Women's Resource Center

Connecting and empowering women at USM and beyond...

Involvement & Leadership Opportunities

Involvement Opportunities

The Women's Resource Center is an exciting program that provides a variety of services and programs on the USM campuses. These services and programs couldn’t be provided without the critical assistance of a variety of women and men who work at the center. The WRC is managed by one full time Coordinator and diverse students and community members. Avenues for participation include work study, internships, volunteer, and service learning opportunities. You can develop leadership skills while making an important impact on your community. What better place to work where you will have the opportunity to develop your own talents and work with people who are energetic, fun, and committed to making positive change. The WRC offers a variety of different ways to participate in activities. Those who staff the Center are involved in such areas as providing important referrals and resources to people throughout Southern Maine, writing for the Strongbox Newsletter, running a parents support group, working on programs such as Taboo Topics, Take Back the Night, or the Body Beautiful Project and doing research on an important women’s issue. And these just name a few topic areas.

The WRC invites you to get involved, meet new friends, develop professional work skills and participate in work that is life changing and fulfilling.

Here is how you can get involved:

Work Study

The WRC offers two different types of work study positions, Office Manager and Program Coordinator. Within these two job descriptions students select various topic areas to be responsible for. Students can apply to work up to 20 hours a week depending on their work study allotment. Students selected to work at the center must attend trainings in the fall and spring along with a bi-weekly staff meeting.

To apply for either of these positions contact the Women’s Center Coordinator at 780-5139 to set up and interview. Must be eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program to apply. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information

Internships

The WRC participates in the USM Internship and Co-op program by offering students the opportunity to earn class credit by working at the Women’s Resource Center . Through our internship program, we offer opportunities for personal and professional growth, meeting and making new friends, learning about issues of importance to women, and making a positive contribution to our community. Students who are interested in an internship with the center must contact their academic advisor and the Women’s Resource Center Coordinator to discuss possible topic focus and interests.

Volunteering

The WRC volunteer program is a great way to contribute to an important cause while meeting other committed women and men and developing important work and leadership skills. Volunteers contribute between two to five hours per week when they either staff the Center or work on individual projects. Volunteers must go though one of the two trainings offered during the fall and spring semesters and attend bi-weekly meetings

The environment is dynamic and friendly, and volunteers receive excellent training in women's issues, cross-cultural communication, and crisis intervention.

Call the Women's Resource Center Coordinator at 780-4761. Ask about our volunteer opportunities or find out about this month's programs.

Service Learning

Many professors require students to participate in some type of service learning project or program. These are experiences that provide students with opportunities to work with community organizations and agencies. Examples may include a soup kitchen or youth alternative program. The WRC can provide programs and one time projects that fill the requirements of a service learning experience. To use the WRC for your service learning experience contact the WRC Coordinator and your professor for advisement on specific topic area.
