1) What does Upward Bound at USM mean to you?

Joseph Belanger, Sanford High School 2009

What Upward Bound at USM's summer program ment to me was it was a testing ground, even though I know that college will be slightly different it gave me an opertunity to experiment with different ways of living in a dorm setting.

Travis Chapman, Sanford High School 2007

Upward bound is about learning on higher levels. Learning that encompasses all aspects of life. Upward Bound is helpful motivation for those who need it and also for those who need just plain help. It is a place of triumph and satisfaction which one will begin to feel after they join and are pushed to perform better academically.

It is a place where you will learn about people; a place where people will learn about you.

Ashley Eyler, Bonny Eagle High School 2009

Helping people to succeed, Making all of us ONE, creating a new FAMILY and being treated the way you should be treated!!!!

Christopher Fraser, Portland High School 2007

Upward Bound is a great place for students to get to know about college and what they need in order to get into college. They helped me to see that I am college material!

Megan Morgan, Bonny Eagle High School 2011

Upward Bound at USM means a lot to me. The summer program is like a home away from home. It has helped me a lot with staying on top of my grades and retaining the material we learn over the school year.

Ryan Nichols, Sacopee Valley High School 2007

Upward Bound has helped me see that determination is very important for success. There are no words to describe how much this program has helped me prepare for college.

Kevin Stack, Bonny Eagle High School 2008

I am very proud to be accepted into the Upward Bound program and I do plan to use every opportunity I get. The school year program alone is helpful to students in ways to numerous to count.

Christina Tracy, Portland High School 2002

It's the chance for students to see that doorway open up for them.

2) What skill(s) has Upward Bound at USM helped you with?

Joseph Belanger, Sanford High School 2009

Upward Bound at USM has helped me with two skills, one was how to act more sociable and the other was my computer skills.

Ashley Eyler, Bonny Eagle High School 2009

Upward Bound at USM has helped me with my social skills, community skills and classroom skills.

Megan Morgan, Bonny Eagle High School 2011

Definitely time management. Also with my study skills.

Christina Tracy, Portland High School 2002

If it weren't for UB I wouldn't have gone to college - I had no idea how to go about looking up scholarships, any means to visit any schools, etc. They were able to help me with SAT prep, transportation to schools I wanted to see, and also were able to insure the courses I took in high school were what I needed in order to get accepted somewhere.

3) What advice would you give a new student joining Upward Bound at USM?

AnnMarie Austin-Hall, Sacopee Valley High School 2011

Some advice that I have for the new students coming to Upward Bound is:

  1. They should get their work in on time during the summer program and during the regular school year.
  2. Pay attention in class during the summer program because it can help them understand the work that the teachers during the school will give them and it will allow them to succeed in their classes a bit more.

Ashley Eyler, Bonny Eagle High School 2009

Take advantage of Upward Bound at USM's staff, they can really get you headed on the right path!

Megan Morgan, Bonny Eagle High School 2011

Don't be nervous. I really was the first day, but its really fun and helpful.

Christina Tracy, Portland High School 2002

Just to take advantage of all the program has to offer. It has changed some since I was a part of it, but there is nothing that can't be accomplished through UB if the student takes advantage of the support, resources and guidelines UB sets forth.

4) What are the advantages of being a part of Upward Bound at USM?

Tony Clark, Sanford High School 2008

Upward Bound offers you many unique opportunities and advantages. They help you choose a college. They help you with your school work. Upward Bound is great!

Ashley Eyler, Bonny Eagle High School 2009

You learn so many things, Maturing was a big one for me. Being able to express yourself and not worry about what others think because they are just so nice to everybody. Learning that its not always going to be fun but to get through it.

Megan Morgan, Bonny Eagle High School 2011

You don't have to worry about how your going to apply for college, because they help you with the process. Also you have help with your grades.

Christina Tracy, Portland High School 2002

What I liked about UB is the opportunity to meet new people from new schools while also insuring a better chance of a good future. I met a lot of great people, staff and students alike, just from being a part of UB.
