Scholarships for MSW Students

Graduate Assistantship

  • Student works 10 hours/week and receives $4,500 stipend in addition to 12 credits tuition waiver for the academic year.
  • Must do work that adds to student's professional development.
  • Open for incoming new students and returning students.
  • Academic year appointment (no work during breaks).

Note: Indicate your interest in a GA position on your application to USM graduate studies (Question# 16). School of Social Work will contact you if a suitable position is available.

Lunder Scholarship

  • New or returning students may apply.
  • No work is required.
  • $2,500 stipend for each year for up to four years as scholarship.
  • Open only to Maine residents entering the MSW program.
  • Award is competitive and is based on personal need.

Note: Awards are distributed through the School of Social Work during the spring semester for the following academic year. Awards are made through the Office of Graduate Studies.

Graduate Aid (Federal Work Study) Program

  • Eligibility determined by the USM Financial Aid Office.
  • Student works 10 hours per week (usually).
  • $4,500 stipend (usually).
  • No tuition waiver available.
  • School of Social Work assigns work for the students, which is coordinated through the Office of Graduate Studies and the Financial Aide Office.

Note: If a student receives both a Graduate Assistantship and a Graduate Aide award, they must work separate hours for each one. For example, if the student has a 10 hour Graduate Assistantship and a 10 hour Graduate Aide award, they must work 20 hours to earn both stipends, for a total of $9,000.
