Dr. Sanford is the Veteran Student Organization (VSO) Faculty Advisor.
Perhaps the main reason I became a professor was that I was able to go to college on the GI Bill. I have been at USM for 16 years, after working in government and in my own business.
As your advisor, I am committed to being an advocate for you in particular and for supporting the VSO and veterans in general. I think the most important thing the VSO can do is anything that helps your experience at USM. If that means you’d like a workshop on how to write a strong resume or cover letter, I can make that happen. If you want a liaison for different or better student services, I am your guy. If you want to talk about getting through the USM general education core I can help you navigate that and give you advice (for example, I recommend a minor rather than a cluster because it has more meaning for outside employers). If you want someone to talk about how to more effectively read a text or write a report, I can do that. If you want a couch to sit on and a place to eat your lunch in Gorham I can provide that in my department. Want help in selecting or getting through a major—just let me know. Anything else? Stop by, call or email.
