Eastern Connecticut Eliminates Southern Maine at LEC Tournament
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors
scored four unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and
went on to a 9-5 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
elimination game in the 2005 Little East Conference Baseball Championship
Tournament being played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The Warriors stay alive in the double-elimination tournament and will play
Rhode Island College, the lone unbeaten team left in the tournament, tonight at
7:00 p.m. Eastern Connecticut is now 30-12 overall. Southern Maine, which lost
its second straight game after opening with a 4-2 win over Western Connecticut, is
eliminated from the tournament and ends its season 25-14 overall.
In the decisive eighth inning, the Huskies appeared to get out of a two-out,
bases loaded jam, but an infield error allowed two runs to score. Junior OF Marc
Garofalo (South Kingstown, R.I.) followed with a double into the left-center field
gap to plate the final two runs.
Southern Maine made it interesting in the ninth, loading the bases on three
singles, but sophomore 2B Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) flied out to deep center field
to end the ball game.
Garofalo, who had three hits and four RBI in the game, helped the Warriors
get off to a fast start. Senior OF Jason Pekrul (Berlin, Conn.) led off the game
with a double off of USM junior right-hander Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine),
and senior SS Tom Koch (Warwick, R.I.) singled him home. A walk to junior 3B
Brett Mehrbach (Lyme, N.H.) ended Rogers day, and junior RHP Tip Fairchild
(Monmouth, Maine) came on for the Huskies. Garofalo greeted Fairchild with a
triple down the right field line to score Koch and Mehrbach. Garofalo later
scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.
USM came back to tie the game with four runs in the fourth. Ganley knocked
in the first run with an infield single. Sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood,
Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run. Sophomore
LHP Matt Cremins (Stoughton, Mass.) was brought on to face left-handed hitting
sophomore OF Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine). The strategy backfired as Bourque
pulled a double into the right field corner scoring two runs.
Mehrbach led off the Eastern Connecticut fifth with a double and scored on a
one-out single by senior DH Leon Galemba (Fairfield, Conn.).
USM tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh as freshman OF Eddie Skeffington
(Everett, Mass.) doubled with one out and scored on Fairchild's two-out single.
Skeffington paced the Huskies' offense with four hits. Fairchild and
freshman 3B Rich McGraw (Simsbury, Conn.) each had a pair of hits. Pekrul and
Garofalo each had three hits for the Warriors.
Senior RHP Ben O'Brien (Montville, Conn.), who came on in the seventh after
Fairchild's single, went the final 2.1 innings to get the win. Sophomore RHP Pat
Foley (Norwood, Mass.), who came on in the eighth for the Huskies, was the tough-
luck loser. Fairchild was outstanding in long relief, going 7.0 innings. He
allowed nine hits, one earned run and struck out eight.

Rhode Island College Upsets Southern Maine 7-4
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman 2B Peter Olson (North Providence, R.I.) hit
a two-run double and later scored during a five-run sixth-inning rally that
lifted the fifth-seeded Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 7-4 upset win over
the third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the second day of play
at the Little East Conference Baseball Tournament being played at the ECSU
Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The win leaves the Anchormen, 17-19 overall, as the only unbeaten team
remaining in the double-elimination tournament. Southern Maine, now 25-13
overall, falls into the losers bracket needing to win twice Friday to stay
alive. Other results Thursday included sixth-seeded UMass Boston shutting out
second-seeded Keene State College, 6-0, in an elimination game, and fourth-
seeded Western Connecticut State University staved off elimination by beating
top-seeded Eastern Connecticut 5-4.
Friday’s schedule has Eastern Connecticut playing Southern Maine at 12:00
p.m., followed by UMass Boston taking on Western Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. Rhode
Island College plays the winner of the ECSU-USM game at 7:00 p.m.
Olson doubled into the left-center field gap to score senior 3B Chris
Smaldone (Johnston, R.I.) and senior SS Jamie Aldoupolis (Ashland, Mass.), both
who had walked. Olson moved to third on an infield error and scored on a double
by senior OF Chris Higgins (Swansea, Mass.). Sophomore C Tim Henault (East
Greenwich, R.I.), who reached on the error, scored on an RBI single by freshman
1B Jim Connell (Smithfield, R.I.). Higgins would score the final run on a wild
pitch.
Southern Maine threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but was unable
to push across any runs. Senior DH/P Matt Brannon (Cranston, R.I.) came on for
the Anchormen to get the final out in the eighth, then retired the side in order
in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Anchormen, who have never won the LEC tournament, took a 2-0 lead in
the second inning on an RBI double by Smaldone and an RBI single from
Aldoupolis.
Senior OF Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) and freshman DH Eddie
Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) had back-to-back RBI singles for USM in the third
to tie the game. The Huskies took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on back-to-back RBI
doubles from sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore OF Ryan
Bourque (Sanford, Maine).
Junior RHP Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, R.I.), who worked in and out of trouble
all night for the Anchormen, went seven innings to pick up his third win of the
season. Sophomore Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine), the first of four USM hurlers, was
tagged with the loss.
Southern Maine out hit Rhode Island College, 13-8. Sophomore 2B Joe Ganley
(Keene, N.H.) paced the Huskies’ attack with three singles. Vardaro, Bourque
and Brewer each had two hits.

Brewer Homers to Lift USM Past Western Connecticut, 4-2
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior 1B Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) hit a
two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the
third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-2 victory over the
fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a first round
game of the double-elimination Little East Conference Baseball Championship
Tournament being played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies and improved their overall
record to 25-12. USM will play fifth-seeded Rhode Island College Thursday night
in a second round game. Rhode Island College upset second-seeded Keene State
College, 8-3, in an earlier game Wednesday afternoon. Western Connecticut must
beat top seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, a 5-1 winner Wednesday
over the University of Massachusetts Boston, to stay alive. UMass Boston plays
Keene State in an elimination game Thursday.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, USM sophomore C Max Arsenault
(Boothbay, Maine) hit a double to center field to get into scoring position.
After a routine fly out, Brewer came to the plate and drove a 2-0 pitch from
junior Zane Honious (Wallingford, Conn.) over the center-field fence for his
sixth homer of the season.
Junior right-hander Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine), making just his second
appearance since being injured April 24 against Western Connecticut, picked up
the win in relief of sophomore left-hander Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.).
Fairchild (5-2) received some stellar defensive help in the ninth inning as
junior OF Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) made a fine running catch in the
outfield and doubled off a Western Connecticut base runner at second base to end
the game.
Fairchild went 1.1 innings, striking out two, walking one and did not allow
a hit. Bergeron went 7.2 innings, surrendering six hits and four walks while
fanning a season-high 11.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as the first of two doubles
by Arsenault scored sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) who had walked.
Freshman OF Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.), playing in his first game in 11
days, hit a solo home run in the second inning to make it 2-0.
The Colonials tied the game in the fourth inning on a two-out, two-run
double by senior DH T.J. Tarantino (Rutherford, N.J.). Western had an
opportunity to take the lead in the sixth, but Bergeron got out of a two-out,
first-and-third situation by picking junior C Adam Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.) off
first base.
Honious pitched brilliantly for the Colonials after serving up
Skeffington’s fifth homer of the season in the second inning. He allowed only
two hits, a single to Skeffington in the fourth and a bunt single to Lemieux in
the seventh, between the third and seventh innings.
Arsenault, Brewer and Skeffington each had two hits for the Huskies. Adam
Kaplan was the lone repeat hitter for the Colonials.

Southern Maine Sweeps UMass Dartmouth, 3-1 and 6-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman RHP Kyle Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine) threw seven
solid innings in the second game of a doubleheader to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Corsairs in Little East Conference action Sunday afternoon at Towers Field in
Gorham, Maine. Southern Maine took the opener 3-1 and then used nine-hit effort
to take the nightcap 6-3.
With the pair of wins the Huskies improve to 24-12 overall and 9-5 in the
Little East. Suffering their sixth loss in as many games the Corsairs drop to
10-28 overall and 4-10 in conference action.
Fecteau gave up two runs - one earned - over seven innings to lead the
Huskies to the 6-3 win in the nightcap. He allowed four hits with two walks and
two strikeouts. With the win, Fecteau stands at 2-0.
Sophomore Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) paced USM offensively. He
drove in both of the Huskies runs in the fourth inning when he knocked a two-out
double to left-center field to give USM a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies would increase their advantage to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth
on an RBI single from sophomore C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region),
before the Corsairs would make a game of it with two runs in the top of the
seventh.
With two outs, UMass Dartmouth sophomore 3B Jason Lamoreaux (Walpole,
Mass./Walpole) singled in the Corsairs first run of the inning to cut the USM lead
to 5-1. The Corsairs then pulled to within three runs when a misplayed ball in
the infield allowed freshman 2B Kevin Narey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn) to come home for an
unearned run. Narey had reached with a single earlier in the inning.
USM got one run back in the eighth when sophomore DH Joe Ganley (Keene,
N.H./Keene) singled to start the inning and came around to score on a hit-batsman,
a stolen base and an error.
UMass Dartmouth tried again to rally in the top of the ninth, plating a run
on an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield from senior OF Jeremy Robidoux (Charleton,
Mass./Bartlett), but Southern Maine junior RHP Andrew Portwine (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) forced a ground out to end the inning to earn his first save of the
season.
In the opener, the Huskies parlayed solid pitching efforts from three
different pitchers to earn the 3-1 win. Sophomore RHP Josh Armandi (Jay,
Maine/Jay) started the game for the Huskies, striking out six batters while giving
up two hits and three walks in four innings. Senior RHP Erik Kent (Newburyport,
Mass./Lawrence Academy) cam on to hurl three hitless innings with a strikeout and
a walk. Senior RHP Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) closed the game for
USM to earn the save. Kent picked up the win for the Huskies and is now 3-0 on
the season.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, USM plated two runs in the bottom of
the inning and added a third run in the seventh to down the Corsairs 3-1.
Vardaro drew a walk to open the inning for Southern Maine, advanced to second
on a single from Arsenault, and moved to third on a fielder's choice from Brewer.
With Brewer and Vardaro on first and third respectively, Vardaro came around to
score on a double-steal as UMass Dartmouth elected to try for Brewer, tying the
score at 1-1. Sophomore C Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) then put the
Huskies ahead 2-1 when hit knocked in Brewer with an RBI single.
Portwine rounded out the scoring for the Huskies in the seventh, driving in
junior OF Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) with a two-out single for the
3-1 final.
Southern Maine returns to action, Wednesday, May 11 in the opening round of

Babson Scores Five in the 9th, Downs USM 8-7
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College scored five runs in the bottom of
the ninth inning to claim a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the
visiting University of Southern Maine in a non-conference baseball contest on
Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Beavers improved to 17-17 overall, while the Huskies fell
to 22-12.
With the contest tied at 2-2, USM took the lead with three runs in the top
of the fifth, as junior OF Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) hit a two-run
single with one out and sophomore Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) later added a two-out
RBI hit.
Babson answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth that made
it 5-3, but sophomore C Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) led off the top of the
seventh with a solo homer to left to push the Huskies lead back to three.
Freshman 3B Rich McGraw (Simsbury, Conn.) singled home senior OF Brandon
Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) in his team's final at-bat to give the Huskies a 7-3
lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Babson began its rally with three straight hits, as sophomore OF Billy
Lucas (Atlanta, Ga.), rookie 2B Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass.), and junior C Ted
Dziuba (Wayne, N.J.) each recorded singles off USM sophomore reliever Pat Foley
(Norwood, Mass.). A passed ball allowed Lucas to score, and freshman DH Robbie
Leer (Edina, Minn.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Delaney
to make it 7-5.
After Foley got the second out, rookie OF Jay Verrill (Auburn, Maine)
recorded his third hit of the game to put runners at the corners. Junior RHP
Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) replaced Foley and loaded the bases with walk to
sophomore 3B Matt Chatterton (Fall River, Mass.). Freshman OF Steve Tahmoush
(Arlington, Mass.) beat out an infield hit, plating Dziuba with the Beavers'
sixth run. Sophomore SS Billy Schmitt (Fairview, N.J.) then won the game for

Bergeron Fires a Complete Game to Lead Huskies Past UMass Boston 5-2
QUINCY, Mass. -- Sophomore left-hander Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H./Keene)
fired a complete-game, yielding just two hits, to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-2 Little East Conference win over the University
of Massachusetts Boston Beacons Wednesday afternoon in a game played at Eastern
Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 22-11 overall and 7-5 in the Little
East Conference, securing a bid to the LEC Championship Tournament. With the
loss, UMass Boston slips to 13-16 overall and 3-6 in the LEC.
Leading USM to the win, Bergeron scattered two hits over nine innings of
solid work on the mound, fanning eight batters and giving up just one earned run
to pick up his fourth win of the season. Bergeron held the Beacons hitless
until the bottom of the seventh when he surrendered a two-out single junior Mike
Yagmin (New Britain, Conn./Northwest Catholic).
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI
single from senior OF Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), but found
themselves tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after the Beacons capitalized
on a USM error. With one out, sophomore P Evan Tardugno (Methuen,
Mass./Methuen) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score senior SS Darwin
Gonzalez (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) for an unearned run.
Southern Maine reclaimed the lead in the top of the third on two-run home
run from sophomore 1B Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) to pull
ahead 3-1. The round-tripper was the fourth of the season for Arsenault.
With Bergeron silencing the Beacon bats, retiring a string of 10
consecutive batters, the Huskies padded their lead with a run in the sixth
inning. Sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) led off the top of
the sixth with a single to right field and then put himself in scoring position
stealing second for his 11th stolen base of the season. With one out, sophomore
OF Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) knocked in Vardaro with an RBI single
to right field to put the Huskies on top 4-1.
Freshman DH Rich McGrawís (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) sacrifice fly to
left field in the ninth inning put the Huskies firmly ahead 5-1, before Southern
Maine headed into the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the final inning, UMass Boston recorded just its second
hit of the game and scored its second run of the game when senior 1B Paul
Tedesco (East Boston, Mass./Savio Prep) cranked his fourth home-run of the
season over the left field fence to cut the USM lead to 5-2. But, Bergeron
fired right back forcing a ground out and recording his seventh and eighth
strikeouts of the game to end the game and seal the win.
Southern Maine returns to action Thursday, May 5 in a non-conference game
against the Babson College Beavers in Babson Park, Mass. First pitch is slated
for 3:30 p.m. UMass Boston returns to the diamond Thursday at home against LEC

Eddie Skeffington Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman outfielder Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been selected as the
Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for his play the week of April 25
through May 1. The weekly award was announced Monday afternoon by the conference
media relations office.
Skeffington is the third USM player this season to receive a weekly LEC
citation. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) was named the Player
of the Week for the period of April 11-17, and junior pitcher Tip Fairchild
(Monmouth, Maine) was selected as the Pitcher of the Week on two occasions.
Despite missing two games with an injury, Skeffington batted .400 (6 for 15)
in the four games he played, scored four runs, had seven RBI and hit a home run in
three consecutive games. He was 4-for-7 (.571) in the doubleheader against
Plymouth State University before leaving the second game with an injury. He hit
safely in the four games he played, and had multiple-hit games in both ends of the
doubleheader against Plymouth State.
On the season, Skeffington is batting .382 (34 for 89) with 18 runs scored,
six doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBI. He is currently second on the
team in batting and home runs, third in RBI, and leads the Huskies in slugging
percentage (.607).
Southern Maine heads into the final week of the regular season at 21-11
overall and 6-5 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies next game is Wednesday
(May 4) at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The baseball doubleheader between the University of Southern Maine

doubleheader, has been cancelled. The Huskies' single, nine-inning game with
Bates College, postponed on April 27, has been rescheduled to Sunday, May 8, at
1:00 p.m.

complete game to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeat the Keene
State College Owls 8-4 in the first game of the teams' Little East Conference
baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Owl Stadium in Keene, N.H.
The Owls came back in the second game to tie the game in the eighth inning
and push across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases loaded walk
to freshman Ryan Jones (Nashua, N.H.) to salvage a split of the doubleheader.
The split leaves the Huskies at 21-11 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
Keene State is

season for both teams before the LEC tournament May 11-14.

Kinslow (Westbrook, Maine) added to the lead with an RBI single in the second, and
sophomore C Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) made it 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI
single.
Southern Maine added a pair of runs in the fifth and two in the seventh on a
two-run homer by sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine).
Keene State tried to mount a rally against Armandi in the seventh, scoring
two runs on an RBI double by junior OF Jeremy Schilling (Centerville, Mass.) and
senior OF Matt Orszulak's (Campton, N.H.) groundout. Armandi left the bases
loaded though, getting the final out on a fly to right.

6-5 lead in the eighth inning with his first home run of the season, but the Husky
bullpen could not hold the lead.

the home half of the inning on an RBI double from freshman OF Greg Ford (Nashua,
N.H.).
The Owls pushed across the winning run in the ninth on two singles, a
sacrifice fielder's choice and Jones' walk.

single in the first. Senior 2B Mike Masseur (Warwick, R.I.) made it 3-0 in the
second with an RBI double that scored Jones.
USM got one back in the third on an RBI single by Bourque, the took a 5-3
lead in the fifth with four runs. Sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.)
plated one run with a double and Brewer drove in the second with a single. Back-
to-back hit batters with the bases loaded produced the last two runs.
Grainger scored a run in the fifth to pull the Owls within one, then tied the
game in the sixth with an RBI single.
Brewer, who came on in relief in the eighth inning, was tagged with the loss.
Ford, who got the final two outs in the ninth inning, picked up his first win for
the Owls.

Western Connecticut Sweeps Southern Maine
DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University Colonials baseball
team shook things up in the Little East Conference with a doubleheader sweep of
University of Southern Maine Huskies Sunday afternoon, 8-6 and 9-8, at Westside
Field in Danbury, Conn.
The sweep gives the Colonials six wins in their last seven games, and
improved their record to 11-13 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The Huskies
have lost three straight games to slide to 17-9 overall and 4-3 in the LEC.
In the nightcap, the Colonials came all the way back after trailing 8-0 in
the sixth inning. DJ Mulhall (Stratford, CT), who came into the twinbill two hits
shy of tying WestConn's career hit record, waited until the most opportune time to
deliver that coveted base hit.
Mulhall capped off the comeback with a single to left center field with one
out in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game-winning hit was set up when Matt
Gardiner (Terryville, CT), who went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, led off the
inning with a single. Gardiner moved over to second when Steven Schwartz
(Patterson, NY) worked a walk. Kevin Darcey (Levittown, NY) advanced both runners
with a sacrifice bunt. Southern Maine set up a force at all bases with an
intentional walk to Nick Parker (Old Saybrook, CT). After fouling off several
pitches off lefty reliever Peter Bergeron (Keene, NH), Mulhall singled to short
left field, plating Gardiner with the winning run.
Mulhall now has 146 hits, tying WCSU Hall of Famer Phil Colla who played for
the Colonials in 1987-89 and 1991.

St. Joseph's Wins 10th Straight Downing Southern Maine 5-3
GORHAM, Maine -- The St. Joseph's College Monks scored four runs in the
fifth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit and went on to win their 10th straight game
Friday afternoon, defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-3 in a non-
conference game in Gorham, Maine.
The Monks upped their overall record to 20-7 with the victory. Southern
Maine had its four-game winning streak snapped to fall to 17-7. The two teams
will meet again next Thursday (April 28, 5:00 p.m.) at St. Joseph's.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first three innings. The
Huskies scored twice in the second on an RBI singles by freshman 3B Rich McGraw
(Simsbury, Conn.) and sophomore 2B Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.), and picked up a
single run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by sophomore OF Ryan
Bourque (Sanford, Maine) and junior 1B Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine). In both
innings, the Monks defense helped out sophomore left-handed starter Ben Cutter
(Westbrook, Maine) by turning a double play.
The Monks got one run back in the fourth against sophomore left-hander Peter
Bergeron (Keene, N.H.) as senior C Derek McIntosh (Auburn, Maine), who reached on
a wild pitch as he struck out, scored on a two-out, RBI single by junior OF Aaron
Cislak (Windham, Maine).
In the fifth, the Monks parlayed a pair of hits, two hit batsman, a double
steal and an infield error into four runs. With the bases loaded, sophomore 2B
Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, Maine) slapped a two-run single to tie the game. McIntosh
hit into a fielder's choice, erasing Clapp at second, and leaving runners at first
and third with two away.
McIntosh took off from first, getting caught in a rundown. That allowed
senior OF Andy Exley (Portland, Maine) to beat the throw home for the go ahead
run. McIntosh, who wound up at second, scored on an infield throwing error.
Cutter settled down after the first three innings, pitching into the seventh
inning to collect his third win of the season. Senior Jack Hughes (Dudley,
Mass.), the last of three Monks relievers, picked up the save pitching to three
batters in the ninth.
Bergeron, the second of four USM hurlers, was tagged with his third loss of
the season.

Southern Maine Comes From Behind to Down Colby, 10-5
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) pitched six innings
of scoreless, two-hit long relief as the University of Southern Maine Huskies
rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Colby College White Mules 10-5 in a non-
conference game Wednesday afternoon.
The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall
record to 17-6. Colby remains winless on the season, dropping to 0-20.
Foley entered the game with no outs and a man on first in the second inning
and the Mules leading 5-0. He quickly got a double play ball and a groundout to
end the inning. The right-hander was brilliant, retiring the first 14 batters he
faced before junior Greg Ortiz (Northbrook, Ill.) reached him for a single to open
the seventh. Foley would allow just two singles, no walks and struck out three.
Under threatening skies, the Huskies wiped out the Colby lead with a five-run
rally in the fourth inning. A costly infield error on a potential double play
grounder hurt the Mules. Sophomore Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) had a bases
loaded single to plate the Huskies' first two runs. After a hit batsman,
consecutive bases loaded walks to sophomores Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) and Nick
Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) brought in two more runs and ended the pitching efforts
of Colby sophomore starter Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.).
Colby brought on sophomore Robert Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) and he walked
the first batter he faced, sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine), to force in
the tying run. Rosenbaum escaped further damage getting a double play.
USM took the lead for good in the fifth inning as senior Brandon Brewer
(Cumberland, Maine) walked, stole second and came home on an RBI single by
freshman Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.).
The Huskies added three insurance runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to
give Foley and junior Andrew Portwine (Gorham, Maine), who came on in the eighth
inning, a cushion.
Colby looked like it might break its losing streak in the first inning as the
first six batters reached base and four runs came across the plate against USM
freshman starter Kyle Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine). Carr had a two-run single and
junior Roddy Ames (Cotuit, Mass.) followed with an RBI double. The fourth run
scored on an infield error.
Freshman Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) added an RBI single in the second
inning to make 5-0 before Foley entered the game and shut down the Colby bats.
Junior Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) had three hits, and Bourque and
Skeffington had two each, for the Huskies.

five hits and five runs to take a 5-1 lead.
Southern Maine's first three batters, sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood,

ECSU junior left-hander Ryan DiPietro (Kensington, Conn.) matched Fairchild
with zeroes over the first five innings until the Huskies put three runs on the
board in the sixth. Fairchild helped his own cause with a lead-off single. After
a flyout, sophomore 1B Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) doubled home Fairchild for the
first run of the game. Sophomore C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) followed with
a single that scored McGhee. A groundout advanced Arsenault to second, and he

home on back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to freshman 3B Rich McGraw (Simsbury,
Conn.) and Skeffington. The Huskies pushed across a pair of insurance runs in the
eighth.

Haven, Conn.) to a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run. The
Warriors touched USM sophomore left-hander Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.) for four
more in the third, three coming in on a homer by sophomore OF Randy Re (Danbury,
Conn.).

including a two-run homer to Fairchild in the eighth, and three walks while
fanning eight. Senior SS Tom Koch (Warwick, R.I.) led the Warriors' offensive
assault with four hits.

SALEM, Mass. -- Junior Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) had four hits,
including two doubles and his second home run of the season, and a pair of RBI

hander Kyle Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine). Fecteau scattered six hits over eight
innings while walking two and striking out two to pick up his first collegiate
win.
In the decisive sixth inning, senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) led

The next two batters were retired before the Huskies worked back-to-back walks,
the second to freshman Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.), to force in the first
run.
Sophomore Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to force in
another run before sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) plated two runs with
a single. Vardaro scored the fifth run on a double steal, and Bourque came home
on an RBI single by sophomore Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.).

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored a pair of
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and went on to defeat the
Endicott College Gulls 7-5 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon.
The win improved the Huskies overall record to 11-5. USM travels to Salem
State College on Thursday for its next game. Endicott slips to 14-7.
Endicott tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth when freshman C Dan
Gomez (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who led off the inning with a triple, scored from
third on a wild pitch. The Huskies came right back in the home half of the
inning, bunching together two singles, an errant pick off attempt and a groundout
to produce the decisive runs.
Sophomore C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) and sophomore OF Ryan Bourque
(Sanford, Maine) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. An errant pick off
throw to first base by sophomore P Mike Daggett (Sabbatus, Maine) allowed
Arsenault to score from second and Bourque ended up at third. Freshman PH Rich
McGraw (Simsbury, Conn.) grounded out bringing home Bourque.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by
sophomore Pat Kinslow (Westbrook, Maine).
Endicott took a 4-1 advantage in the fourth as the Huskies' defense committed
two of its seven errors. After a lead-off single by sophomore Steve Vidmosko
(Shelton, Conn.), the next two batters reached on infield errors, Vidmosko scoring
on the second error. Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the Gulls' second run.
Back-to-back doubles by sophomore OF Brendan Tiani (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior
DH Jon Trowt (Beverly, Mass.) made it 4-1. All four runs were unearned against
USM junior starter Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine).
Run-scoring singles by Bourque and freshman OF Eddie Skeffington (Everett,
Mass.) cut the deficit to 4-3, and sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) gave
the Huskies a 5-4 lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth.

Southern Maine Sweeps Rhode Island College
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies received complete
game pitching efforts from junior right-hander Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) and
sophomore southpaw Peter Bergeron (Keene, N.H.) en route to a doubleheader sweep
of the Rhode Island College Anchormen in Little East Conference action Saturday
afternoon.
The Huskies took the first game 12-1 behind Fairchild's four-hit, 10-
strikeout performance, then came back in the nightcap to win 7-2 on Bergeron's
seven-hitter. The sweep improved the Huskies' overall record to 10-4 and 2-0 in
LEC play. Rhode Island College dips to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Fairchild was dominating throughout the first game. The only inning he had
any problems was the third when the Anchormen scored their only run on a double by
freshman Robert Doyon (Douglas, Mass.) and an RBI single by sophomore Tim Henault
(East Greenwich, R.I.). Fairchild helped his own cause by starting an inning-
ending double play. After the third, Doyon was the only RIC batter to get a hit
off of Fairchild, a double in the fifth.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back two-out doubles
by sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) and senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland,
Maine). After RIC tied the game in the third, the Huskies took the lead for good
in the fourth on a two-run single by sophomore Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.).
The Huskies blew the game wide open with four runs in the sixth and five more
(all unearned) in the seventh. Freshman Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) paced
USM's 18-hit attack with four hits while Brewer and sophomore Joe McGhee (Walpole,
Mass.) each had three hits.
Senior James Milano (Johnston, R.I.), the first of three RIC hurlers, worked
into the sixth before being lifted. He took the loss. Doyon was the only repeat
hitter for RIC.
In the second game of the twinbill, Bourque and Fairchild combined to stake
Bergeron with a 1-0 lead as Bourque tripled and Fairchild singled. After Brewer
was nicked by a pitch and McGhee reached on an infield error, sophomore Joe Ganley
(Keene, N.H.) singled in a run and freshman Rich McGraw (Simsbury, Conn.) walked
with the bases loaded to force in another to make it 3-0.
USM added two more in the third on an RBI single by sophomore Max Arsenault
(Boothbay, Maine) and a sacrifice fly by Skeffington to make it 5-0. Arsenault
added an RBI single in fourth, and the Huskies worked a double steal in the fifth
to take a 7-0 lead.
RIC picked up single runs in the sixth as Henault scored on a double play and
in the ninth on an RBI single by Brian Trupiano (Franklin, Mass.).
Bergeron scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out seven to earn
his third win of the season. Arsenault, Ganley and McGhee each had a pair of
hits.
Trupiano and Doyon had two hits each in the second game. Freshman right-
hander Eric Thibault (Somerset, Mass.) started for the Anchormen and took the
loss.

single in the fifth inning drove in what proved to be the decisive run as the
University of Southern Maine hung on for a 6-5 victory over the Bridgewater State
College Bears in a non-conference baseball game played Thursday afternoon at South

Bowdoin Rallies to Beat Southern Maine 10-7
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College Polar Bears rallied from a four-run
deficit to defeat in-state rival, the University of Southern Maine, on Wednesday,
10-7.
The Polar Bears (8-5) snap a three-game losing skid, while the Huskies (8-5)
lose their first game since returning from Florida last week. The contest was
originally scheduled to be played in Gorham, but was moved to Brunswick due to
poor field conditions. Southern Maine played as the home team.
Southern Maine chased Bowdoin freshman starter Pat Quinn (Seekonk, Mass.) for
five runs in the first inning to grab an early advantage, but six-run third put
the game in Bowdoin's favor. Sophomore John Lawrie (Walpole, Mass.) picked up a
two-run, line-drive triple to right center to highlight the inning, while juniors
Erik Morrison (Gray, Maine) and Ricky Leclerc (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore
Nick Lawler (Auburn, Maine) also picked up RBI's in the frame as the Polar Bears
grabbed a 7-5 lead.
Southern Maine got one back in the fourth, when junior Tip Fairchild
(Monmouth, Maine) cracked a solo home run over the left field wall to make it 7-6.
But Lawler gave Bowdoin some breathing room in the sixth inning, as he hit a two-
run shot to improve the lead to 9-6. Bowdoin got stellar relief pitching on the
day as the Polar Bear relief corps allowed just two runs on four hits over the
final 8.1 innings.
Bowdoin freshman Pat Driscoll (2-0) picked up his second win of the season,
while relievers Mark Bulger (Delmar, N.Y.), Jared Lemieux (Readfield, Maine) and
Trevor Powers Wells, Maine) put the game into the hands of freshman closer Ryan
Turgeon (Auburn, Maine), who started a key double-play in the ninth to preserve
the victory. Southern Maine sophomore starter Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine) was tagged
with his first loss of the season against two wins. Armandi allowed seven earned
runs in five innings.
At the plate, Bowdoin was led by Lemieux, who lifted his season average to
.514 with a 3 for 3 afternoon. Lawler and freshman K.J. Kozens (Falmouth, Mass.)
had two hits apiece for the Polar Bears. Southern Maine's Fairchild collected
three hits on the day, while also pitching 1.2 innings in relief, striking out
three batters.
