Web Development Tools Available to Campus Community

There are a number of tools available to help those who maintain their department's or office's Web site in adopting the USM online look and further enhancing their sites.

All Web sites were to have adopted the USM look on their Web sites by Feb. 14, 2003. If you maintain a page that is linked from any one of the pages listed below, you must conform to this new look.

Tools available to assist those who maintain Web pages include:

  • Web Publishing Policies that define two key types of Web pages at USM: official and unofficial/personal pages, and establish a procedure for determining "ownership" of all pages posted, as well as to inform Web site maintainers of their responsiblities. The policies also provide information to assist you in developing your site, outline the process for requesting space on the Web server and how to get access to upload your files. A new submit form makes the process easy to complete online!
  • A host of templates that give departments/offices options in tying into the new look; one template includes a look closely matching those of the audience portal pages, while another template consists simply of a standard header and footer for maximum flexibility. Please note: These templates cannot be modified in any way. They must be used as they were designed. The templates were tested with various Web site maintainers on campus and were designed to be used with most Web authoring software packages, such as FrontPage and Dreamweaver.
  • An Image Bank, which allows you to select images from several hundred pictures (jpegs) to plug into the templates, further enhancing and customizing departmental/office sites.
  • The USM Identity Guide and Style Manual that outlines how to use the USM logo and provides logos for Web use.
