Career Exploration Opportunities
Upward Bound at USM would like to thank businesses and organizations for their support of our student interns in previous summers. Students find working in their potential career field to be extremely valuable in learning more about possible careers and the academic preparation needed to successfully enter the workforce after college.
This summer Upward Bound at USM is seeking work/internship placements for 71 students.
Are you interested in hosting an Upward Bound at USM student?
This summer there are two different career exploration options:
Senior Internship: (11 days for 34 students entering their senior year)
Students will be available to work every Tuesday and Thursday for six weeks starting June 23 through July 30 except for Thursday, July 23 when they will be visiting colleges.
Junior Work Experience: (6 days for 37 students entering their junior year)
Students will be available to work every Tuesday and Thursday starting July 14th through July 30th.
All students will typically arrive between 8:45 AM and 10:00 AM depending on the location of the work or internship site. Students are expected to work for five hours with half an hour off to relax and eat the bag lunch provided by Upward Bound. Students will be picked up between 2:15 PM and 3:00 PM.
Upward Bound at USM strives to match student career interests as closely as possible with work/internship opportunities on campus and in the community. Including the stipends paid to students and additional food, transportation and staff costs, the cost for Upward Bound at USM to provide a Senior Internship is $530 per student and the cost for a Junior Work Experience is $290. We welcome financial support in any amount from work experience and internship sites as this support helps to maintain our strong career exploration program and allows us to stretch our federal grant dollars a little further. However, if your organization is not able to financially contribute towards the cost of hosting a student, we will be glad to place a student with your business or organization and appreciate your willingness to share your time and expertise.
Please consider hosting an Upward Bound at USM student this summer. Also if you know of other organizations who may be interested in hosting a student, please let me know by filling out Upward Bound at USM's contact form.
Other Career Related Opportunities
Join us for Career Day on Friday, July 17th from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM on USM’s Portland campus for an opportunity to share your experiences with eager Upward Bound students. What are students saying about UB's Senior Internship Program?
 |
Sima Ouch, Biddeford High School 2009
A skill that I learned at my internship was organization. At my last internship with Greater Portland Council of Government, they were all so organized and this made things run smoothly.
One advantage of participating as an internship is that you are given a job of your interest. It really helps open your eyes to the right and wrong career for you. |
 |
Joseph Belanger, Sanford High School 2009
The internship program gives a chance for students to gain valuable experience in different job fields. Being in a job setting adds experience on how to act in a job setting. |
