Collaborators

The laboratory enjoys productive and exciting collaborations with many other laboratories. Our approach continues to be to attack scientific problems as a team effort with state-of-the-art research tools. Our collaborators are listed below by the major research areas that they most often contribute to, but many overlap other areas of our research as well.

Toxicology of Metals and Particulates

Dr. Susan Ceryak is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology, and a researcher in the Program in Molecular and Cellular Oncology at The George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Wise provides her chromium research with expertise in genotoxicity particularly concerning chromosome damage.

Dr. Douglas Currie is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Southern Maine. He and Dr. Wise are collaborating on a project considering the effects of arsenic exposure on neuronal development.

Dr. Lynne Elmore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology of the School of Medicine, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. She provides expert advice and guidance on creating telomerase-infected cells.

Dr. E. Janet Hager is the Manager of the Yale University Microarray Shared Resource. She provides expert advice and technical guidance on the use of cDNA expression arrays.

Dr. John Hinz is a research scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Labs. He provides expert advice in DNA repair mechanisms.

Dr. Shawn Holt is an Associate Professor at the Medical College of Virginia. He provides expert advice and guidance on creating telomerase-infected cells.

Dr. Maria Jasin is a Full Member, Molecular Biology Sloan-Kettering Institute and Professor, Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. She provides expert advice and counsel on the relationship of DNA double strand breaks and chromosome instability.

Dr. John Lechner is a Senior Research Scientist in The Innovation Center at The Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center. He provides expert advice and guidance on the immortalization and culture of human and marine mammal cells.

Dr. Vincent Markowski is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern Maine. He and Dr. Wise are collaborating on a project considering the effects of arsenic exposure during development on behavior.

Dr. Michael Mason is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Maine and a member of the Institute for Molecular Biophysics. He provides expertise in nanoparticle properties particularly single molecule and quantum dot chemistry and photophysics as well as in the design and application of new ultra-sensitive chemical imaging techniques, including both fluorescence and Raman spectroscopies.

Dr. Antonio Musio is a Researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Technologies, CNR, Segrate, Italy. Dr. Musio provides expert advice and guidance on the spindle assembly checkpoint and RNAi, antisense and gene expression.

Dr. Ah-Kau Ng is Professor of Immunology in the Department of Applied Medical Sciences at the University of Southern Maine. He and Dr. Wise are collaborating on a project considering the immunotoxicological effects of nanoparticles.

Dr. Gunter Oberdorster is Professor of Environmental Medicine at the University of Rochester College of Medicine. He provides expert advice and guidance in nanotoxicology.

Dr. Wilma Lingle is Assistant Professor of Pathology, Mayo Clinic Medical School. She provides expert advice and guidance on amplification of centrosomes.

Dr. Steven Patierno is Executive Director of the George Washington University Cancer Institute (GWCI) and Director of the Molecular and Cellular Oncology Program. Dr. Wise provides Dr. Patierno's chromium research with expertise in genotoxicity, particularly chromosome damage.

Dr. Stephen Pelsue is an Associate Professor of Applied Immunology at USM. He provides expert advice and guidance on flow cytometry. He and Dr. Wise are collaborating on a project considering the effects of arsenic exposure on the immune system.

Dr. Lisa Pfefferle is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Yale University. She provides expert advice and guidance on the creation and characterization of dusts and particles.

Dr. Olaf Stemmann is the leader of the Chromosome Segregation and Mitosis Research Group, in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Martinsried, Germany. He provides expert advice and guidance on chromosome segregation.

Dr. Larry Thompson is a research scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Labs. He provides expert advice in DNA repair mechanisms and cell lines deficient in DNA repair genes.

Dr. Douglas Thompson is a Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Director of the Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health at the University of Southern Maine. He provides expert advice and guidance on statistical analysis and study design and also assists with the marine mammal studies.

Dr. Ronald Walter is Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Director of the Xiphophorous Genetic Stock Center at Texas State University at San Marcos. He and Dr. Wise are collaborating on a project considering the effects of hypoxia and environmental metals contamination on fish.

Dr. Steve West is a Principal Scientist with Cancer Research UK (formerly Imperial Cancer Research Fund) and Honorary Professor, University College, London. He provides expert advice and guidance on the mechanisms of DNA double strand break repair.

Dr. Richard Winn is an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia. He provides expert advice and guidance on the care and use of Medaka.

Dr. Bo Xu is Principal Investigator and Leader of the Molecular Radiobiology Laboratory, Southern Research Institute, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He provides expert advice and guidance on cellular checkpoints and ectopic expression constructs and coimmunoprecipitation assays.

Dr. Hongyu Zhao is Ira V. Hiscock Associate Professor of Public Health and Genetics, Yale School of Medicine. He provides expert advice in the design, conduct and analysis in genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics, particularly with respect to microarrays.

Toxicology of Marine Animals

Dr. AbouEl-Makarim Aboueissa is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Southern Maine (USM). He provides statistical expertise particularly in the area of handling samples with measurements at or below detection limits.

Dr. Shannon Atkinson is the Research Director of the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska. She provides advice and guidance on Steller sea lions.

Mr. Iain Kerr is the Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of The Ocean Alliance. He provides access to the research vessel Odyssey and access to Southern Right whale samples.

Dr. Scott Kraus is Vice President of research at the New England Aquarium. He also operates the research field station in Lubec, Maine. He provides expert advice and guidance on North Atlantic right whales and access to samples. He is also collaborating with Dr. Wise on a project investigating the toxicity of metals to lobsters.

Dr. J. Lawrence Dunn is the Staff Veterinarian at the Mystic Aquarium. He provides expert advice and guidance in marine mammal pathobiology, endocrinology, parisitology and virology.

Dr. Tracy Romano is the Vice President of Research and Veterinary Services, Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration. She provides expert advice and guidance on the immune system in marine mammals.

Dr. Todd O'Hara is a researcher with the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. He provides expert advice and guidance on bowhead whales and helps with access to the field station in Barrow, Alaska.

Dr. Frances Gulland is the Director of Veterinary Service at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California. She provides expert advice and guidance on marine mammals and tissue from a variety of Western species.

Dr. Roger Payne is the Founder and President of The Ocean Alliance in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He provides expert advice and guidance on identification and geographic distribution of whales and other marine mammals.

Dr. Mariano Sironi is the scientific director of the Instituto de Conservacion de Ballenas (Whale Conservation Institute) in Patagonia, Argentina. He is part of the effort to study the Southern right whales.

Dr. Vicky Rowntree is Research Associate Professor of Biology, University of Utah, and co-founder of the Ocean Alliance. She provides expert advice and guidance on Southern right whales and access to samples.

Dr. Tania Zenteno-Savín, is the Investigador Titular A of CIBNOR – Programa de Planeación Ambiental y Conservación. She is collaborating with Dr. Wise on a project investigating the toxicity of metals to sea turtles.

Dr. Yawei Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University. She provides expert advice and guidance on the statistical analysis and epidemiological design of marine mammal studies.

Dr. Tongzhang Zheng is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and Head of the Environmental Health Sciences Division at Yale University. He provides expert advice and guidance on the statistical analysis and epidemiological design of marine mammal studies.
