Personal Distractions at Work
Sooner or later, personal problems affect our ability on the job. You might be faced with a temporary disruption, such as car trouble or childcare issues, or a longer-term matter like divorce or an older parent’s disability.
What’s the best way to handle private matters at work? When is it necessary to discuss them with supervisors or coworkers?
First step: Identify and plan how to meet the needs of both you and your employer – make a list of questions that concern you:
- Is my work being affected by the problem? If so, to what degree?
- What can I propose to minimize any impact on my work? Focus on the workplace effects and be prepared to suggest specific actions.
- What is the workplace protocol for handling related issues? Does the issue warrant first contacting a supervisor or somebody in human resources or the company’s employee assistance program?
- Will the issue be treated with respect and confidentiality? Contacting your employee assistance provider will assure you that your problem will be discussed in total confidentiality. The provider can also advise you on how to approach your employer or human resources with your problem.
You may not be able to answer all of these questions but being aware of them will increase your confidence in communicating with those at work. In your discussions, be specific but brief – state the problem concisely and professionally.
The important thing is to reach an understanding. Show your willingness to offset any inconvenience, so your employer is more able to help you reach a workplace solution.
