Metacognition
Metacognition is--literally--thinking about thinking. It refers to the ability to consider not simply one's own thoughts, but also the socio-cultural influences on the architecture of thought. Critical analysis of one's own techniques, thoughtful review of one's own material, and intentional application of previously-used methods to new fields and projects all contribute to the development of the skill of metacognition.
