         Homework: ( Choose One)
Take a position: A high school junior taking a school class  on Web design attaches a picture of a Confederate flag to her site which details her family's role in the Civil War. A teacher notices the flag  and tells the student she cannot use the  image because it's "racist and  inflammatory." The teacher also says it violates school rules against "hate speech," adopted after violent incidents  at the school involving display of the flag. After the student refuses to remove the  image of the flag, the school orders the  Web page to be erased, and the principal later orders that the student be removed  from the course and receive no class credit for her work. The student's parents file suit, alleging    her First Amendment rights have been violated.

    Homework:

Media literacy is an informed, critical understanding of the mass media. It involves an examination of the techniques, technologies and institutions that  are involved in media production, the ability to critically analyze media messages, and a recognition of the roles that audiences play in making meaning from those messages (Shepherd). In reference to Barbie  products, why are they so popular?  What values are built into its advertising? What messages should children take in visiting the www site?  Do you teach media literacy? If so, how? If not, why not?
