Welcome to our departmental website. The Department of Applied Medical
Sciences at the University of Southern Maine is a multidisciplinary graduate department in
biomedical sciences. We offer a variety of courses for graduate
students, advanced undergraduates, and special students.
Disciplines represented in the department include immunology, molecular biology,
genetics, toxicology, and epidemiology.
Our courses stress intellectual rigor, critical thinking, application of the scientific method,
proficiency in the latest laboratory methods, and the development of communication
skills. We prepare students for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, public health,
and other scientific areas. Our master's program serves as a firm foundation for
study at the doctoral level.
The Department has close collaborative relationships with the biotechnology industry, with
research organizations such as the Foundation for Blood Research and the Maine Medical Center
Research Institute, and with public agencies such as the Maine Center for Disease Control.
Applied Medical Sciences is one of the five academic departments of USM's School of Applied
Science, Engineering, and Technology.
