The publisher of the popular Lonely Planet travel guides has named Northern Maine as one of its top ten U.S. destinations for 2013. According to the Lonely Planet website, "Maine isn’t only lobster rolls, lighthouses and rocky shoreline. The woodsy interior, on the top half of the Maine ‘thumb’ reaching north to the Canada border, makes for a wilderness adventure."
The story highlights the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State Park, Moosehead Lake, the Kennebec River, and biking and paddling trips in Aroostook County as among the highlights of Maine's northern region.
