About the Program in Tourism and Hospitality

The Tourism and Hospitality program at the Univeristy of Southern Maine is designed to develop a creative, innovative workforce that will sustain and grow Maine’s leading industry. 

The program currently offers a Bachelor of Arts in tourism and hospitality, featuring a broad array of courses, specialized concentrations in key skills areas and popular subjects, and faculty whose expertise touches on many aspects of tourism and hospitality. 

Both experienced students and those new to the field benefit from in-depth study in all aspects of the industry, from tourism planning and development to running a successful hospitality business, preparing graduates for a variety of career paths.

We welcome students who have an interest in tourism and travel, those currently employed in the hospitality industry, or those who are considering working in this growing field.

The publisher of the popular Lonely Planet travel guides has named Northern Maine as one of its top ten U.S. destinations for 2013. According to the Lonely Planet website, "Maine isn’t only lobster rolls, lighthouses and rocky shoreline. The woodsy interior, on the top half of the Maine ‘thumb’ reaching north to the Canada border, makes for a wilderness adventure."

According to a new study by the U.S. Travel Association, individuals who begin their careers with a job in the travel industry end up making more money and getting better educations than many of their peers. The report, entitled Fast Forward: Travel Creates Opportunities and Launches Careers, challenges the popular misperception that travel industry jobs are low-pay, or do not provide ample opportunities for career advancement.

USM Tourism & Hospitality program chair Kreg Ettenger spoke on September 19th at the board meeting of the Maine Tourism Association, a membership organization that represents the many facets of Maine's tourism industry. The board of MTA includes members from all sectors of Maine's tourism industry, including lodging, restaurant, transportation and attractions.
