   AMS 551 – Immunology Laboratory

This course consists of a series of comprehensive laboratories in which students learn basic immunoassays (e.g. enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay, immunofluorescence assay, immunoelectrophoreseis, immunoprecipitation and immunoblot assay) as well as techniques for the isolation, identification and functional analysis of immune cells and their products such as antibodies and cytokines. The roles of T cells, B cells, NK cells, macrophages and neutrophils in the immune response are examined through assays such as cell proliferation assay, cytotoxicity assay and flow cytometry. The techniques of monoclonal antibody production will also be introduced. Course emphasis will be on experimental design, and the clinical and research applications of the procedures used.

Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor is required.
