Cleaner Options

Modern cleaning products available off the shelf often contain synthetic chemicals that can be toxic to humans, animals and the environment. They are particularly harsh for people with skin or lung sensitivities. And these chemicals generally degrade slowly after disposal.

We have cleaning options with less impact for people, pets and the planet. You can buy “green” cleaning supplies made with biodegradable sources – search natural cleaning products online to learn more.

Or you can try a self-made cleaner using basic household ingredients, such as vinegar, baking soda and borax. Here are some typical alternative compounds:

General Cleaner/Disinfectant
Dissolve 1/2 cup borax (a crystalline mineral) in 1 gallon of warm water. Store unused cleaner in a labeled bottle. Note: Before using this mixture, test a small area of the surface you want to clean.

Glass Cleaner
Mix a solution of 3 tbsp vinegar to 1 quart water. Wipe away surface dirt with a soft cloth before use. Store in a labeled spray bottle.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Sprinkle baking soda around the bowl and set for a few minutes; add vinegar and scrub. Vinegar is a mild acid that helps remove hard water scale.

Drain Cleaner
Dissolve 1/4 cup of baking soda in 1 cup of vinegar and a small amount of boiling water. Pour down the drain; wait a few minutes and flush with tap water.
