Social Work Student Organization (SWSO)
Faculty Advisor: David Wagner
This organization seeks to facilitate communication between all undergraduate and graduate Social Work students and faculty, ensure student involvement in departmental deliberations, provide for professional growth, and respond to issues and problems in the community. Student representatives may attend faculty meetings and serve as advisory members on the School of Social Work's peer and curriculum committees. Visit the Social Work Student Organization web site.
Eta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society
Faculty Advisor: Paul Johnson
Phi Alpha is a national Social Work Honor Society that is open to BSW students who meet the following criteria:
- overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
- overall Social Work GPA of 3.25 or higher
- have completed 9 or more credits in required undergraduate Social Work courses
The main goal of Phi Alpha is to provide peer mentoring and academic assistance to fellow BSW students. Students are honored at graduation with a listing in the graduation program and a Phi Alpha medal.

Lunder Scholarship Award
Congratulations to the following Social Work students who were awarded the Lunder Scholarship for the Academic Year 2007-2008:
- Margot Fine is a full-time MSW student at USM with a B.A. from Bates College. She is an activist and educator who has worked in sexual assault, motivational interviewing, anger management, crisis intervention, anti-racist community organizing, and community food security. She worked for over three years with homeless and street-involved youth at Preble Street Teen Center, where she collaborated to create Radical Acceptance, a quarterly visual and poetry magazine for marginalized youth.
- Kathy LaMore was born and raised in Lewiston and currently lives there. She is an Advanced Standing part-time MSW student with a BSW from USM. She currently works as a volunteer coordinator at the Greater Bath Elder Outreach Network, a division of Catholic Charities. Kathy had previously worked for five years as an Alzheimer Specialist at the Caregiver Companion Program, also at Catholic Charities. She has two children, including a daughter who is working on an MSW degree.
- Kate Leonard lives in Bridgton, Maine and has a ten-year-old daughter, Mackenzie. Kate graduated from USM in 1987 with a BA degree in Criminology and is now a first year MSW student in the four-year cohort program. She works at the Riverview Psychiatric Center as a continuity of care manager on the admissions unit.
2007 NASW Student Award
The NASW-Maine Chapter awarded the 2007 NASW Student Award to Jennifer Lynn Brown. Jennifer is a recent BSW graduate from the University of Southern Maine. The School of Social Work extends heartfelt congratulations to Jennifer.
