Education, Support, and Advocacy for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning, Queer, and Allied community at USM.

The University of Southern Maine's Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity seeks to ensure a university environment that is positive, safe and supportive for individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This is done through a series of educational opportunities, support programs, and advocacy work on behalf of GLBTIQA students and employees. The Program works collaboratively with student groups, other University organizations and departments, and the greater community in these endeavors. The Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity also oversees the University Safe Zone Project.

The Gender Studies Student Organization -- next meeting:

Monday, October 19th from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.
at the Women and Gender Studies house


Open to all USM students interested in gender related issues, the Gender Studies Student Organization sponsors speakers and events on campus and in the community and participates in local and national gender studies conferences. The goal of the group is to participate actively in the Women and Gender Studies Program and to generate events, educate the campus on various issues in gender studies, women's studies, comparative gender studies, and gay/lesbian/bisexual studies.

Meetings are held at the Women & Gender Studies Program house at 94 Bedford St., Portland Campus while school is in session.

The Multicultural Center is dedicated to providing a supportive and diverse environment for the USM campus community. Through various programming, the Center explores critical issues on campus regarding race, class, ethnicity, nationality and culture. The Center is open to the entire campus community. However, the Center has a unique role with regard to the support of students from marginalized communities and cultures.

Established in 1991 the USM Women's Resource Center works to empower and transform women's Lives through a strong commitment to promote gender equity, provide leadership opportunities, honor diversity, address issues of campus safety, and build a community of support and connection. In collaboration with University and community organizations, the WRC works to offer services and educational programming that enrich the personal, professional, and academic experiences of women at USM and beyond. The WRC serves the Portland, Gorham and LAC campuses. The WRC is located on the Portland Campus in the Woodbury Campus Center, 780-4996
