughout the first seven innings, the Huskies went ahead 5-4 in
the top of the eighth on a two-run home run to right field by junior Ryan
Bourque (Sanford, Maine). Bourque’s home run scored sophomore Eddie Skeffington
(Everett, Mass.) who reached safely on an infield single to start the inning.
The Vikings came back in the bottom of the inning, however, to seal the
win. Sophomore Rob Celentano (Peabody, Mass.) reached on a bloop single to
right field and moved to second on a walk to sophomore Ryan Laffin (Norwell,
Mass.). Celentano and Laffin scored on a two-run double to center field from
senior Jason Sablone (Malden, Mass.) to put the Vikings up 6-5. The Vikings
added a pair of insurance runs on Addessa’s second home run of the season.
The Huskies threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one
out on a pinch-hit single from senior Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine), a walk
to junior Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) and a single by Skeffington, but Salem
State sophomore closer Scott Lynch (Malden, Mass.) got the final two outs to end
the USM rally.
Salem State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, tagging USM
junior starter Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.) for three runs on a walk, a hit
batter and three hits, including a home run to left field from Celentano and a
double from senior Derek Lyons (Danvers, Mass.)
Lynch (5-0) earned his fifth win of the season giving up three hits and one
walk in 1.2 innings of relief work. USM freshman Josh Connors (Winthrop, Mass.)
took the loss for the Huskies. Connors (4-1) gave up three runs on two hit and
two walks in 1.1 innings.

Eastern Conn. Downs Southern Maine 5-4
ORONO, Maine -- The Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors jumped
out to an early 5-0 lead, then hung on for a 5-4 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in an elimination game of the 2006 Little East Conference
Baseball Tournament Saturday night. The game was played at Mahaney Diamond in
Orono, Maine, after bad weather forced the tournament to be moved from the
Southern Maine.
Eastern Connecticut, 27-17, advances to Sunday's championship round needing
two wins against Keene State College to capture its fifth LEC title and an
automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Earlier in
the day, Eastern Conn. defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-3,
in another elimination game at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Maine, to stay
alive.
Southern Maine, which dropped a 14-4 decision to Keene State earlier, will
have to wait to Sunday night or Monday morning to hear if it is awarded an at-
large berth in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies are 29-15.
The first six games of the six-team, double-elimination tournament were
played Wednesday and Thursday at Southern Maine, located in Gorham, Maine, but
the bad weather postponed the three games scheduled for Friday.
The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Greg
Sullivan (Needham, Mass.), who had three hits in the game, tripled to center
field and came home on an RBI single by senior Marc Garofalo (South Kingstown,
R.I.). Junior Randy Re (Danbury, Conn.), who had his fourth multiple hit game
of the tourney, singled to chase USM starter Adam Ross (Spruce Harbor, Maine)
after just three batters.
Senior Chris DeSantis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) brought home the second run with
a ground out. Freshman Shawn Gilblair (Windham, Conn.) doubled home Re, and
after a wild pitch moved Gilblair to third, sophomore Zach Thomas (East Haddam,
Conn.) singled Gilblair home.
Eastern Conn. picked up what proved to be the decisive run in the fourth on
a sacrifice fly by Re to go up 5-0.
The Huskies, looking to stave off elimination, clawed their way back into
the game with a single run in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Junior
Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) brought in the Huskies' first run with an RBI
single.
In the eighth, the Huskies took advantage of some sloppy Eastern Conn.
defense. Two infield errors sandwiched around a balk produced a run. A single
by freshman Stefan Black (West Gardiner, Maine) and the third Warriors' error of
the inning made it 5-3. With the bases loaded and two out, junior Ryan Bourque
(Sanford, Maine) delivered a single to center field that scored senior pinch
hitter Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine), but Re threw out the potential tying
run at the plate to preserve the Warriors' lead.
Garofalo, Re, and Thomas each had two hits in the game. Freshman right-
hander Jimmy Jagodzinski (Greenwich, Conn.) pitched six shutout innings,
allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out six to pick up his second
win of the season. Junior Justin Davis (Lisbon, Conn.) pitched the final three
innings to earn a save.
Vardaro, Bourque, and freshman Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) had
two hits apiece for the Huskies. Ross was tagged with his third loss of the
season.

including a double and home run, and five RBI to lead the Keene State College
Owls to a 14-4 thumping of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a winners
bracket game of the 2006 Little East Conference Baseball Tournament Saturday.
The game was played at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine, after bad weather
forced the tournament to be moved from the Southern Maine. Keene State, 31-12,
advances to Sunday's championship round needing one win to capture its first LEC
title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Southern Maine, 29-14, faces Eastern Connecticut State University, 26-17,

Eastern Conn. defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-3, in an
elimination game Saturday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Maine, to stay alive.

Keene State twice on Sunday to win the tournament.
The first six games of the six-team, double-elimination tournament were
played Wednesday and Thursday at Southern Maine, located in Gorham, Maine, but
the bad weather postponed the three games scheduled for Friday.
The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead against USM senior starter Brett Rogers
(Orr's Island, Maine/Mt. Ararat) in the first inning. Arroyo had a bases loaded
double that chased home three runs and knocked Rogers from the game. Arroyo
smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
Keene State picked up a single run in the second on an RBI single by
freshman James Chevalier (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan), and three unearned runs in
the third inning on a two-run double by freshman Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton,
N.H./Goffstown) and an RBI triple by Chevalier to lead 8-0.
Sophomore pitcher Phil Mabey (Williamstown, Mass./Mt. Greylock) kept
Southern Maine in check until tiring in the eighth. Mabey worked 7.1 innings
allowing five hits and six walks while fanning six to earn his third win of the
season.
Perkins, Chevalier, junior John Grainger (Keene, N.H.) and sophomore Joe
Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) all had two hits for the Owls.

Burleson played an instrumental role in the Huskies winning four out of
five games last week to finish the regular season 27-13 overall and 11-3 in the
conference. Burleson picked up a win on the mound and batted .412 (7-for-17)
with three runs scored and four RBI.
Against St. Joseph's College, the right-handed hurler picked up his fourth
win of the season against one loss by going seven innings, allowing just three
hits and two walks while striking out 10 in a 13-2 victory. Both runs charged
to him were unearned.
In the Huskies' 4-3, come-from-behind win against Babson College, Burleson
drove in the first two USM runs with a two-out single in the seventh inning.
Over the weekend, Burleson went 6-for-10, including four hits in the first
game, in the Huskies conference doubleheader sweep of the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth. He scored three runs and had two RBI in the two games.
The two wins gave the Huskies a share of the LEC regular season title and the
right to host this week's championship tournament that begins Wednesday morning
at the USM Baseball Stadium on the Gorham campus.
On the season, Burleson is 4-1 on the mound with a 3.15 ERA. He has worked
34.1 innings allowing 36 hits and 14 walks while striking out 37. At the plate,
he is batting .305 (40-for-131) with 38 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples,
two home runs and 25 RBI. He leads the team with 10 stolen bases.
The Huskies will host the 2006 Little East Conference Baseball Championship
Tournament, a six-team, double-elimination affair, starting Wednesday morning.
The top-seeded Huskies will play sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth (9-25; 5-9) in the
opening game at 9:00 a.m., followed by second-seeded Keene State College (28-12;
11-3) playing fifth-seeded UMass Boston (19-15; 7-7) at 12:00 p.m. The final
game of the day pits third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University (24-16;
8-6) against fourth-seeded, and defending tournament champion, Rhode Island
College (20-18; 8-6) at 3:00 p.m.
The tournament continues with three games on Thursday and Friday

Southern Maine Sweeps UMass Dartmouth 11-6 and 7-2
Huskies to Host Little East Conference Tournament
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior southpaw Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.)
and senior right-hander Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine/Mt. Ararat) provided
the University of Southern Maine Huskies with two strong starting pitching
performances en route to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Corsairs by scores of 11-6 and 7-2 in Little East Conference baseball
action Saturday afternoon at the UMD Athletic Complex.
With the two wins, the Huskies earned a share of the LEC regular season
title (along with Keene State College) and the right to host next week's
championship tournament. The Huskies are 27-13 overall and finished the
conference regular season schedule at 11-3. UMass Dartmouth fell to 9-25
overall and 5-9 in the conference. Despite the two losses, the Corsairs will
advance to the six-team, double-elimination conference tournament that is
scheduled to start Wednesday morning.
Bergeron hurled seven shutout innings in the opening game, allowing six
hits and one walk while fanning seven. Rogers nearly duplicated that effort in
the nightcap going six innings, allowing one run on four hits and five walks.
He struck out six. Both pitchers evened their records at 3-3.
Senior Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) came on to get the final two outs in the
opener, and pitched three innings of one-run, one-hit relief in the second game
to earn his second save of the season.
The Huskies' offense came alive Saturday pounding out 29 hits. Freshman
Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) had six hits, including four in the
first game. Junior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) and freshmen Stefan Black
(West Gardiner, Maine) and Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) each had four
hits in the twinbill.
In the opener, the Huskies scored in every inning from the second through
the seven to build an 11-0 lead. Black got the Huskies on the board with a two-
run single in the second. Arsenault drove in a pair of runs with a single in
the third. Burleson's RBI single in the fourth made it 5-0. Stowell and junior
Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) had RBI hits in the fifth.
UMD made things interesting with a single run in the eighth and five in the
ninth before Foley extinguished the rally with a double play ball. Sophomores
Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, Mass./Case) and Kevin Raudonaitis (Dartmouth, Mass.) and
freshman Dave McGuire (Plainville, Mass./King Phillip Regional) led the Corsairs
with three hits apiece. Junior pitcher Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old
Rochester) took the loss to fall to 4-4.
In the nightcap, the teams were tied 1-1 after four innings. The Huskies
scored a pair of runs in the fifth on consecutive doubles by junior Ryan Bourque
(Sanford, Maine), sophomore Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and Arsenault,
and two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Black and freshman Mike
D'Andrea (Portland, Maine/Deering).
UMD cut the lead to 5-2 on a solo home run by Zygmont (the only hit off
Foley) in the eighth. USM put up a couple of insurance runs in the ninth on a
passed ball and an infield error to account for the 7-2 final.
Zygmont and freshman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham)
had two hits each in the second game for the Corsairs. Senior pitcher Lee
Marques (Fall River, Mass./Diman Regional) took the loss to fall to 1-4.
Pairings and game times for the upcoming Little East Conference tournament
will be announced.

Southern Maine Rallies Late, Downs Babson 4-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman pinch-runner Mike D'Andrea (Portland,
Maine/Deering) scored from third base on a double steal attempt in the eighth
inning to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies rally from a three-run
deficit and post a 4-3 victory over the Babson College Beavers in a non-
conference college baseball game Thursday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improved to 25-12
overall. The Beavers dropped their second straight to fall to 18-16 overall.
Trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning, Southern Maine finally reached Babson
senior left-hander Tom Fitzgerald (Scituate, Mass./B.C. High) for a pair of runs
on a two-out, two-run single by freshman Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering). Sophomore right-hander Sam Whelan (Milton, Mass.) came on to
relieve Fitzgerald and got the Beavers out of further trouble.
In the eighth, junior Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) stroked
a two-out RBI single to tie the game. D'Andrea, running for McGhee, advanced to
third on a single by freshman Jeff Skillin (Portland, Maine/Deering). On a
double steal attempt, Skillin got in a rundown between first and second long
enough for D'Andrea to scamper home with the winning run.
USM freshman right-hander Josh Connors (Winthrop, Mass./Catholic Memorial)
came on in relief after rookie lefthander Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg
Academy) gave up a leadoff single in the ninth and nailed down his second save
of the season.
Babson grabbed a 3-0 lead scoring all of its runs in the fourth inning.
Junior Billy Lucas (Acworth, Ga./Lovett) drove in a pair of runs with a double
over the center fielder's head. Lucas later scored the third run on a two-out
infield error.
Stacy, who came on in relief in the fourth inning, picked up his third win
of the season hurling 4.1 innings of one-hit shutout baseball. Whelan was
tagged with his first loss of the season.
Lucas and senior Andrew Collins (South Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) each had
two hits for Babson. Skillin and junior Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) each had two
singles for the Huskies.

Arsenault Powers Huskies By St. Joseph's 13-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) banged out five
hits, including a grand slam home run, and had five RBI to lead the University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 13-2 victory over the St. Joseph's College Monks
in a non-conference college baseball game Monday afternoon at the USM Baseball
Stadium.
The win lifts the Huskies, ranked fifth in this week's NECBC poll, to 24-
12. The Monks, ranked seventh in the NECBC poll, dip to 30-8-1. The Huskies
won the season series with Monks 2-1 by taking the final two games.
Scoreless into the fourth inning, the Huskies exploded for five runs
against St. Joseph's sophomore left-handers Steven Stout (Gloucester, Mass.) and
Charlie Furbush (South Portland, Maine). An infield error and a double by
freshman Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) put runners at second and third.
Stout intentionally walked freshman Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) to
load the bases and bring on Furbush from the bullpen.
Furbush struck out the first batter he faced, then walked junior Jordan
Yanni (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) to force in the game's first run. A
wild pitch allowed Stowell to score before Furbush hit junior Nick Vardaro
(Norwood, Mass.) with a pitch to reload the bases. Arsenault singled home the
third run, sophomore Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) beat out a fielder's
choice to plate the fourth run, and junior Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) singled
in the fifth run.
After the Monks picked up an unearned run in the top of the fifth,
Arsenault came up with the base full and hit his second home run of the season
over the left-center field fence to blow the game open.
Yanni hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning after consecutive infield
errors allowed the first two USM batters to reach base.
Bourque finished the game with three singles and Skeffington had two
singles as the Huskies pounded out 16 hits off four St. Joseph's hurlers.
Junior Chris Doughty (Windham, Maine/Cheverus) was the lone repeat hitter for
the Monks.
Freshman right-hander Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) went the
first seven innings for the Huskies, allowing three hits and two walk while
fanning 10 to improve to 4-1. Both runs he allowed were unearned. Stout took
the loss for the Monks to fall to 2-2

Southern Maine, Husson Split Doubleheader
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman southpaw Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryebrug
Academy) pitched a complete game and sophomore OF Eddie Skeffington (Everett,
Mass.) hit a two-run homer to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a
6-2 victory over the Husson College Eagles in the second game of a non-
conference college baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the USM Baseball
Stadium.
In the opener, Eagles junior 3B Adam Sheehan (Bucksport, Maine) delivered
an RBI single in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and the Eagles went on to
win the game 3-2.
The teams played the twinbill Sunday rather than the scheduled home-and-
home series with USM traveling to Husson on Tuesday because of forecasted bad
weather. The split leaves the Huskies at 23-12 heading into the final week of
their regular season. The Eagles conclude their regular season schedule at 24-
14.
In the first game, Husson sophomore Keith Nason (Glenburn, Maine) and USM
freshman Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine) hooked up in an excellent pitchers
duel. Husson touched Therrian for a single run in the second inning, taking
advantage of two USM errors and an RBI groundout by senior RF Chris McInnis
(Winslow, Maine). USM tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by junior 1B
Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine).
With one out in the sixth, senior SS Jason Harvey (Bucksport, Maine)
singled off Therrian, who was lifted in favor of rookie reliever Josh Connors
(Winthrop, Mass./Catholic Memorial). A double by senior DH Sean Brawn (Augusta,
Maine) and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Sheehan who delivered the
tie-breaking run with a single to center field. McInnis followed with an RBI
single to make it 3-1 before Connors worked himself out of the jam.
Southern Maine threatened in the seventh as a single by Skeffington and a
double by Arsenault put runners at second and third. Sophomore P Samuel
Adolphsen (Union, Maine) came on for the Eagles to get three straight ground
ball outs to save the game.
Nason got the win to improve to 2-0 while Adolphsen earned the save.
Therrian, the tough luck loser, fell to 0-1. Brawn and Arsenault were the only
repeat hitters.
In the nightcap, Husson jumped on Stacy for a run in the first inning when
Sheehan walked with the bases loaded, but the rookie hurler got out of further
trouble by striking out the next batter to end the inning.
The Huskies grabbed the lead in the second on an RBI double by junior 3B
Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) and an RBI single by junior C Jordan Yanni (Gray,
Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). USM added a single run in the third on an RBI
single by junior RF Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine), and a single run in the
fourth on another RBI single by Yanni. Skeffington hit his two-run homer in the
fifth to make it 6-1.
Husson loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but was only able to
get one run on senior OF Justin Spencer's (Brewer, Maine) fielder's choice.
Stacy was able to get the next batter to pop out to finish his first complete
game.
Stacy scattered five hits and four walks while striking out seven for his
second win of the season. Freshman left-hander Chad Lavway (Presque Isle,
Maine) started for the Eagles, going four innings, and was tagged with the loss.
Bourque and Yanni were the only repeat hitters in the game.

University of Southern Maine Huskies a 4-3 victory over the St. Joseph's College
Monks in a non-conference college baseball game Thursday night at Mahaney Field.
The win was the third straight, and 12th in the last 15 games, for the
Huskies who raised their record to 20-11. It also marks the 22nd straight
season that the Huskies have won 20 or more games. St. Joseph's, which had not
lost since April 8, a stretch of 16 games (15-0-1), slips to 28-7-1. The two
teams will meet for the third time this season on Monday (3:30 p.m.) at the USM
Baseball Stadium.
In the 12th inning, the Huskies loaded the bases with one out on two
singles and an intentional walk. Stowell brought junior RF Ryan Bourque
(Sanford, Maine) home with the winning run on a ground ball.
The Huskies survived a Monks' threat in the bottom half of the inning as
sophomore Luke Enman (Milan, N.H./Berlin) led off with a walk, advanced to
second on a sacrifice and took third on a passed ball. Enman was stranded there
when USM senior P Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) got the final out on a strikeout.
St. Joseph's rallied from a 3-1 deficit with single runs in the seventh and
ninth innings to force the game into extra innings. Sophomore SS Brian Schools
(Gorham, Maine) drove in the seventh inning run with a single. Junior 3B Mark
Clapp (Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens Academy), who hit a solo home run in the
first inning, tied it the ninth with a clutch two-out single.
The Huskies scored a single run in the first on a double by freshman 3B
Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) and two groundouts. Freshman C Stefan
Black (West Gardiner, Maine) gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the second inning
with an RBI single, and junior SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) increased the
lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning with a solo homer.
Foley picked up his fourth win of the season with two innings of shutout
relief. Freshman Chris Leger (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant), the fifth of six St. Joe's
pitchers, took the loss.

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior 2B Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) had four hits
and three RBI to pace the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 16-2 victory
over the Bates College Bobcats in a non-conference college baseball game Tuesday
afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Huskies who improve to
18-11 overall. Bates dropped it second straight to fall to 9-13 overall.
Vardaro, with a double and three singles, led the Huskies' 18-hit assault
on three Bobcat hurlers. Freshman Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine/Deering) came
off the bench to have three hits, and five other Huskies collected two hits in
the game.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a lead off triple by
freshman CF Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Vardaro's RBI
groundout.
A five-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of
sophomore DH Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and a two-run triple by Ryan
Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), pushed the lead to 6-0.
Southern Maine got a single run in the fourth on Vardaro's RBI double, and
five more in the fifth to take a commanding 12-0 lead. Junior RF Ryan Bourque
(Sanford, Maine) had a two-run double in the middle of the fifth inning
outburst.
Bates got on the board with its two runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore 1B
Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H./Holderness School) plated the first run with a fielder's
choice, and freshman Ben Thayer (Gorham, Maine) walked with the bases loaded to
force in the second run.
Freshman Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), the first of four
USM pitchers, was the beneficiary of all the run support. Stacy went 5.2
innings, allowing four hits and six walks while striking out seven, to earn his
first win of the season. Three relievers combined to pitch 3.1 innings of
hitless relief.
Bates rookie starting pitcher Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.)
lasted 2.1 innings and was tagged with the loss. Sophomore SS Brian Mahoney
(Sudbury, Mass.) was the lone repeat hitter for the Bobcats.

Wheaton Sweeps Southern Maine 9-7 and 5-2
GORHAM, Maine -- The Wheaton College Lyons came from behind twice Sunday
afternoon to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies by scores of 9-7 and
5-2 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at the USM Baseball Stadium.
In the opening game, the Lyons used a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by
a grand slam home run by sophomore Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old
Rochester Regional), to erase a 4-3 deficit, then withstood a Huskies rally for
the 9-7 win.
In the nightcap, the Lyons took advantage of two walks, two hit batsmen, a
sacrifice fly and three singles to push five runs across in the fourth inning to
wipe out a 2-0 deficit en route to the 5-2 decision.
The sweep extends the Lyons' winning streak to 20 games, and raises their
overall record to 27-6. The Huskies fall to 17-11 overall.
In the first game, the Huskies forged a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a
double by freshman OF Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), a wild pitch and
an RBI groundout by freshman Jeff Skillin (Portland, Maine/Deering).
Wheaton tied the game in the sixth when senior SS Rafael Castillo (Queens,
N.Y./Christ the King) scored on an infield error. After a walk loaded the
bases, senior P Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine/Mt. Ararat), on in relief of
freshman starting P Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering), got a foul pop up
for the second out. O'Connor then drove a pitch over the center field fence to
put the Lyons up 8-4. Senior DH Mark Baumer (Durham, Maine/Greely) scored the
final run on a wild pitch.
Senior P Jamie Baker (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) came on in the
bottom half of the inning to get the Lyons out of a jam as the Huskies scored
three runs and had the tying run to the plate. Baker would give up two hits in
the seventh, but then retired three straight batters to save the win for senior
starter Chris Martin (Marshfield, Mass.).
Southern Maine jumped on Wheaton starter Louie Bernardini (Gray, Maine/Gray
New Gloucester) for a pair of runs in the first inning of game two to take a 2-0
lead. Junior 2B Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.), who led off with a double,
scored on a ground out, and Burleson, who walked, would score on an RBI double
by Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine).
Bernardini settled down after the first to allow just six hits and three
walks in a complete game effort. He struck out seven along the way to earn his
fourth win of the season.
The Lyons did all their damage in the fourth inning. A walk and two hit
batsmen by Rogers, who started the second game, loaded the bases and brought on
senior Andrew Portwine (Gorham, Maine) in relief. Junior C Adam Laplante
(Harwich, Mass.) brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Sophomore 2B Jake Yagjian (Brewster, Mass./Nauset Regional) and senior Mark
Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Another walk
reloaded the bases before junior CF Brandon Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) rapped a
two-run single to center.

Southern Maine Sweeps Keene State 9-6 and 7-6
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman relief pitcher Josh Connors (Winthrop,
Mass./Catholic Memorial) picked up the win in both games of a Little East
Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday as the University of Southern Maine
Huskies swept the Keene State College Owls by scores of 9-6 and 7-6 at the USM
Baseball Stadium.
The sweep improves the Huskies' records to 17-9 overall and 7-2 in the
conference, and moves them into first place in the LEC standings. The Huskies
have won nine of their last 10 games. Keene State, which came into the
doubleheader as the conference leader, drops to 22-11 overall and 7-3 in
conference play.
Connors entered the first game in the sixth inning with two on and one out,
got out of the jam without further damage, and went on to hurl 3.2 innings of
no-hit relief. He walked two, struck out three and picked up the win when the
Huskies rallied for three runs in the eight inning to snap a 6-6 tie.
Displaying an outstanding curveball, Connors came into the second game with
the bases loaded in the fifth inning and struck out the first batter he faced to
end that threat. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs,
walked none and fanned three. He picked up the win, his fourth of the season,
with save help from senior Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine/Mt. Ararat) in the
ninth.
In the opening game, the teams combined for 24 hits and nine errors in the
game. The Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with three unearned runs
as USM committed three errors. Junior C John Grainger (Keene, N.H.) had a two-
run single to bring in the first two runs and scored the third on an infield
error.
The Owls added single runs in the next three innings to build a 6-1 lead
before the Huskies began their comeback. The Huskies would tally three in the
fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to forge a 6-6 tie. The run in
the sixth came in on a lead-off solo home run by freshman LF Ryan Pike (Saco,
Maine/Thornton Academy).
USM would get the winning runs in the eighth. Sophomore LF-1B Eddie
Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to force in the go ahead
run, and junior DH Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) smacked a two-out, two-run single
to add a pair of insurance runs.
In the second game, it was the Huskies who jumped out to the early lead,
then had to hold off the Owls comeback bid.
The Huskies combined six hits, a hit batsman, a balk and two KSC errors to
score six runs. Junior 2B Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) drove in the first run
with a single, and freshman CF Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) followed
with a two run single. A single by Skeffington and a hit batter loaded the
bases for McGhee.
McGhee's pop up was ruled an infield fly, but the wind pushed the ball into
short left field where tipped off the Keene State infielder's glove. Burleson
scored after the ball was dropped, and the other runners advanced on a throwing
error by the Keene State outfielder trying to throw Burleson out at home.
Junior C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) followed with an RBI single, and the
final run scored on an infield error.
The Owls put up four runs in the fifth inning to chase USM sophomore
starter Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland). Freshmen CF Jeff Perkins
(Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown) and 2B James Chevalier (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan)
walked with the bases loaded to force home the first two runs. Senior DH Jeremy
Schilling (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) brought in two more with a single to
chased Ross. A fielder's choice loaded the bases, and Connors came on to record
a strikeout to end the inning.
Southern Maine got a single run on a solo homer by Burleson in the seventh.
Keene State got one on a solo homer by Grainger in the eighth to pull back
within one.
The Owls nicked Connors for another run in the ninth on an RBI single by
Chevalier that brought Rogers into the game. Rogers fanned the first batter he
faced, walked the next to put the potential go ahead run on base, then struck
out the final batter to record the save.
Southern Maine is scheduled to host Wheaton College in a doubleheader

St. Joseph's Rallies to Defeat Southern Maine 7-4
GORHAM, Maine -- The St. Joseph's College Monks rallied for five runs
over the final two innings en route to a 7-4 win over the University of Southern
Maine in a non-conference college baseball game Friday afternoon at the USM
Baseball Field.
The win extends the Monks' winning streak to 10 game and improves their
overall record to 23-6. The Huskies, who had their seven-game winning streak
stopped, slip to 15-9 overall.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the eighth inning, the Monks used two hits, a hit
batsman and a throwing error to score three times to take a 5-4 lead. They
added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth to seal the win.
Sophomore SS Brian Schools (Gorham, Maine) opened the eighth with a single,
and moved to second when junior LF Keil Martin (Saco, Maine) was hit by a pitch.
Junior 3B Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens Academy) laid down a
sacrifice bunt that was thrown away down the right field line, allowing School
and Martin to score, and Clapp to wind up on third. Sophomore 2B Luke Enman
(Milan, N.H./Berlin) smacked a double to score Clapp with the go ahead run.
In the ninth, sophomore CF Dustin Spiller (Gorham, Maine), who had three
hits, came up with a clutch two-out, two-run single to give the Monks some
breathing room.
Southern Maine opened a 4-0 lead in the first three innings before the
Monks chipped away for an unearned run in the fourth and seventh innings.
The Huskies scored in the first on a sacrifice fly by junior RF Ryan
Bourque (Sanford, Maine). In the third, the Huskies got RBI singles from
Bourque and junior 1B Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine). Bourque, who had taken
second on a throw to plate, scored when Arsenault's single was mishandled in the
outfield.
Senior P Jack Hughes (Dudley, Mass.) picked up the win in relief. Hughes
came on with one out in the seventh and struck out three of the four batters he
faced. Sophomore DH/P Charlie Furbush (South Portland, Maine) came on in the
eight to earn a save. Furbush fanned four of the five batters he faced.
Senior P Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine/Mt. Ararat) was tagged with the
loss. The Huskies got an outstanding starting effort from senior P Pat Foley
(Norwood, Mass.). Foley did not allow a hit until Spiller beat out an infield
single in the fifth, and pitched into the seventh before being lifted. Foley
allowed just three hits, did not walk anyone and struck out six. Both runs
charge to him were unearned.
