GORHAM, Maine -- Five members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
baseball team have been named to the Little East Conference All-Conference first

Maine) and senior relief pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine).
Selected to the second team were senior second baseman Andy Lang (New
Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore pitcher Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.).
This is the fourth consecutive year that Lang has been named to either the
first or second team at second base. For Marshall, a two-time second team honoree
at third base previously, and Adams, this is their third all-conference selection.
Marshall hit .350 (55 for 157) with 35 runs scored, eight doubles, three home
runs and a team-high 48 RBI. He also led the team in stolen bases (17), sacrifice
flies (5) and times hit by pitch (8). He is ranked second in the conference in

runs scored, 18 doubles, two home runs and 35 RBI. His .460 on-base percentage
was the best among the everyday players. He leads the conference in doubles per
game (0.41), is ranked fourth in batting average and tied for seventh with Lang in
hits per game (1.45).
Adams, who was the all-conference first team relief pitcher his first year
(2000) and first team as a starter last year, compiled a 1-2 record with a 4.08
ERA and a school record 11 saves in 24 appearances. He worked 39.2 innings
allowing 42 hits and 12 walks while striking out 36. He also set a school record
for career saves with 17. He is the saves leader in the conference.
Lang, a first team all-conference pick as a freshman (2000) and junior (2002)
and second team as a sophomore (2001), hit .372 (64 for 172) with a team-high 48
runs scored, 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 38 RBI. He led the
team triples and slugging percentage, and tied for the lead in home runs. He is

Little East Conference Tournament
Corsairs Eliminate Huskies, 6-5
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior 3B Tom Jachimczyk (Marion, Mass.) stroked a
two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie and the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs went on to defeat the University of Southern
Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon in an elimination game in the 2003 Little East
Conference Baseball Tournament being played at ECSU Baseball Stadium in
Mansfield, Conn.
The win moves the Corsairs (20-18-1) into the championship game Saturday
afternoon (4:00 p.m.) against top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University
(35-7). The winner of that game earns an automatic berth into the 2003 NCAA
Division III tournament. Southern Maine finishes its season at 28-16.
Sophomore SS Robert Delduca (Methuen, Mass.) opened the seventh for the
Corsairs with a single, then stole second. After a groundout to third and
lineout to first, Jachimczyk singled down the left field line off of sophomore
RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.), on in relief of senior RHP Ryan Adams (Sanford,
Maine), to chase Delduca home with what proved to be the decisive run.
Junior LHP Brandon Perry (South Carver, Mass.) made the lead stand up for
the Corsairs to pick up his fifth win of the season. Perry came on in relief of
junior starter Kyle Darrow (Marlboro, Mass.) in the seventh inning, and allowed
only two hits while striking out three over the final 2.2 innings.
The Corsairs took an early 2-0 early with single runs in the first and
second innings. Junior 2B Geoff Nettleton (Marlboro, Mass.) drove the first
inning run with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore C John Macone (Stoneham, Mass.)
brought home the second run with a single.
Southern Maine tied the game with a pair of runs in the third on a
sacrifice fly by senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) and an infield error.
Junior OF Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine), who went 4 for 4, gave USM
its first lead with an RBI single in the fourth, and later scored on junior OF
Adam Lemieux’s (Cumberland, Maine) double to make it 4-2.
UMD got one run back in its half of the fourth, and regained the lead with
two runs in the fifth. Jachimczyk, who was 2 for 4 with three RBI in the game,
doubled home UMD’s two runs in the fifth.
USM tied the game in the sixth on Loveless’ RBI single.
Adams, the third of four USM hurlers, took the loss.

Serfass, ECSU Warriors Shutout USM Huskies 10-0
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Junior RHP Joey Serfass (Newington, Conn.) hurled a
complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead the top-seeded Eastern Connecticut
State University Warriors to a 10-0 victory over the second-seeded University of
Southern Maine Huskies in the third day of play of the Little East Conference
Championship Tournament being played at ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield,
Conn.
The win moves the Warriors, 3-1 in the tournament, into Saturday
afternoon’s title game at 4:00 p.m. Southern Maine, the last unbeaten team in
the tournament, will need to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in
an elimination game at 12:00 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship
game against Eastern Connecticut. UMass Dartmouth staved off elimination Friday
by whitewashing defending champion Western Connecticut State University 6-0.
Serfass, who blanked the Huskies on six hits and three walks six days ago,
was even more impressive this time. He allowed only a lead off double in the
first inning to junior OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine), a sixth inning
single to junior OF Drew Palmer (Rothesay, New Brunswick) and a seventh inning
single to junior SS Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.). The 6-foot-3 right-hander
did not walk a hitter, hit one batter and struck out five to run his record to
7-0 on the season.
Eastern Connecticut jumped on USM sophomore right-handed starter Erik Kent
(Newburyport, Mass.) in the third inning for a pair of runs. Sophomore SS Tom
Koch (Warwick, R.I.) drove home the first run with a single, and junior OF
Eugene Julien (Brockton, Mass.) brought in the second run with a double.
Kent did not make it out of the fourth inning as the Warriors added two
more runs on an infield error and an RBI single by freshman 1B Greg Sullivan
(Needham, Mass.).
Julien added an RBI single in the fifth inning off junior reliever Jason
Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine). Sophomore DH Leon Galemba (Fairfield, Conn.) made
it 6-0 with an RBI double off junior RHP Ryan Johnston (Littleton, Mass.) who
came on for Thibodeau after Julien’s hit.
Eastern added four insurance runs (only one earned) in the ninth to turn
the game into a rout.
The Warriors pounded out 14 hits against Kent and four relievers. Julien
and Sullivan each had three hits apiece while four other Warriors had a pair of
hits. Julien also had three RBI.
Kent, who lasted 3.2 innings on the mound for USM, absorbed his first loss
of the season.

Huskies Hold Off Colonials in First Round of LEC Tourney
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior DH Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) drove home
a pair of runs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-2 win over
the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Wednesday afternoon in the
first round of the six-team, double-elimination Little East Conference Baseball
Championship Tournament being played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield,
Conn.
The win was the third straight, and seventh in the last eight games, for the
Huskies who improved to 27-14 overall. Southern Maine will play the winner of the
late game (7:00 p.m. start) between the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and
Keene State College Thursday night. Western Connecticut, now 16-22-1 overall,
will face Rhode Island College in an elimination game Thursday starting at 12:00
p.m.
Tedesco gave USM an early lead when he doubled to left-center field to score
junior SS Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) from first base in the second inning.
He added a second RBI in the fourth with a groundout that scored senior 1B Tyler
Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.). Delorme led off the inning with a single, advanced
to second on Marshall's sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch before
Tedesco brought him home.
Western Connecticut cut the margin in half in the sixth when freshman C Adam
Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.) led off with a double, move to third on sacrifice by
sophomore SS Chris Kaplan (Stratford, Conn.), and scored on a wild pitch.
USM responded in the bottom half of the inning with what proved to be the
winning run. With one out, senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) bunted his
way on. After Delorme fouled out, Lang stole second and came home on Marshall's
double down the left field line.
In the eighth, Chris Kaplan reached on an error and came home on a double by
senior OF Chris Sudano (New Fairfield, Conn.). That was all the Colonials would
get as USM senior RH reliever Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) stranded runners at
first and second by striking out the last two Colonial batters.
Sophomore RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.) picked up his seventh win of the
season for USM against one loss. Cahill was perfect into the fifth inning
retiring the first 14 Western Connecticut batters before surrendering a two-out
double to junior 2B Jon Lynch (Glastonbury, Conn.). Cahill worked 6.2 innings,
allowing four hits and no walks while fanning six before giving way to Adams.
Adams worked out of trouble in every inning to record his 10th save of the
season and tie the school single-season mark. It was his 16th career save,
breaking the career mark set of 15 set by Mike Welch (1991-93).
Senior LHP Carl Rivers (Morris, Conn.) went the distance for the Colonials,
allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out seven, to fall to 5-5.

Huskies, Warriors Split LEC Doubleheader
MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.) scattered four
hits and walked one while fanning seven as the University of Southern Maine
Huskies bested the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, 1-0, in the
first game of the teams' Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at
the ECSU Baseball Stadium.
In the second game, junior RHP Joey Serfass (Newington, Conn.) returned the
favor for Eastern Connecticut, limiting the Huskies to six singles and three walks
while striking out five for a 6-0 shutout.
The split gives the Warriors the LEC regular season title with a 13-1 record
and the right to host next week's six-team, double-elimination conference
championship tournament. Eastern Connecticut is 33-6 overall. Southern Maine,
which has a makeup doubleheader Sunday afternoon with the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth, is 24-14 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
In the opener, Cahill and senior RHP Adam Czerwinski (Somers, Conn.) hooked
up in one of the best pitchers duels of the season. The only run of the game came
in the third inning when USM junior OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) drove in
freshman 3B Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine), who had doubled, with a clutch two-
out single.
Cahill was masterful, not allowing a runner past second base. Serfass
reached Cahill for a two-out double in the seventh, and senior OF Dan Silva
(Berlin, Conn.) and sophomore SS Tom Koch (Warwick, R.I.) had back-to-back singles
in the eight, but Cahill left them stranded.
Czerwinski allowed only five hits and no walks, hit a batter and struck out
nine to fall to 5-3 on the season.
In the second game, the Warriors jumped on junior LHP Jason Thibodeau (Old
Town, Maine) and senior RHP Pat Liddy (Wilton, Maine) for four runs in the first
inning to stake Serfass to an early lead.
Eastern Connecticut loaded the bases against Thibodeau on a pair of walks and
a bunt single. Junior OF Dwight Wildman (Seymour, Conn.) greeted Liddy with a
two-run single. Silva brought home the third run with an RBI single, and junior
DH Adam Hevenor (North Kingstown, R.I.) drove in the fourth run with a fielder's
choice.
Liddy settled down to pitch effectively into the seventh before tiring.
Wildman picked up his third RBI of the game with a single the chased Liddy from
the game, and senior C Jeff Funaro (Milford, Conn.) brought the final run home
with a safety squeeze bunt.
Senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) had a pair of hits in the second
game for USM. Wildman, Koch and junior OF Eugene Julien (Brockton, Mass.) each
had two hits for the Warriors.

Marc Cahill Named LEC Pitcher of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Marc Cahill (Lynn,
Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named
Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 21-27 by the Little East Conference.
The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the conference office.
The right-handed hurler earned his weekly citation after hurling a

brother Rich played on the Huskies 1997 national championship team, raised his
season record to 5-1 with 2.93 ERA. He has worked a team-high 43.0 innings,
allowing 39 hits, 14 earned runs and nine walks while fanning 39.

Huskies, Anchormen Split
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.) scattered four
hits and one walk while striking out 10 in a complete game effort and junior OF
Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) had three hits and five RBI as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Rhode Island College Anchormen 8-2 in the
first game of the teams Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Anchormen came back to win the nightcap 7-1 behind the five-hit, complete
game pitching of sophomore LHP Matt Brannon (Cranston, R.I.) to salvage the split.
Brannon also aided his cause with a pair hits and two RBI.
The split leaves the Huskies with an overall mark of 20-12 and an 8-2 record
in the conference with one week left in the regular season. The Anchormen are now
15-15-1 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
In the first game, the Anchormen grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on
an RBI single by sophomore C Anthony Pacitto (Johnston, R.I.). USM came back with
three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Junior Pat
McDonough (Windham, Maine) tied the game with an RBI single, and Lemieux added a
two-out, two-run single to score McDonough and freshman 3B Tip Fairchild
(Monmouth, Maine) who had reached on a walk.
After the Anchormen closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI
double by junior DH Eric Gibree (Bristol, R.I.), Lemieux sparked a three-run
uprising in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double. Lemieux added an RBI
double in the seventh to cap off his 3 for 3 effort.
Cahill picked up his fifth win of the season against one loss. His 10
strikeouts are a season high. RIC starter, sophomore RHP Brian Baker (Newport,
R.I.), took the loss. Baker allowed only three hits over 4.2 innings, but hurt
his chances issuing nine walks.
In the second game, the Anchormen jump on USM junior LHP starter Jason
Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) for two runs in the first inning, and single runs in
the next three innings to build a 5-0 cushion for Brannon.
Sophomore OF Glenn Dusablon (North Smithfield, R.I.), who had three hits in
the second game, tripled in the first run and scored later on Brannon's RBI
single. A USM throwing error gave RIC an unearned run in the second, Gibree hit a
solo home run in the third, and rookie SS Ray De La Cruz (Pawtucket, R.I.) added
an RBI single in the fourth.
Southern Maine broke up Brannon's bid for his first shutout this season with
a run in the eighth on senior 1B Tyler Delorme's (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) RBI single.
Brannon picked up his fourth win of the season allowing five hits and three
walks while striking out one. Thibodeau, who pitched into the eighth inning
before being lifted, absorbed his fourth loss of the season against two wins.

The Beacons drew even in their half of the sixth on senior OF Jon Ingalls

as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Judges 3-1 in non-

Southern Maine improved its overall record to 18-11 on the season, and

USM's Tyler Delorme Named LEC Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Record-setting outfielder-first baseman Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team
has been named the Little East Conference Player of the Week for his standout play
the week of April 14-20. The announcement was made by the conference office
Monday afternoon.
Delorme is the second USM player to earn LEC Player of the Week honors this
season, following senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) who was the Player of
the Week last week (April 7-13). This is the second time in his four-year career
that Delorme has been named the Player of the Week.
In seven games last week, Delorme hit .469 (15 for 32) with seven runs
scored, 13 RBI, six doubles and one triple. He had five multiple-hit games and
for multiple-RBI games among the seven contests played.
In the process, he set USM career records for RBI and base hits. Against St.
Joseph's College (April 16), he broke the career RBI record of 177 set by Bob
Prince (1989-92) with a two-run single in the seventh inning. Four days later
(April 20), Delorme surpassed Pat Toomey's (1998-2001) mark of 255 hits when he
singled in the seventh inning. Delorme now has 185 RBI and 257 hits for his
career.
Presently riding an eight-game hitting streak, Delorme raised his season
average to .378 (42 for 111) with 20 runs scored, a team-leading 11 doubles, one
triple, one home run and 26 RBI.
Southern Maine, 17-11 overall and 6-1 in the Little East Conference, will
host Colby College on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) for a single game.

Huskies, Owls Split Doubleheader
Delorme Becomes USM All-time Hit Leader
KEENE, N.H. -- Senior 1B-LF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) had three
hits to become the University of Southern Maine's all-time hit leader and drove in
three runs to lead the Huskies to an 11-5 win over the Keene State College Owls in
the second game of their Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Owls took the first game after blowing a three-run lead in the top of the
ninth inning when sophomore 2B Mike Masseur (Warwick, R.I.) singled with one out
in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the winning run for a 9-8 victory.
The first game loss snapped Southern Maine's nine-game winning steak, and it
was the first time that Keene State has beaten the Huskies in 15 tries since
joining the Little East Conference in 1998. USM leads the all-time series 30-6.
With the split, Southern Maine is 17-11 overall and 6-1 in the Little East. Keene
State is 8-15 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
In the nightcap, the Huskies were clinging to a 2-1 lead thanks to junior DH-
3B Pat McCarthy's (Medford, Mass.) fifth inning solo home run when Delorme ignited
a five-run sixth inning with an RBI single that tied Pat Toomey's (1998-2001)
career mark of 255 base hits. An inning later, he broke the record with another
RBI single, and added an RBI double in the ninth.
After Delorme gave USM a 3-1 lead with his record-tying hit, he scored two
batters later on an infield error. McCarthy, who had four hits in the second game
including his first collegiate home run, drove in a run with a groundout. Rookie
3B Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) followed with an RBI double, and freshman OF
Josh Watkins (Keene, N.H.) added an RBI single. Fairchild scored the final run on
a fielder's choice.
Junior RHP Ryan Johnston (Littleton, Mass.), the first of three USM pitchers,
picked up his third win of the season going 6.1 innings. Sophomore Pat Austin
(Wallingford, Conn.) took the loss for Keene State despite allowing just three

Huskies Sweep Panthers to Extend Win Streak to Nine
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) had four hits,
including his first two home runs of the season, and drove in six runs to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a doubleheader sweep of the Plymouth State
College Panthers, 4-2 and 14-4, in Little East Conference action Saturday
afternoon at Towers Field.
The two wins extend the Huskies' current winning streak to nine games.
Southern Maine is 16-10 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The Panthers have now
dropped five straight to fall to 9-13 overall and 2-5 in the Little East.
In the opening game, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first on senior 2B
Scott Hodsdon's (Somersworth, N.H.) sacrifice fly that drove in sophomore OF Derek
Guimond (Lewiston, Maine).
The lead was short-lived as the Huskies plated three runs in the bottom of
the first. Lang tied the game with an RBI single. USM took the lead when an
infield error allowed the second run to score, and Lang came across the plate with
the third run on a passed ball.
The Panthers pulled within one on a sacrifice fly by junior C Mike Campo
(Londonderry, N.H.) in the fourth, but they could get no closer against USM
sophomore RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.).
Cahill (4-1) kept the Panthers at bay until tiring in the eighth. Senior RHP
Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) came on to close the door in the eighth, starting a 1-
2-3 double play that got the Huskies out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam.
Senior LHP Owen Burke (Sanbornton, N.H.) was the tough-luck loser, giving up
six hits and two walks while going the distance for the Panthers. He struck out
six.
In the nightcap, the Panthers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run
homer by Hodsdon and a solo home run by senior 1B Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) off
USM rookie LHP Sam Handy (South Burlington, Vt.).
Lang got one run back in the first with his first round tripper of the season
off PSC starter Jon Rich (Londonderry, N.H.). USM tied the game in the second on
junior OF Colin Loveless' (South Paris, Maine) two-run single, and took the lead
for good with a pair of unearned runs in the third.
USM put the game away with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Lang's
three-run blast and junior SS Brian Marshall's (Danvers, Mass.) RBI double.
The Huskies added five insurance runs in the seventh, ignited by senior DH
Paul Tedesco's (East Boston, Mass.) one-out solo homer.
Handy, 3-2 on the season, settled down after the shaky first inning to go the
distance, allowing 11 hits and one walk. He fanned one. Rich, the first of three
PSC pitchers, took the loss.

Southern Maine Downs St. Joseph's, 14-2
GORHAM, Maine - Senior Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) enjoyed a
record-setting day to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to their sixth
consecutive triumph with a 14-2 decision over the visiting St. Joseph's College
Monks on Wednesday afternoon at the Towers' Field.
Delorme collected three hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove

of 177 was held by Bob Prince, who's four-year career spanned the years 1988-92.
The Huskies will take an overall mark of 13-10 into Thursday's non-conference

to a halt, will travel to Western New England on Thursday.
Despite the one-sided final score, the Huskies twice rallied from a one-run
deficit early in the contest. The final time occurred in the third inning, when
the Monks pushed home a single run to grab a 2-1 lead in the top of the inning.
However, Southern Maine answered with three in the bottom of the frame to take the
lead for good. Delorme started the rally with a lead-off double, while senior Jon
Melanson (Portland, Maine) followed with an RBI double.
After adding a single run in the fifth to take a 5-2 advantage, Southern
Maine erupted for seven funs in the seventh inning. Brian Marshall (Danvers,
Mass.) stroked a lead-off triple, while Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine), Tip
Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine), and Delorme all added two-run doubles.

innings, fanning seven, while scattering six hits, and yielding but two walks and
runs to even his record at 2-2. Senior Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) came on in the

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior center fielder Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine)
slammed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to snap a 9-9 tie and the University
of Southern Maine went on to defeat the Bowdoin College Polar Bears, 12-10, in the
Huskies home opener at Towers Field Wednesday afternoon.
The non-conference win improved the Huskies overall record to 7-9. USM's

After the Polar Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth with three runs

field off loser Jason Hafler (West Newton, Mass.), the third of five Polar Bear
hurlers. USM added an insurance later in the inning to make it 12-9.
Bowdoin reached Liddy for a run in the sixth before senior RHP Ryan Adams
(Sanford, Maine) came on for USM to hurl three innings of scoreless, two-hit
baseball to pick up his second save of the season. Liddy picked up his first win
against two losses.
Bowdoin pounded out 14 hits against the three USM pitchers, led by junior DH
John Clifford (Wayland, Mass.) and sophomore 1B Tom McMahon (Weymouth, Mass.) who

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - The Bridgewater State College Bears erupted for 17

The second game was curtailed by darkness following the fifth inning.
Bridgewater State, which improved to 6-5, will return to action on Thursday when

Arrailol led off the second game with a single and came home to score the
eventual game-winning run on senior Chad Cambra's (Taunton, Mass.) single.
Bridgewater sent nine batters to the plate, registered five singles, and benefited
from five Southern Maine errors to grab a commanding 5-0 lead entering the bottom
half of the inning.
The Huskies did not have a single base runner until freshman Brent Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine) reached on an error to lead off the third. Southern Maine's
only hit came in the fourth, when Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) doubled to
the left-centerfield gap.
Each pitcher went the distance and Bridgewater State freshman Jordan Richards
(Amesbury, Mass.) earned the win, while Southern Maine freshman Sam Handy (South

Southern Maine Opens LEC Slate with Sweep of Western Connecticut
DANBURY, Conn. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies pounded out 26
hits and scored 25 runs to sweep the Western Connecticut State University
Colonials in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Westside
Field. The Huskies took the opening game by a score of 13-4 before coming back in
the nightcap to post a 12-5 victory in a game shortened to six innings by rain.
The two wins snapped a three-game losing skid for the Huskies who improved to
6-7 overall. Western Connecticut, the defending LEC champion, dropped to 5-10
overall. The games were the first in conference play for both teams.
Junior SS Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) paced the Huskies offense with six
hits and seven RBI in the two games. It was his grand slam home run that capped
off a six-run ninth inning to ice the first game victory.
In the opening game, the Huskies jumped on Western Conn. senior LHP Carl
Rivers (Morris, Conn.) for six runs in the first two innings to build a 6-0
advantage. Senior OF Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) did the damage in the
first inning with a two-run homer. In the second inning, junior OF Adam Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine) ignited a four-run outburst with an RBI single, and Tedesco
added a two-run single.
The Colonials chipped away at the lead to pull within three (7-4) after five
innings. USM sophomore RHP Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.) and senior RHP Ryan Adams
(Sanford, Maine) combined to hold the hosts in check the rest of the way. Cahill
picked up his second win of the season working eight innings. He allowed 10 hits,
four runs, and one walk while fanning five. Rivers, who struck out 10 in eight
innings, took the loss.
Before the rains came, Southern Maine continued its offensive assault on the
Colonials' pitching staff. The Huskies scored a run or more in each of the first
five innings. Marshall went 4 for 4 with three RBI in the second game.
Marshall drove in the first run of the game with a bases loaded single in the
first inning. Sophomore DH John Mullen (Portland, Maine) brought in the second
run with a bases loaded walk.
The Huskies added a single tally in the third on senior 3B Andy Lang's (New
Bedford, Mass.) RBI double. After the Colonials scored a single run, the Huskies
plated three runs in the third. Freshman 2B Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine)
brought in the first run with an RBI single, and Lemieux drove in two more with a
double.
USM put the game away with five runs in the fifth, highlighted by Marshall's
two-run single and RBI singles by Lemieux and Lang. All the runs came after two
outs.
Junior RHP Ryan Johnston (Littleton, Mass.) picked up his first win of the
season, working the first five innings. Junior RHP Lou Parise (North Haven,
Conn.), the first of three WC pitchers, took the loss.
Southern Maine is scheduled to play a single game at UMass Boston on Sunday.

Wheaton Stops Southern Maine 6-2
NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomore RHP Jon Jackson (Fairhaven, Mass.) limited the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to just four hits over eight innings to lead
the Wheaton College Lyons to a 6-2 win over the Huskies in a non-conference game
Friday afternoon at James Sidell Stadium.
The loss was the third straight for the Huskies who open their Little East
Conference schedule Saturday afternoon (12:00 p.m.) with a doubleheader at
defending champion Western Connecticut State University. Southern Maine is now
4-7 overall. Wheaton is unbeaten in its last four and improved to 7-3-1 overall.
The Lyons host Clark University for a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday (12:00
p.m.).
Southern Maine jumped on Jackson in the first inning for a pair of runs. The
Huskies loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk before senior OF Tyler
Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) drove in the first run with a fielder's choice.
Senior DH Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.) followed with an RBI single, but
Jackson escaped further damage by getting a groundout and a strikeout to end the
inning.
The Lyons got one run back in the second on an RBI single by freshman Rafael
Castillo (Queens, N.Y.).
Wheaton took the lead for good in the third, scoring four times against USM
rookie left-handed starter Sam Handy (South Burlington, Vt.). Sophomore Rob
Cipolla (South Windsor, Conn.) reached on a single, and came around to score on
junior Jesse Woods' (Reading, Mass.) RBI double. An infield error put runners at
first and third. Handy struck out the next hitter, but surrendered a two-out,
two-run double to senior Brett Edmunds (Wolfeboro, N.H.). After another infield
error put runners at the corners again, Handy committed a balk to allow the fourth
run of the inning to score.
After the shaky first inning, Jackson allowed only one hit over the next
seven innings, a fifth inning single to Delorme. Jackson walked three and struck
out eight.
Handy, the first of five USM hurlers, took the loss.

bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth allowing just one run, and out of a first-
and-third, no-out situation in the fifth without giving up a run.
Middlebury jumped on top in the second against USM starter Pat Liddy (Wilton,
Maine) when senior Jason Hanna (Southport, Conn.) hit a solo home run.
Southern Maine came back in the third to tie the game on an RBI single by
senior Paul Tedesco (East Boston, Mass.).
The Panthers took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when
freshman Ryan Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) hit a double that was misplayed in the
outfield allowing junior Abe Streep (South Nyack, N.Y.), who had walked, to score.
Armstrong later scored on Smith's sacrifice fly.
The teams traded single runs in the fourth before the Panthers put the game
away with three runs in the fifth. Smith had the big blow, a two-run homer, that
chased Liddy from the hill.
Liddy absorbed his second loss of the spring going four-plus innings,
allowing five hits, six runs (five earned) and four walks while striking out
three. Freshmen Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) and Ben Fournier

UW-Whitewater Comes From Behind to Beat USM, 11-10
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Junior 1B Brady Endl (Jefferson, Wis.) walked with the
bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning to force home the winning run as the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks came from behind to defeat the
University of Southern Maine Huskies, 11-10, in Fort Myers, Florida, Sunday
morning.
The loss was the third straight for the Huskies since they opened their
season with doubleheader sweep of St. Norbert's College. USM will try to regain
its winning ways Monday when its plays a doubleheader against Union College.
The Warhawks, who trailed 10-6 after five innings, pecked away at the
Huskies' lead with a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull
within one. In the ninth, an infield error would prove costly for the Huskies.
With two outs and two on, USM junior LHP Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine)
hit sophomore Dan Gnatzig (Whitewater, Wis.) to load the bases. Senior D.J.
Cartledge (Greenfield, Wis.), who had four hits on the day, singled to bring home
the tying run. Endl followed with a walk that forced in what proved to be the
winning run.
Southern Maine twice had leads in the game. After the Warhawks scored a
single run in the first off USM senior RHP Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine), the
Huskies came back to post a four-run inning. Senior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford,
Mass.) ignited the uprising with a two-run single. The third run scored on junior
3B Brian Marshall's (Danvers, Mass.) groundout, and the fourth came in on a wild
pitch.
The Warhawks tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by senior Travis
Van Zile (Reedsburg, Wis.), and took a 6-4 lead with two unearned runs in the
fifth. Freshman Josh Shere (Janesville, Wis.) plated the first run in the fifth
with an RBI single and the second scored on a wild pitch.
The Huskies exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth as they sent 11
men to the plate against junior starter Ryan Callahan (Janesville, Wis.) and
senior reliever Randy Borgardt (Racine, Wis.). Junior OF Brandon Brewer
(Cumberland, Maine) started the rally with a two-run single. With two outs, the
Huskies got another two-run single from junior C Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine) to
retake the lead, followed by RBI singles from junior SS Drew Palmer (Rothesay, New
Brunswick) and junior OF Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) to make it 10-6.
Borgardt would settle down after getting the final out of the inning to pitch
four scoreless innings and pick up the win. Thibodeau was tagged for the loss.
